Chapter 12 - Thomas Vale

Police did not let me go.
Good.
They located Thomas Vale through motor vehicle records.
Virginia.
Small town near Chesapeake.
Licensed private marine surveyor.
No criminal history under that identity.
Fingerprint existed from professional licensing.
Matched one partial at Pier Twelve.
Could be my father.
Age fit.
Photograph arrived.
I knew him.
Not from memory exactly.
From my own face.
Same eyes.
Same crooked left eyebrow.
Older.
Gray beard.
Alive.
My father was alive.
Or a man who looked like him and used his alias.
DNA would resolve later.
For now, police went to his address.
Empty.
No forced entry.
Coffee still in sink.
Car gone.
Neighbor said he left two nights earlier after receiving a visitor.
Who?
Older man in expensive sedan.
Photo lineup later:
Charles Morrow.
Of course.
Charles admitted meeting Thomas.
“When?”
Day before Samuel died.
“Why?”
“Thomas called me.”
“What did he want?”
“To stop Kessler from reopening Harbor.”
“Why?”
“He believed Maya would be hurt.”
I almost laughed.
Every lie in my childhood had apparently been protection.
“Did you tell him Kessler already contacted Julian?”
“Yes.”
“What did Thomas do?”
“He panicked.”
“Did he kill Kessler?”
“I do not know.”
Fingerprint at pier.
Thomas was there.
Then security camera from Pier Twelve.
Samuel arrived 8:41 p.m.
Julian 9:03.
But earlier:
Thomas Vale entered 7:54.
Left 8:22.
Before Samuel arrived.
His fingerprint could predate murder.
Good.
Then another man entered at 9:18 after Julian left.
Face covered.
Samuel was found dead at 9:31.
Thomas not necessarily killer.
Then my father called me.
Unknown number.
I answered because police were recording.
“Maya.”
I forgot every prepared sentence.
“Are you alive?”
Stupid.
“Yes.”
“You let me bury you.”
Silence.
“Yes.”
“You let Mom raise me alone.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Dominic knew where you slept.”
Dominic dead now.
“Then why not come back later?”
“I did.”
“What?”
“I watched you.”
My stomach turned.
“From where?”
“School once. Hospital when Evelyn died. Your graduation.”
I stood.
“You were at Mom’s funeral?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“She would not let me.”
My mother knew he was alive until she died.
Another betrayal.
Then:
“She said if I came near you without turning myself in for the false closures, she would tell you herself.”
“Why didn’t she?”
“She wanted you older.”
“She died.”
“Yes.”
“You still didn’t come.”
“No.”
“Because?”
“Cowardice.”
At least he named it.
Then I asked:
“Were you at Pier Twelve?”
“Yes.”
“Did you kill Samuel Kessler?”
“No.”
“Why were you there?”
“To leave him something.”
“What?”
“Proof Charles Morrow did not order the Harbor transfer.”
That surprised me.
“Who did?”
“Dominic.”
“We know Dominic.”
“No.”
“What?”
“Dominic did not act alone.”
“Who?”
My father stopped.
Then:
“Vittorio.”
Julian’s father.
Again.
“What did Vittorio do?”
“He authorized moving the reserve.”
“Julian says Vittorio tried to restore it.”
“Both are true.”
Of course.
Vittorio initially supported restructuring.
Later learned beneficiary rights were stripped and closures forged.
Tried to fix.
Moral layers.
Then:
“Why does that matter now?”
“Because whoever killed Samuel is not protecting Dominic.”
“Who are they protecting?”
“The person who inherited the Civic Fund.”
I looked at Lena.
“Who inherited it?”
Thomas answered:
“Not a DeLuca.”
Then the line disconnected.
Police traced.
Prepaid phone moving along highway.
No immediate location.
Then Julian’s financial team identified current North Harbor Civic Fund control.
After restructurings, mergers, charitable conversions:
North Harbor Community Trust.
Chairman:
Charles Morrow.
But he was already obvious.
Then successor trustee named:
ELIAS MORROW.
Owner of Marrow Protective.
His son.
So Morrow family controlled the modern fund.
Still.
Maybe.
Then my father called again thirty minutes later.
One sentence.
“Do not let them reduce this to Charles.”
Then disconnected.
He wanted something else.
Who inherited actual economic rights?
Trust records showed a beneficiary council.
One corporate member:
DELUCA COMMUNITY FOUNDATION.
Julian’s foundation.
He stared.
“I had no idea.”
His organization currently received annual grants from the descendant of Harbor fund.
How much?
$900,000 over five years.
For youth programs.
Legitimate services.
But money originated partly from a reserve tied to unpaid families.
Julian had indirectly benefited.
Again.
No clean hands.
Then another member:
MORROW JUSTICE INITIATIVE.
Another:
GRAYPORT CHILDREN’S HEALTH.
Real charity.
The stolen or misallocated money had been blended into public good.
Recovering it could harm current programs.
Still families had rights.
Complex.
Then Lena said:
“Good causes do not cure bad title.”
Exactly.
Then police found Samuel’s autopsy detail.
Gunshot killed him.
Weapon type common.
No link.
But his phone had one deleted outgoing call at 9:17.
To Thomas Vale.
Duration:
Twenty two seconds.
Thomas was not at pier then.
What did Samuel say?
No recording.
Then Thomas texted:
DON’T TRUST THE BOY.
Which boy?
Julian?
Elias Morrow?
Someone else?
Samuel replied:
May you like
TOO LATE.
Continue to the next part: Maya’s father insists the current danger is larger than Charles Morrow, while Samuel Kessler’s final message warns Thomas that he already trusted “the boy” too late.
