Chapter 11 - Amanda’s Version

Amanda eventually agreed to an interview.

Her lawyer insisted.

She did not confess everything.

She explained.

That was her favorite weapon.

My childhood:

“You were accident prone.”

Austin:

“High spirited.”

Frank:

“Overprotective.”

Insurance:

“Responsible planning.”

The payouts:

“We had bills.”

I was not convinced.

Then age nine.

“Did you push Monica?”

Amanda’s jaw tightened.

“She was screaming.”

“That is not the question.”

“I moved her.”

“Did she fall?”

“Yes.”

“Did her shoulder dislocate?”

“Yes.”

“So you pushed her.”

“I did not intend that injury.”

There.

Then why tell hospital she fell from steps?

“Because I panicked.”

Why pressure Monica to retract?

“I didn’t want Child Services taking my children.”

Why did Leonard Vale cancel referral?

“He believed me.”

Because he was paid?

Amanda became angry.

“I never paid Leonard to bury abuse.”

Records showed referral fees through policy broker, but no direct bribe.

Important.

Maybe he helped because relationship and financial ecosystem, not explicit payment.

Then age thirteen.

“Did Austin push her?”

“Yes.”

My breath caught when Laura relayed later.

She finally admitted.

“Why lie?”

“Because he was seventeen.”

“So?”

“He could have been charged.”

“He broke her knee.”

“He was a child too.”

Seventeen.

Then insurance claim.

“Did you collect money?”

“Yes.”

“Did you think the assault should be reported?”

She stared.

“I thought preserving Austin’s future was more important.”

There.

The hierarchy.

Then investigator asked:

“More important than Monica’s safety?”

Silence.

Amanda’s lawyer tried to stop.

She answered anyway.

“At the time, yes.”

I read that transcript three times.

No daughter should see that sentence.

Maybe I needed it.

Then the policies.

Did Amanda ever intentionally injure Monica to collect?

“No.”

Did she ever provoke Austin because an injury would pay?

“No.”

Evidence did not prove otherwise.

Good.

No exaggerated monster.

She did something still horrific:

Once injuries occurred, she viewed payouts as benefit and concealed violence to preserve money and Austin.

Then age seven ribs?

She claimed genuine playground fall.

No contradicting witness.

Age eleven wrist?

She admitted Austin knocked me off bicycle during argument but called it “kids fighting.”

Again concealed.

So at least three childhood injuries tied to family violence.

Then Frank’s trust.

She hated it.

“Frank made Monica rich for being difficult.”

$742,000 was not rich.

But Amanda believed money rewarded weakness.

After Frank died, she could not access trust directly.

She waited until I was twenty four.

How did she convince bank?

Forged signature.

Fake ID copy.

A bank employee, Gerald Mason, bypassed in-person verification because Amanda had been longtime customer.

He was dead now.

Bank institution admitted process failure.

Then why use money for Austin?

“He needed one chance.”

Of course.

Why not tell me?

“You would have said no.”

Exactly.

Then WRS profits.

Amanda believed she deserved consulting fees because she helped build company.

Maybe she did help.

With stolen capital.

Then my birthday.

Why applaud?

Her face finally changed.

No explanation polished enough.

“I was furious.”

“At me?”

“You destroyed Naomi.”

“No. Austin did.”

“She was his chance.”

“Chance at what?”

“Getting out.”

Out of debt.

Out of WRS problems.

Out of Kathleen’s loans.

Out of everything.

Naomi’s family money was supposed to rescue him.

I exposed marriage.

That rescue vanished.

So Amanda watched Austin swing metal into my knee and thought:

Finally someone is punishing the person who ruined him.

That was the ugliest secret.

Not an underground cabal.

May you like

Not a hidden killer.

My mother believed my brother’s future mattered more than my body.
