Chapter 17 - Arthur Speaks

Arthur’s speech improved slowly.
One morning, nearly two years after Clara’s death, he said my name clearly.
“Alex.”
Not tablet.
Voice.
I froze.
“What?”
He tried again.
“Alex.”
I sat beside him.
His face twisted with effort.
“Sorry.”
One word.
I took his hand.
“No.”
He shook head.
“Should… tell.”
“You tried.”
He became frustrated.
I waited.
“Teresa… stop.”
“I know.”
“Me… weak.”
“No.”
He slammed his hand once.
His old signal.
“No.”
Then:
“Afraid.”
That I understood.
Arthur had been afraid of Vance before stroke.
After stroke, fear became dependence.
Teresa controlled phone.
Mail.
Money.
He still found ways.
Hidden phone.
Desk.
Code with Lily.
He had not done nothing.
But he had waited too long before stroke too.
Michael Dean.
Hannah Cole.
Northgate.
He suspected and documented but did not go outside company aggressively.
Why?
Retirement.
Pension.
Family.
Career.
Same disease in different form.
Protecting comfort by postponing truth.
Arthur knew.
He said:
“Clara… brave.”
“Yes.”
“More… me.”
I did not correct.
Months later, he testified in civil case against Vance Meridian’s insurers over certain recovered losses.
His testimony helped.
Then he stopped.
He wanted retirement actually to mean retirement.
He started gardening in containers on balcony.
Lily helped.
One tomato plant died.
Arthur blamed me with tablet.
ALEX WATER TOO MUCH.
Fair.
Teresa completed prison sentence after several years and entered supervised release.
She requested contact with Arthur.
He said no initially.
Then one phone call.
No reconciliation.
Their divorce final.
She moved to a small apartment near her sister? Beatrice after release? Maybe not. She moved near a cousin in Ohio.
She asked through counsel to send Lily birthday card.
I asked Lily.
“No.”
Done.
At ten, Lily changed mind.
“Maybe one.”
Card said only:
Happy birthday. I hope school is good. Love, Grandma Teresa.
No guilt.
No reference to family.
Lily kept it.
Did not respond.
Boundaries moved because Lily moved them.
May you like
Not because Teresa demanded.
That difference became the whole future.
