Chapter 14 - The Saturday After Prison

Lily was ten.
That fact shocked Adrian more than prison gate.
He remembered three.
Purple crayons.
Mr. Buttons.
Now she had braces starting soon, long legs, dark hair to shoulders, and the expression Sarah used when preparing to challenge someone.
She stood at park entrance.
Adrian stopped.
He had rehearsed:
Hi.
You grew.
I missed you.
All sounded stupid.
Lily solved.
“You’re shorter.”
Adrian stared.
“I’m six feet.”
“You looked taller on video.”
Sarah laughed.
Then Lily ran into him.
No request this time.
She wrapped arms around his ribs.
Adrian held her.
Long.
When she stepped back:
“You smell different.”
“Prison soap.”
“Gross.”
“Probably.”
They walked.
Supervised by family-reunification specialist initially, not armed guard.
Sarah stayed nearby.
Lily asked:
“Can you come to my house?”
“Not today.”
“Why?”
“Plan.”
“Can I see yours?”
“When approved.”
“Do you have bedroom for me?”
Adrian paused.
“I don’t have permanent house yet.”
Her face fell.
“I’m choosing one carefully.”
“Can I choose?”
“If your mom agrees.”
Sarah:
“You can have opinion. Not control mortgage.”
Lily grinned.
Then questions.
“Did you have friends?”
“Some.”
“Bad people?”
“People who did different things.”
“Did anyone hurt you?”
“No.”
“Did robot heart shock?”
“Once.”
“Did it hurt?”
“Yes.”
“Cool.”
Sarah:
“Lily.”
“It is.”
Then:
“Did you miss me every day?”
Adrian answered carefully.
“Most days I thought about you. Some days prison was busy or I was angry or tired. Loving someone doesn’t mean thinking one thought every second.”
Lily considered.
“Good.”
“Why?”
“I forget to miss people sometimes.”
Exactly.
Then family court.
Adrian petitioned for phased parenting time.
Sarah did not oppose contact.
She opposed immediate overnights.
Evaluator Dr. Samuel Price interviewed:
Adrian.
Sarah.
Lily.
Reviewed:
Conviction.
No history child abuse.
Prior unauthorized surveillance.
Prison conduct.
Therapy.
Current supervision.
Threat status.
Volkov incarceration.
No active Moretti organization.
Financial stability.

Then unsupervised daytime if stable.

No security personnel around child unless mutual consent/credible threat.
Sarah retained primary legal/physical custody initially.
Major decisions consultative, Sarah tie-break for first year.
Review after twelve months.
Judge adopted.
Adrian wanted more.
Did not fight.
Then housing.
He chose townhouse about fifteen minutes from Sarah, not same block.
Three bedrooms.
One for Lily.
Sarah inspected? Not right. She visited with evaluator for safety.
Lily chose wall color:
Dark green.
Adrian hated.
Allowed.
She put dinosaur poster.
Mr. Buttons stayed Sarah’s house mostly.
Then first unsupervised Saturday.
Adrian planned too much.
Museum.
Lunch.
Movie.
Bookstore.
Lily:
“I want stay home.”
“What do we do?”
“Nothing.”
Adrian discovered nothing is an activity.
They made grilled cheese.
Burned first batch.
Watched documentary.
Lily did homework.
He sat across.
No bodyguard.
No radio.
No emergency.
At six, Sarah picked up.
“How?”
Lily:
“He can’t cook.”
Adrian:
“Defamation.”
Sarah smiled.
Then Adrian’s work.
Probation limited certain business activities.
He had enough assets.
Did not need immediate job.
He consulted attorney and probation before taking any.
At forty-one, he began part-time investment-administration role through regulated family office? Could be risky. Better volunteer with reentry nonprofit, later legitimate property management of own investments. No access to others' funds.
He took course in compliance.
Managed own lawful portfolio through professionals.
No shell companies.
Then Vincent still incarcerated.
Adrian could not contact except approved letters.
One arrived:
Heard you’re out. Don’t get sentimental and buy kid a horse.
Adrian laughed.
He showed Sarah? No.
Then custody review after year.
Lily eleven.
She told evaluator:
“I want sleep at Dad’s.”
Sarah said:
“I’m comfortable with alternating Saturdays overnight initially.”
Adrian’s heart nearly stopped for nonmedical reason.
Order expanded:
Every other weekend one overnight.
One weekday dinner.
Shared consultation on education/medical, Sarah final tie-break during remaining supervision.
No international travel.
No criminal associates.
At first overnight Lily could not sleep.
“Why?”
“House noises.”
Adrian sat hallway.
“Want door open?”
“Yes.”
At two a.m.:
“Dad?”
First time without Adrian attached.
He froze.
“What?”
“Water.”
He brought.
May you like
That was all.
Continue to the next chapter: Adrian rebuilt custody one ordinary weekend at a time, and the first night Lily slept under his roof she finally called him simply “Dad”—not during a rescue, not through prison glass, but because she wanted a glass of water at two in the morning.
