Chapter 8 - Louis Ferrara's Ledger

Louis Ferrara had worked for Adrian’s father before Adrian was old enough to vote.

Sixty-two.

Gray hair.

Church every Sunday.

Never carried gun.

That was why people trusted accountants.

Louis knew where money came from.

Which made him more dangerous than men standing at doors.

Federal investigators found:

Encrypted spreadsheets.

Cash disbursement notes.

Payments between Moretti and Volkov intermediaries.

Child-support account metadata.

Louis did not know Sarah’s exact address initially.

He knew:

Regular monthly transfer from Adrian’s lawful personal account to attorney-administered “LC Child Support Account.”

LC.

Lily Caldwell.

He asked Vincent years earlier.

Vincent told him:

“Family matter.”

Louis guessed.

Then Marco confirmed.

Louis sold financial verification to Volkov intermediary for $40,000.

His message:

Girl is not rumor. Moretti has been funding Caldwell child since birth.

That was enough.

Marco supplied routine.

Volkov supplied surveillance.

Again:

Adrian’s secret created paperwork.

Paperwork created leak.

Then Louis turned over a second ledger.

Not about Lily.

Moretti financial activity.

Adrian’s criminal lawyer DeLuca read first.

“Bad.”

“How bad?”

“Enough.”

The ledger supported:

Illegal betting revenues.

Cash loans.

Payments to union intermediaries.

Commercial extortion.

Purchase of stolen cargo.

Shell-company reimbursements.

Adrian had already begun admitting.

Louis corroborated.

Could Adrian stop cooperating?

Legally yes before formal plea.

Strategically impossible.

Morally worse.

Then Vincent.

He came to Adrian’s temporary residence after hospital discharge.

Adrian wore sling.

ICD wound healing.

No alcohol.

Vincent looked at pill bottles.

“You’ve become old man.”

“Forty-two is older than thirty-four.”

“Watch yourself.”

Adrian placed copy of proffer schedule on table.

“They want you Monday.”

“I have lawyer.”

“Good.”

Vincent sat.

“Louis flipped.”

“Yes.”

“You knew?”

“Today.”

“Marco?”

“Yes.”

“Everyone is flipping.”

“So are we.”

Vincent stared.

“Speak for yourself.”

Adrian leaned back.

“Do you want Lily safe?”

“Of course.”

“Then Volkov has to be handled by law.”

“You think prison stops network?”

“Not entirely.”

“So?”

“So I’m done creating the next retaliation.”

Vincent laughed bitterly.

“You think going federal witness makes you civilian?”

“No.”

“You think judges forget twenty years?”

“No.”

“Then what exactly are you doing?”

Adrian looked at him.

“Ending my part.”

Vincent stood.

“Easy for you to say. You have daughter now.”

“That is why I’m saying.”

“And what do I have?”

Adrian did not answer.

Vincent had no spouse.

No children.

An estranged sister in Boston.

A life built around Moretti.

That was the trap.

Organizations like theirs called men family while ensuring they had nowhere else to go.

Adrian said:

“You have yourself.”

Vincent scoffed.

“Profound.”

“I’m serious.”

“You expect me to walk into federal building and explain eleven years because you found morality in pediatric drawings?”

“No.”

“What then?”

“Because otherwise Louis explains you anyway.”

Vincent stared.

That was practical enough.

Then he sat again.

“What are they offering?”

“Nothing guaranteed.”

“Great.”

“Cooperation credit if substantial.”

“Prison?”

“Yes.”

Vincent rubbed face.

“Boss.”

“Don’t call me that.”

He looked up sharply.

“What?”

“Not anymore.”

“Adrian.”

“Yes.”

“That feels wrong.”

“It should.”

Then Adrian showed him Lily’s new drawing.

This time father had:

Black hair.

Two eyes.

A huge square body.

A heart drawn red in center.

Vincent stared.

“She put heart.”

“Sarah told her doctors fixed it.”

“She thinks you’re robot?”

“Possibly.”

Vincent smiled despite himself.

Then:

“I’ll proffer.”

Adrian exhaled.

“Truthfully.”

“Don’t push.”

“Truthfully.”

“Yes.”

Then federal case moved fast.

Search warrants at:

Moretti Maritime offices.

Harbor Line betting locations.

Two warehouses.

Volkov front companies.

Adrian signed consent for certain business records he controlled, while government still used warrants where needed.

No destruction.

No warning employees to wipe phones.

No moving cash.

That became cooperation evidence.

Then Volkov responded.

Not with shooting.

With message through lawyer.

Return the Red Hook business you stole and this ends.

Adrian’s attorney forwarded to FBI.

No answer.

Then another:

The child stays outside if you keep family outside.

Threat disguised as peace.

AUSA Miriam Cole documented.

Adrian said:

“He’s admitting leverage.”

“Potentially.”

“Use it.”

“We will.”

No private reply.

Then Dr. Elena Maren called:

“Your device recorded nonsustained ventricular tachycardia overnight.”

Adrian went still.

“Did I feel it?”

“No.”

“Meaning?”

“Meaning medication adjustment and rest.”

“I’m in federal meetings.”

“Your heart does not care.”

Then:

“If you keep treating every crisis as a reason to accelerate, eventually device may have to save you from yourself.”

Adrian looked at Lily’s red heart drawing.

“Understood.”

Elena:

“You say that a lot.”

“I’m improving.”

May you like

“Debatable.”

Continue to the next chapter: Louis Ferrara’s ledger corroborated years of Moretti crimes, Vincent agreed to cooperate rather than be sacrificed by someone else’s testimony, and Adrian’s implanted defibrillator recorded the first warning that even doing the right thing could still kill him if he kept living at the same pace.
