Chapter 8 - My Mother’s Hand

I did not recover a hidden memory.
I recovered documents.
That was safer.
The age nine shoulder injury produced the clearest record.
Paramedic run sheet.
The fall happened at home.
No treehouse.
No playground.
They arrived because a neighbor heard screaming and called.
Amanda told ambulance crew:
“Monica fell down three steps.”
At hospital, I said:
“Mom pushed me because I broke a plate.”
Then Amanda entered.
I cried.
Changed story.
Denise Carter documented it.
Leonard Vale canceled social-work follow-up.
The neighbor was still alive.
Margaret Sloan.
Eighty three.
Police found her.
She remembered.
“I saw Amanda drag Monica by the arm.”
From window.
Then:
“I heard a crash.”
Did she see push?
“No.”
Did she hear Amanda say anything?
“Yes.”
“What?”
“You cost me more than you’re worth.”
My stomach turned.
Money again.
Margaret Sloan had told police at the time?
She called hospital later.
Said she was worried.
No follow-up.
Record lost.
Then age seven ribs.
No clear perpetrator.
Could have been fall.
Could have been punishment.
No need to invent certainty.
Age eleven wrist.
Bicycle story.
A childhood friend remembered Austin knocking me off bike during argument.
Could have caused.
She never knew wrist broke.
Age thirteen knee.
Record directly named Austin.
Now fresh knee.
Same brother.
Different age.
Then Detective Hill said:
“We can probably establish a pattern of family violence and concealment. Proving each childhood injury was intentionally caused for insurance is a separate question.”
Good.
“What can you prove?”
“That Amanda knowingly made false statements about at least two incidents.”
“And insurance?”
“Potential fraud depends on materiality and limitations periods. Much of it is old.”
So some crimes may be too old to charge.
That did not make them unreal.
Then Leonard Vale’s current payments.
Those were recent.
WRS paid him $310,000.
For consulting.
What did he do?
Help Austin win Pacific Crest contract.
He introduced him to his son Leonard Jr.
He coached vendor proposal.
Did he disclose family relationship to me?
No.
Did he tell Jr. that Austin was connected to a hospital auditor?
No.
Then Leonard Jr.
He claimed ignorance.
Records supported partial.
He knew Austin’s mother from childhood.
He did not know I was Monica Wellman because my professional name was Monica Reed?
Wait current name Wellman in prompt. We can keep Monica Wellman. He should know. Could say he knew we were siblings but accepted Austin's claim we were estranged and Monica had no audit role. Still conflict. Let's do.
He approved vendor despite relationship.
Violation.
He received no payments.
Hospital disciplined him but investigators found no fraud share.
He resigned later.
Not everyone needed criminal.
Then Amanda’s current consulting.
Why WRS paid her so much?
She recruited hospitals using Vale connections.
Some real work.
But also served as Austin’s fixer.
Settlement negotiations.
Loan guarantees.
Document signatures.
Then my trust termination.
Signature expert.
My name forged.
Who signed?
Handwriting closer to Amanda than Austin.
Not definitive.
But bank appointment record showed Amanda and Austin present.
Security still image recovered from backup microfiche? Maybe banks sometimes store ID images. Let's say scanned teller ID log.
Amanda’s driver’s license.
Austin’s.
No Monica.
Yet file states beneficiary appeared in person.
Bank failed identity controls.
Bank’s successor institution now faced civil liability.
This was not just family theft.
Institution failed.
Then trust documents finally found in offsite archive.
My father’s letter.
Still there?
No.
File noted:
PERSONAL LETTER RELEASED TO BENEFICIARY UPON TERMINATION.
Missing.
Amanda had it.
Search warrant of her home could find.
Police executed after financial probable cause.
In locked drawer:
Frank’s letter.
Unopened?
No.
Opened.
Folded.
Twenty three years late.
Addressed:
May you like
MONICA.
I was not ready.
