Chapter 19 - The Second Funeral

There was no second funeral.
Tyler insisted on phrase.
“The fake funeral needs funeral.”
I asked therapist.
“What does he mean?”
Closure ritual perhaps.
We did not rebury empty casket.
After appeals/evidence retention, the casket was released for disposal.
Tyler did not want see.
We arranged funeral home not Rusk to dismantle and dispose respectfully.
No ceremony.
But Tyler wanted gather at church.
Not funeral.
“Alive day.”
Pastor James agreed.
Small.
No press.
School friends.
My parents? I’m grandma; maybe Ellie’s sister. Rachel’s sister Megan? We hadn't introduced. We can mention Rachel’s sister Laura attended.
Tyler walked into sanctuary alive.
Some adults cried uncontrollably.
He hated.
“Why everyone crying?”
Pastor:
“They’re happy.”
“Looks sad.”
True.
Then Tyler read nothing.
He sat front with me.
We did not retell crime.
Pastor said:
“Today is not about miracle story. It is about being grateful Tyler is here and giving him room to be child.”
Good.
Then lunch.
Pizza.
No lilies.
Tyler specifically banned lilies.
“Funeral smell.”
We used sunflowers.
Then his classmates gave new backpack.
He hesitated.
His old had been evidence and damaged.
The rocket keychain recovered from empty casket.
Police returned after trial.
Rachel’s gift.
Tyler held.
“Can I put on new bag?”
“Yes.”
He clipped.
Something reclaimed.
Then trust.
Court approved long term guardianship arrangement.
I became legal guardian, but corporate trustee remained financial.
Brian’s parental rights suspended/restricted during incarceration but not automatically terminated.
Tyler had right decide future contact with professional guidance.
I did not seek adoption.
He had father.
Even imprisoned.
Then surname.
“Can I change?”
Tyler asked at ten.
“From Porter?”
“Maybe Bennett.”
His mother.
I said:
“You can talk.”
We did not rush.
Names carry emotion.
He ultimately kept Porter Bennett? Maybe later.
For now no change.
Then Brian letters.
First:
Tyler, I am sorry.
Therapist gave choice.
He refused read.
Months.
Then asked.
He read one.
Brian did not explain.
Good.
“I made you afraid and took away days of your life.”
Then:
“I lied to everyone you loved.”
Then:
“Nothing about debt made that yours to carry.”
Tyler folded.
No response.
Then another birthday.
Astronomy book from prison commissary impossible. He mailed card via approved.
Tyler said:
“I don’t want.”
We kept unopened.
His choice.
Then Calvin.
No contact.
He sent restitution money from sale funeral home assets.
Trust? Some to government/county, some victim compensation.
I used none personally beyond costs.
Funeral expenses refunded by criminal restitution? Ironically, Brian had paid with his funds. My flowers etc. Not important.
Then Rusk Memorial closed.
County restructured coroner duties under medical examiner oversight.
Policies:
No owner of funeral home can personally transport case they certify without independent review? Local reform.
Pediatric deaths mandatory medical examiner referral.
Identity verification independent.
A child living through paperwork exposed institutional gap.
Good.
Then media documentary offers.
I refused.
Tyler at sixteen might decide.
Not mine.
Then my home.
The porch door repaired.
I eventually removed chair used barricade? It was dining chair. I kept using.
Tyler joked:
“Hero chair.”
I said:
“It’s chair.”
Good.
Then rainy night two years later.
Car slowed outside.
Tyler froze.
I checked camera.
Pizza delivery.
He laughed nervously.
“Okay.”
Progress.
Then he ate three slices.
No grand.
Then one afternoon, he found funeral program photo in drawer.
The piece he saved.
His own smiling face.
He stared.
“Do you think that kid knew?”
“What?”
“What was going happen.”
“No.”
“Is he me?”
“Yes.”
“I feel older.”
“You are.”
He was twelve.
Four years since.
Then:
“Can we throw?”
“Your choice.”
He did.
This time entire photograph.
No need keep.
Then he asked:
“Can we visit Dad?”
I almost dropped mug.
“You want?”
“Maybe.”
Not forgiveness.
Curiosity.
Brian had been in federal/state facility several hours away.
Therapist prepared.
The first meeting would be through glass? Depending prison. Could be supervised visitation.
Tyler wanted know if father looked same.
I wanted protect.
May you like
But choice.
We scheduled.
