Chapter 9 - The Forged Amendment
Miriam brought copy to police.
The document was dated eleven days before Rachel died.
It purported to revoke 2023 amendment and restore 2019 remainder:
Sixty percent Brian.
Forty percent charity.
Rachel’s signature appeared.
Notarized by a man named Lucas Dent.
Problem.
Lucas Dent’s notary commission had expired two months before date shown.
Another.
Rachel was hospitalized that day.
Miriam had visited.
Rachel could barely hold pen and executed no estate documents.
Third.
The typography matched a template from Brian’s laptop.
When Brian submitted two weeks before Tyler’s disappearance, Miriam immediately said:
“I cannot accept this.”
He became angry.
“My wife signed.”
“Then provide original and notary journal.”
He had scan only.
Miriam notified corporate trustee fraud department.
She did not notify law enforcement yet because attempted submission could be misunderstanding until verified.
She told Brian:
“No trust distribution will ever rely on this without litigation.”
So Calvin’s voicemail was partly right.
Brian knew there was a problem.
But did he know final amendment cut him out?
Yes.
He had been told through rejected restoration.
Then why 8:11 funeral morning call?
He hoped death certificate and pressure would cause trustee to accept old version or litigate under fake amendment.
Miriam then explicitly told him no.
The plan was worse than first thought.
Not a man acting from outdated document.
A man trying to forge himself back into inheritance.
Then notary Lucas Dent.
Who?
Former employee of Rusk Memorial.
Died previous year.
So signature/notary seal likely copied.
Calvin had access to his old notary records through funeral office.
There.
Brian and Calvin forged amendment.
Digital forensics later showed source file created on Calvin’s office computer and emailed to Brian six weeks before Tyler disappeared.
Calvin:
Print on older paper.
Brian:
Can they test?
Calvin:
Stop watching crime shows.
Then:
Need Rachel signature.
Brian:
I have scans.
So Brian copied deceased wife’s signature to resurrect a financial clause that gave him money if son died.
The cruelty became almost unbearable.
Rachel’s death itself? Police reviewed due obvious concern.
No evidence foul play.
She died from documented cancer progression under hospice and hospital care.
Good.
No endless murder conspiracy.
Then motive timeline:
Brian’s business loan matured November.
He needed $1.2m.
In August he tried forged amendment.
Rejected.
September he and Calvin planned fake death.
October storm forecast.
October 6 Tyler taken.
October 8 funeral.
The scheme was not to kill Tyler immediately.
Messages suggested plan:
Keep Tyler hidden at remote cabin after funeral.
Push trust dispute using death certificate and forged amendment.
If money released or settlement, relocate.
What then?
Brian’s laptop note:
AFTER 60 DAYS:
Option A Canada.
Option B reveal kidnapping story after cash protected?
Option C Calvin handles.
That last line chilled everyone.
What did “handles” mean?
Brian claimed at interrogation later:
“Transport.”
Prosecutors could not prove intended murder.
Calvin on run could explain.
Then Tyler’s box.
Transport coffin was intended to move him from funeral home to remote hunting cabin owned by Calvin’s cousin.
Police searched cabin.
Empty.
Food.
Child size sleeping bag.
No weapons beyond normal hunting equipment secured? Maybe.
A passport style photo of Tyler.
An application draft for false identity:
Thomas Reed.
Birthdate altered.
This suggested Brian planned keep alive under new name at least initially.
Still kidnapping.
Still monstrous.
Then another file.
Passport application for Brian.
Destination Ontario.
Maybe he thought flee with Tyler after collecting funds.
So perhaps he did not plan death.
But he knowingly forced son to be “dead” to everyone he loved.
Then Miriam said:
“Rachel built trust to protect Tyler from financial misuse.”
I looked.
“And Brian turned Tyler himself into asset.”
“Yes.”
Then police traced Calvin’s fugitive phone to a truck stop in Tennessee.
Agents arrived minutes late.
They found disposable phone in trash.
On it, an unsent draft addressed to me:
You think Brian is worst. Ask why he agreed to funeral before he knew where I planned to take Tyler.
I read.
What did that mean?
Maybe Calvin claimed Brian expected something darker.
Or manipulation.
Detective Quinn warned:
“Fugitives create division.”
I knew.
Still, question stayed.
Brian had said:
“You don’t touch him.”
May you like
But he also buried empty casket and accepted that his son could never safely reappear while he pursued money.
What did he think happened after sixty days?
