Chapter 17 - Claire Comes Home

Claire graduated college at twenty-two.
Vanessa out by then? let's say sentence completed and on supervised release, living separately, no direct contact unless consent.
Claire agreed to meet her mother in therapy.
First in years.
I did not attend.
Later Claire told me.
Vanessa looked older.
She said:
“I’m sorry I used you.”
Claire:
“You used Grandma more.”
Vanessa:
“Yes.”
Claire:
“You made me think I was responsible for monitoring her.”
Vanessa:
“Yes.”
Claire:
“You told me Dad was weak.”
Vanessa cried.
“Yes.”
Claire:
“Do you still think that?”
“No.”
“Do you think Grandma manipulated me?”
“No.”
“Do you think she should’ve lived alone?”
Vanessa hesitated.
“I think she should have been asked what she wanted.”
Good answer.
Claire asked:
“Can we have relationship?”
Vanessa said:
“I hope so.”
Claire:
“Slow.”
Vanessa:
“Yes.”
They began coffee monthly.
No secret.
Claire told Daniel, me.
Transparency not because permission.
Because secrecy old wound.
I supported.
I felt jealous.
Unexpected.
Vanessa got daughter back while I still carried marks emotionally.
Therapist asked:
“Do you want Claire to punish Vanessa on your behalf?”
No.
But part of me did.
I admitted.
Then let go.
