Chapter 8 - Denise’s Seal
Denise Wallace was furious.
Not defensive.
Furious.
When detectives showed her the document, she stared at the notary image.
“That is my seal.”
“Did you notarize this?”
“No.”
The document was titled Identity Confirmation Affidavit.
It stated Jessica personally appeared before Denise and confirmed she intended to refinance the Phoenix apartment.
Date:
Nine days before dinner.
Jessica had never met Denise privately.
Denise checked her journal.
Arizona notaries maintained records for certain acts.
No Jessica Ferris.
Then she noticed the stamp.
“My commission expiration is wrong.”
One digit.
Whoever copied seal used an older photograph.
Where would Carmen get it?
A document Denise had notarized for Carmen six months earlier.
A vehicle title.
Carmen kept copy.
She scanned seal.
That supported Denise.
Then Denise gave detectives her text thread with Carmen.
Carmen:
Need you Friday 8:30.
Denise:
What am I notarizing?
Carmen:
Jessica refinance.
Denise:
Both spouses owners?
Carmen:
Only Jessica title.
Denise:
Then I need her ID and she needs sign in front of me.
Carmen:
Of course.
Then:
She’s nervous. Don’t let her overthink.
Denise replied:
I won’t pressure anyone. If she doesn’t want sign I leave.
Carmen sent thumbs up.
That text may have saved Denise professionally.
Then another message Friday afternoon.
Carmen:
Jessica being difficult. Still come.
Denise:
If she says no, I cannot notarize.
Carmen:
She’ll say yes when room is watching.
There.
Witness pressure.
Denise said:
“I should have canceled right then.”
Maybe.
But she attended.
She saw Jessica’s bandage.
She saw Olivia.
She did not ask.
Guilt.
Then Marianne’s video revealed Carmen had introduced Denise to several guests:
“Denise is helping us finalize a family gift tonight.”
Jessica was in kitchen and did not hear.
Gift.
My mother planned to frame coerced loan as gift.
Then after I arrived, Denise had watched everything.
When I called police, she immediately texted herself? She actually sent to her husband:
Something is very wrong here.
Timestamp.
Good.
No conspiracy.
Then Carmen’s lawyer attempted another defense:
She believed Jessica had orally agreed months earlier to help buy condo.
Jessica denied.
Were there messages?
No.
One message from Jessica:
We’ll figure out something for Carmen when she’s ready to move.
That was it.
Carmen interpreted as financial promise.
Even if it were, no authorization for identity theft.
Then family witnesses.
Ruth, Carmen’s younger sister, came forward.
She lived Tucson.
She said Carmen had borrowed $18,000 from her before moving Phoenix.
Never repaid.
Why?
Carmen claimed Baltimore tenant had damaged house.
Actually foreclosure.
Ruth discovered months later.
She confronted.
Carmen said:
“Zayden will take care of me.”
Ruth told her:
“He has a wife and child.”
Carmen replied:
“That wife lives because of him.”
But Jessica had owned apartment and had been freelancing part time before Carmen pressured her to stop.
Then Ruth said something else.
“Carmen has always needed everyone to know her son succeeded.”
Status.
She told Baltimore friends Zayden bought Phoenix apartment.
She posted photos from balcony implying it was his.
She told people Jessica “didn’t work.”
Jessica actually handled remote billing and contract administration for two dental practices, earning around $42,000 annually part time until six months earlier.
Why stop?
One clinic owner produced email from Jessica:
I need to pause because family responsibilities have become unmanageable.
Jessica told me she was “taking a break.”
I accepted.
Carmen had been adding labor until paid work became impossible.
Cooking.
Guests.
Errands.
Cleaning.
Caring for Carmen.
Then Carmen used Jessica’s lack of current income as another custody note:
Financially dependent.
That was the trap.
First create dependence.
Then document it.
