Chapter 10 - The Red Truck

In 2017, Vance Meridian lost an internal auditor named Michael Dean in a highway crash.

I barely remembered.

I had been a junior regional manager then.

Company email said Michael died when his sedan crossed centerline in rain and struck a delivery truck.

Arthur remembered because Michael had been reviewing Northgate Transit Solutions.

The same shell vendor Clara later found.

Red truck.

Arthur had seen a red Vance maintenance pickup leave the office lot behind Michael’s car the evening he died.

Did that mean murder?

No.

Not enough.

Police reopened old records cautiously after Arthur’s statement.

The crash report showed:

Michael lost control after a tire failure.

No evidence another vehicle struck him.

The red pickup was not documented.

Arthur had reported seeing it to Vance’s then general counsel.

Nothing happened.

A retired fleet mechanic was interviewed.

He remembered the red truck.

Assigned to an employee named Calvin Reed.

The nominal owner of Northgate Transit.

That looked alarming.

Then investigators found Calvin had an alibi at a hospital visiting his wife that evening.

The truck may have been used by someone else.

Or Arthur’s memory could be imperfect.

The crash did not become a murder case overnight.

Good.

I was learning accuracy.

What mattered was that Michael Dean had been investigating the same fraud.

His files disappeared after death.

Vance told board:

Michael closed review with no material findings.

That was false.

A backup recovered from old email archives showed Michael had scheduled a meeting with Arthur the next morning.

Subject:

Northgate duplication.

He died before it.

Did Vance kill him?

Still no proof.

Federal agents treated it as historical suspicious context.

Not charge.

Arthur was frustrated.

He typed:

VANCE DID.

I shook my head.

“Dad, maybe.”

His face hardened.

“I believe you saw something. But we need proof.”

He stared.

Then eventually nodded.

That was hard for him.

Harder for me.

Rage wants certainty.

Justice needs evidence.

The real case against Vance did not require Michael’s death.

Financial fraud.

Identity manipulation.

Obstruction.

Conspiracy to confine Clara.

Witness intimidation.

Delay after her fall.

Attempted destruction of evidence.

Those were enough.

Then prosecutors found stronger evidence tying Vance to my home.

His car’s navigation data.

At 8:54 Monday, before Clara fell, he entered our address into navigation.

He planned to come.

At 9:03, he texted Derek:

DO NOT LET HER LEAVE WITH PHONE OR PAPERS.

At 9:17:

KEEP HER UPSTAIRS.

At 9:31 after fall:

DO NOT CALL ANYONE UNTIL I GET THERE.

Direct.

Clear.

He did not plan Clara’s death.

He planned unlawful confinement.

Her death happened during it.

State prosecutors evaluated whether felony murder theory applied.

Depends state law and predicate felony.

They ultimately chose not to overcharge immediately.

They indicted Vance for conspiracy to commit unlawful confinement, obstruction, tampering, intimidation, and related offenses.

Federal indictment covered fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy, identity misuse, obstruction.

Derek faced involuntary manslaughter, unlawful confinement, assault, obstruction.

Teresa faced unlawful confinement, obstruction, child endangerment related to Lily’s detention? Maybe "contributing to risk" but not overcharge. Prosecution settled on unlawful confinement and obstruction.

Beatrice faced obstruction, falsification of funeral records, evidence concealment, and financial fraud.

Arthur was not charged.

He had accepted? No, Teresa took payments. Records showed he repeatedly tried to return.

Then came the corporate board’s most painful discovery.

Vance had tried to make me the fall guy months before Clara found anything.

A draft internal memo existed on his assistant’s deleted folder.

Subject:

Potential Carter Authorization Irregularities.

It outlined a future investigation into “Alex Carter’s possible use of unapproved subcontractors.”

The memo was dated six weeks before Clara’s email.

I stared.

“He was already setting me up.”

Dana nodded.

“Looks like.”

“Why me?”

“You were security operations. Your approvals touched routes. You had family connection to Arthur. If old fraud surfaced, you were convenient.”

“He selected Chicago…”

“To create distance and maybe a clean window.”

“Then Clara found everything.”

“Yes.”

She accelerated his plan.

Not caused it.

Vance had chosen me before.

That was the twist I had not expected.

My wife died trying to protect me from a trap already being built.

And the trap existed because my father had refused to forget what he knew.
