Chapter 11 - Carmen’s Version
Carmen went to trial instead of taking the first plea.
Before that, her attorney attacked every part of the case.
Identity theft?
She claimed Jessica had verbally authorized her to “organize finances.”
Loan?
She claimed Jessica planned to buy Carmen a condo.
Custody folder?
She claimed she was documenting concerns for Olivia.
Food withholding?
“Traditional discipline.”
Dishwashing?
“Age appropriate chores.”
Burn?
“Accident.”
Passport and documents?
“Safekeeping.”
Everything had another name.
Then investigators found the Scottsdale realtor emails.
Carmen:
My daughter in law is gifting funds once refinance closes.
Realtor:
Wonderful. Will she be on title?
Carmen:
No. This is for me.
Then:
My son insists his mother have security.
I had never insisted.
Then an email to loan broker:
Jessica is emotional about money. Please communicate through me.
The broker replied:
We will still require direct borrower verification.
Carmen:
Understood.
Then to Denise:
She’ll sign when room is watching.
That destroyed the “voluntary gift” narrative.
Then fraudulent email address.
Who created?
Login records traced to Carmen’s tablet and apartment Wi-Fi.
The personal loan.
Credit cards.
Clear.
Then her defense shifted.
Carmen claimed she intended repay after selling jewelry and settling Baltimore debts.
Identity fraud does not become authorized because repayment imagined.
Then child welfare reports.
The second traced to her device.
She said:
“I was genuinely concerned.”
Yet report accused Jessica of withholding food while Carmen’s own videos and witness statements showed Carmen doing it.
Then one guest, Marianne, gave prosecutors more.
After Friday dinner began, Carmen told her:
“Tonight I finally get Jessica under control.”
Marianne thought she meant household rules.
Then:
“She’ll sign and everyone can stop pretending she runs this family.”
Marianne asked:
“Sign what?”
Carmen smiled.
“My future.”
That sounded dramatic only in hindsight.
Then another guest, Pauline Brooks, had received a private message from Carmen the week before:
Come Friday. Big announcement. I’m finally getting my Scottsdale place.
No mention Jessica consenting.
Then Carmen’s sister Ruth testified about foreclosure.
The defense tried to portray as sibling rivalry.
Ruth simply produced bank records and messages.
Carmen had hidden financial collapse from everyone.
Motive.
Then one surprising witness.
My father.
David Ferris.
I had not spoken to him in nine years.
He left when I was twelve and lived in Nevada.
Carmen’s defense had suggested his abandonment forced her to depend on me.
Prosecutors did not need him.
But he contacted Jessica’s lawyer after reading news.
He had old divorce records.
During their marriage, Carmen had opened a department store credit account in David’s name without permission.
It was resolved privately during divorce.
No criminal charge.
But it showed long-standing pattern? The judge might exclude as prior bad acts unless relevant. So likely not admitted at trial. But it mattered to me personally.
My mother had done financial boundary violations decades earlier.
I had grown up hearing:
Your father left us with debt.
Some debt had been hers.
David did not become hero.
He had still left.
Both truths.
He said:
“I should’ve told you more when you were older.”
I answered:
“You could’ve called.”
He nodded.
“Yes.”
No reconciliation.
But one mythology cracked.
Carmen had built my identity around owing her because she alone stayed.
She did stay.
She also manipulated.
Complex.
Then trial date.
Jessica would testify.
Olivia would not be forced to face Carmen live if prosecutors could use permitted child interview and other evidence; the court protected her where law allowed.
I would testify.
Twenty guests.
Bankers.
Realtor.
Denise.
Ruth.
No one story controlled anymore.
