Chapter 10 - My Son’s Explanation

Brian requested to speak with me through attorney.

I refused first.

Then Tyler asked:

“Does Dad know I’m okay?”

“Yes.”

“Has he asked?”

“Yes.”

“Do you talk?”

“No.”

“Why?”

I could not explain without making child responsible.

“Because I’m angry.”

Tyler:

“Will you ever?”

“Maybe.”

Then:

“Can you ask why?”

That changed.

I agreed to one attorney supervised jail video call without Tyler.

Brian appeared.

No raincoat.

Orange jail clothing.

My son looked exhausted.

“Mom.”

I said nothing.

Then he cried.

“Is Tyler okay?”

“Yes.”

“Does he hate me?”

“I’m not discussing his private feelings.”

He closed eyes.

“Fair.”

Then:

“Why?”

I asked.

No preamble.

He inhaled.

“I was drowning.”

“Don’t use word.”

He flinched.

Right.

“I had debt.”

“I know.”

“I was going to lose everything.”

“So you erased your son?”

“I never planned to hurt him.”

“You drugged.”

“Calvin handled dose.”

“You gave drink.”

“Yes.”

“You locked him away.”

“Calvin.”

“You brought him.”

“Yes.”

“You told me dead.”

Brian cried.

“I thought I could fix it.”

“How?”

He explained.

The fake death would trigger trust dispute.

He believed forged amendment could force settlement.

Even if Miriam challenged, corporate trustee might settle rather than litigate public.

He expected maybe two to three million.

Calvin promised.

“Then what about Tyler?”

“I was going to take him.”

“Where?”

“Canada eventually.”

“So everybody believes he’s dead forever?”

“For a while.”

“A while?”

He shook.

“I know.”

“No, tell me.”

“I thought after money moved, we could say he had been kidnapped and recovered.”

“Then trust gets money back.”

“I thought I could protect enough.”

I stared.

He had not thought beyond desperation.

Then:

“Option C Calvin handles.”

His face changed.

“You saw that?”

“Yes.”

“That meant papers.”

“What papers?”

“Identity.”

“Not killing?”

“No!”

He leaned toward camera.

“Mom, I swear.”

I believed he may not have intended murder.

It did not rescue.

Then:

“Why coffin?”

“I did not agree.”

“You were there.”

“I thought transport crate.”

“It was a coffin.”

“Calvin used what he had.”

“Tyler screamed.”

Brian covered face.

“I know.”

“You left.”

“I had funeral.”

The absurdity hung.

“You had funeral.”

“My whole plan depended everyone seeing me there.”

“Exactly.”

Then:

“You buried empty coffin while son begged from another one.”

He sobbed.

I waited.

Then asked:

“Did you know Calvin planned take him after?”

“To cabin.”

“Did you know locked?”

“I knew secured.”

“He was eight.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

He nodded.

Then forged amendment.

Brian admitted.

He had Rachel signature scans from mortgage documents.

Calvin prepared.

Why target trust rather than bankruptcy?

“Shame.”

That answer surprised.

“My name was everywhere.”

Porter Development.

Investors friends.

He could have filed bankruptcy, sold house, started over.

He believed failure unbearable.

Then:

“I told myself trust was family money.”

“It was Tyler’s.”

“I know now.”

“You knew then.”

He looked away.

Yes.

Then Rachel.

“She changed it because she didn’t trust me.”

“Yes.”

“I felt betrayed.”

“She was protecting child.”

He cried.

Then asked:

“Mom, did she leave anything about me?”

I thought of video.

Not for him.

“No.”

That was maybe lie? She mentioned. I decided privacy.

Then:

“Why did you come to my house?”

“Calvin called Tyler gone.”

“Why not police?”

He laughed bitterly.

“What would I say?”

Then:

“I thought he’d go to you.”

“Why?”

“You were home.”

“And he trusts me.”

Brian looked.

“Yes.”

Then:

“Did you mean kill Tyler and me?”

“What?”

“The recording.”

His face changed.

“No.”

“I said I’d kill us both.”

“Who is us?”

“Me and Calvin. It’s expression. Ruin us. I don’t even know why I said kill.”

Tyler heard.

Brian cried.

“I never threatened Tyler or you.”

Then:

“Calvin entered my house.”

“I didn’t tell.”

“Did you give him key?”

Long silence.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Earlier. To search if Tyler got there before me.”

There.

He enabled.

Then Brian lowered head.

“I am sorry.”

I said:

“I love you.”

He looked up, shocked.

“And I will testify truthfully if asked.”

His face collapsed.

“I know.”

Then:

“I choose Tyler.”

Rachel’s line.

Brian stared.

“I know.”

The call ended.

An hour later Detective Quinn called.

Calvin had been arrested in Kentucky after trying to buy bus ticket with false identification.

He carried cash.

A storage key.

And one document.

A handwritten letter addressed:

ELLIE PORTER

May you like

OPEN BEFORE BRIAN’S TRIAL.

Calvin wanted his version heard too.
