Chapter 14 - Ron Finally Tells the Truth
Ron did not become sympathetic.
He became honest.
There is a difference.
His attorney convinced him the notary video destroyed any claim of innocent misunderstanding.
He had called himself Tom Hale.
Answered my birth date.
Acknowledged my signature.
He knew.
So Ron entered a proffer.
He admitted Derek told him:
“Tom won’t sign until he has to.”
Then:
“We’re recording anyway.”
Ron asked:
“Isn’t that fraud?”
Derek answered:
“Not if he ratifies.”
That became Derek’s legal theory.
Do the transaction first.
Pressure me into ratifying afterward.
Ron understood it was wrong.
Still joined.
Why?
Money.
His house was sold.
Savings invested.
He believed Mercer Shoreline’s collapse would wipe out retirement.
Then Derek promised the cabin.
Ron wanted Lake Norman.
He imagined fishing.
Boat.
Grandchildren someday maybe.
Status.
Then the U Haul plan.
Ron admitted:
“We wanted Tom to see us moved in.”
“Why?”
“So he would understand fighting meant throwing family onto street.”
But I had not put them there.
Derek did.
Then the shove.
Ron:
“He made me angry.”
Prosecutor:
“Who?”
“Tom.”
“What did Tom do?”
“Said it was his cabin.”
The prosecutor reportedly stared.
“That was true.”
Ron sighed.
“Yes.”
Then:
“I wanted him off the porch.”
There.
Intentional shove.
No accident.
Then settlement.
Ron knew about $50,000 offer.
He thought I might take.
“Why?”
“Because Tom doesn’t like conflict.”
Again.
Then capacity report.
Did Ron know?
“Yes.”
Did he know Claire had not filed it?
“I didn’t know that.”
Important.
He believed perhaps Claire genuinely worried.
Derek had manipulated him there too.
Then Linda.
Her separate testimony matched most.
But she added one detail.
After the notary session she wanted to back out.
She told Ron:
“Margaret is dead. This is evil.”
Ron answered:
“We already sold house.”
Sunk cost.
Then Derek called.
“If you back out now, there is nowhere for you to go.”
Not literally.
They had rental options.
But emotionally.
He trapped them with their own investment.
Linda still chose.
She got in U Haul.
Carried boxes.
Impersonated Margaret.
Not innocent.
But Derek’s method became clearer.
He made everyone feel there was no way backward.
Then prosecutors reached pleas.
Ron pleaded guilty to conspiracy, identity fraud by impersonation, attempted property fraud, and misdemeanor assault.
Recommendation:
Around thirty months active custody plus supervision and restitution, depending judge.
Linda pleaded guilty to conspiracy and identity fraud impersonation.
Because she cooperated early and had lesser planning role, prosecutors recommended a shorter custodial or split sentence.
No immunity.
Melissa already pleaded.
Derek remained trial.
Then Ron asked me through attorney whether I would accept an apology.
I said written.
No meeting.
Ron wrote:
Tom,
I knew you did not sign the deed.
Good start.
Then:
I told myself because Claire inherited someday, I was helping move paperwork forward.
Then:
That was a lie I used because I wanted a place to live and my money back.
Then:
I shoved you because you were standing between me and a future I had already spent.
That line was almost good.
Then:
I am sorry.
I wrote nothing.
Forgiveness can wait.
Then Ron ended:
Margaret did not deserve to have her name used by people she did not trust.
That sentence surprised me.
He understood at least that.
Then Deputy Mills called.
He had something to return.
The beer can?
No.
A small brass key found under U Haul loading ramp.
It belonged to Margaret’s old writing desk.
Linda had put the desk in the truck.
They had nearly taken it.
Inside its drawer, I found a handwritten note Margaret had once written to Claire.
Not evidence of crime.
Not legal.
