Chapter 23 - My Eightieth Birthday

At eighty, family dinner.
I insisted on red wine.
Everyone watched glass.
I noticed.
“Stop.”
They laughed.
Vanessa attended.
First full family dinner with me since slap.
Eight years.
Claire planned.
Daniel nervous.
Vanessa sat across.
I wore pale-blue cardigan deliberately? Could echo.
At dessert, I lifted wine.
“Everyone relax.”
Then I intentionally placed it far from edge.
Laughter.
Vanessa looked down.
I said:
“Vanessa.”
She looked.
“I invited you.”
“I know.”
“You don’t need to look guilty every time I touch glass.”
She cried.
“I’m working on it.”
Good.
No reenactment.
No one spilled.
Then Claire accidentally knocked water.
Entire table froze.
Then erupted laughing.
Claire:
“Oh my God.”
