Chapter 11 - The Coffee Pot From My Mother’s Kitchen

Rosie thought I was joking.
“You want the ugly copper pot?”
“Yes.”
“It leaks.”
“I don’t need coffee.”
“That is the first normal thing you’ve said.”
The pot had sat above the kitchen pass for years.
Decoration.
Grease stained.
Dented.
I had looked at it thousands of times.
Never recognized it.
Why?
Because my mother’s had been brighter.
Clean.
I was eight when I last paid attention.
Rosie climbed a ladder before Nolan could.
“Do not break your neck over mafia treasure.”
Nolan looked at me.
“She knows?”
“Everyone at Rosie’s knows everything within forty minutes.”
True.
We took the pot to Lena’s office.
No smashing.
A restoration technician inspected.
The wooden handle contained a cavity.
Inside:
A sealed microfilm capsule.
Still intact.
We digitized through a professional lab with police observers because Samuel’s murder made everything evidence now.
Images.
Beneficiary forms.
Death certificates.
Payment receipts.
Corrections.
Four names marked:
STATUS DISPUTED.
Thomas Sullivan.
Leonard Hayes.
Maria Dorsey.
Samuel Ortiz.
All listed dead within eighteen months after Harbor Nine.
Were all alive?
Documents suggested yes for periods afterward.
Why false deaths?
Different reasons.
Leonard Hayes had entered witness protection after testifying in a union corruption case.
His death record was intentional protective identity.
Maria Dorsey had a clerical duplicate after another woman with same name died.
Corrected later.
Samuel Ortiz’s family moved to Puerto Rico and records confused father and son.
Only Thomas remained truly suspicious.
That mattered.
The “four dead people” was not one grand scheme.
Three had explanations.
Thomas did not.
Then microfilm showed something else.
Reserve closure forms.
Three false Thomas verifications.
Signed under alias Thomas S. Vale.
My father knowingly closed other families.
Names:
Reed.
Harris.
Collins.
Nolan’s family.
Nolan stared.
“My brother.”
Thomas had signed the Reed closure.
My father had helped mark Nolan’s mother paid when she was not.
I felt sick.
“I’m sorry.”
Nolan’s face was unreadable.
“You didn’t do it.”
“My father did.”
“Yes.”
He walked out.
Julian followed.
I stayed.
Then Lena found Thomas’s handwritten note on one frame.
CHARLES DOES NOT KNOW THESE ARE FALSE.
DOMINIC HAS MAYA ADDRESS.
I SIGN THREE, THEN I LEAVE.
My father claimed coercion.
Could be self serving.
But he documented.
Then:
EVELYN WILL HATE ME.
Correct.
My mother apparently later discovered.
Another frame:
EVELYN TO THOMAS
YOU DO NOT PROTECT A CHILD BY MAKING ANOTHER FAMILY PAY FOR HER SAFETY.
I closed my eyes.
My mother confronted him.
Then:
TURN YOURSELF IN.
Thomas response:
NOT YET.
So my father chose delay.
Same pattern as everyone in these stories.
Then current money trail.
Reed reserve went into annuity later under Gabriel.
Why?
After discovering false closure, someone tried to restore it eight years ago.
Who initiated restoration?
Vittorio DeLuca estate office.
But Vittorio had been dead four years.
Executor:
Julian.
Signature:
Julian DeLuca.
He stared when shown.
“I remember this.”
“What?”
“Gabriel brought me a list of claims my father wanted corrected.”
“You signed restoration.”
“Yes.”
“You helped Nolan’s mother without knowing Nolan was her son.”
“Yes.”
That was an unexpected reversal.
Julian had unknowingly tried to repair part of his father’s reserve.
The process failed because address data stale.
Then other families.
Some restoration payments succeeded.
So Julian had been fixing pieces without understanding history.
Nolan returned.
Read.
Said nothing.
Then Julian told him:
“I should have told you when Harbor names appeared.”
“You didn’t know mine.”
“No.”
“Still.”
“Yes.”
Trust damaged.
Not destroyed.
Then microfilm final frame.
A bank receipt.
North Harbor Civic Fund transfer.
Seven million dollars moved to:
MORROW CLIENT ESCROW.
Charles Morrow.
Current status unknown.
He had told us he never personally controlled missing funds.
Yet seven million passed through his escrow.
We confronted.
His lawyer answered:
Funds were later disbursed under court mediated settlements.
Proof?
Partial.
Six million documented.
One million unresolved.
Where?
Charles claimed transferred to Thomas Sullivan for witness relocation and family protection expenses.
One million dollars.
My father.
That changed everything.
Did Thomas take stolen beneficiary money to disappear?
Charles said:
“It was not personal money. It funded confidential relocation.”
“For who?”
“Thomas.”
“And my mother?”
“No.”
“He left us.”
“Yes.”
“With one million dollars.”
“Not cash.”
Trust expenses.
Housing.
Medical.
Security.
Then one final microfilm note from Evelyn:
THOMAS USED RESERVE MONEY TO VANISH.
IF HE COMES BACK, HE OWES THEM THE TRUTH BEFORE HE OWES MAYA ANYTHING.
My mother had not forgiven him.
Neither would I automatically.
Then police called.
A fingerprint from Samuel Kessler’s pier scene matched a man currently living in Virginia under the name:
THOMAS VALE.

Continue to the next part: A fingerprint at Samuel Kessler’s murder scene matches a living man using the same alias Maya’s father once used after his official death.
