Chapter 13 - Marcus Pleads Guilty

The judge asked:

“When did you first realize Richard Hale did not knowingly agree to the financial transfers?”

Marcus swallowed.

“After he came home from rehabilitation.”

“More specifically.”

“He asked why VHM had his money.”

“How much had moved by then?”

“About four hundred thousand.”

“And what did you tell him?”

“That he approved.”

“Did you believe that?”

“At first.”

“When did that change?”

Marcus looked toward floor.

“When he told me to call Isabella.”

There.

Then:

“Why?”

“Because he said she would understand trust.”

“And did you call?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“My mother told me not to.”

Then judge:

“Did you alter his phone contact?”

“Yes.”

“Did you assist in creating documents with copied signatures?”

“Yes.”

“Did you copy notary seal?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know notary refused?”

“Yes.”

“Did you spend Richard’s money?”

“Yes.”

Then:

“Did you physically assault Richard?”

“No.”

Evidence did not say he did.

He mocked.

Controlled.

Stole.

But no fabricated assault.

Then watch.

Theft count included valuables.

“Did he give you gold watch?”

Marcus closed eyes.

“No.”

“Why did you take?”

“My mother said he wouldn’t need it and I was family now.”

The judge looked disgusted.

But sentence later.

Then:

“Did Vivian Hale direct you?”

“Yes.”

“Were you free to refuse?”

“Yes.”

Important.

Not child.

Thirty two.

He could refuse.

Then guilty.

Plea accepted.

Sentencing deferred until cooperation complete.

Marcus looked at Dad across courtroom.

Dad did not look.

I did.

Marcus’s face held shame.

Maybe real.

Maybe fear.

Not my job.

Then Vivian’s trial preparation intensified.

Her attorneys subpoenaed my employment records seeking conflicts.

I had investigated corporate fraud professionally.

They wanted suggest I manufactured case.

Judge limited.

They could question bias, not open unrelated client work.

Then my absence.

Six years.

Vivian had photographs of family holidays without me.

Dad and Marcus smiling.

Vivian caring for Dad.

Evidence she had real relationship.

Yes.

She was not cartoon villain every day.

She cooked.

Managed home.

Sat by Dad after surgery.

Organized rehab.

Then exploited.

People can care and control same person.

That complexity made trial harder.

Then Dad said:

“I loved her.”

I looked.

“Do you still?”

He took time.

“Part of me.”

No shame.

Then:

“She was good to me before Caroline paper became weapon.”

Maybe.

Or signs overlooked.

Then he admitted something else.

“I told her once that I was afraid you’d come back and take company.”

I stared.

“What?”

“After we fought.”

“Dad.”

“I was angry.”

“And she used.”

“Yes.”

He had helped create Vivian’s image of me as threat.

Then:

“I said Caroline left you too much control.”

“Mom left me beneficiary, not control.”

“I know now.”

No.

He knew then too, but resentment.

Then Vivian’s planned defense:

Richard wanted estate rebalanced because Isabella abandoned him.

Marcus became son who stayed.

Vivian believed transfers matched his wishes.

The forged notary seal was Marcus’s action without her knowledge.

Medication discussions were caregiving, not coercion.

Old Caroline amendment showed Richard routinely used informal signatures and later ratified.

Audio could be interpreted.

Then prosecution:

Digital drafts on Vivian laptop.

Messages.

Control plan.

Failed notary.

Richard testimony.

Marissa.

Marcus cooperation.

Bank records.

Strong.

Still jury.

Then I had to testify.

Again, my father’s old lie became part of cross.

“You left because you believed Richard was a criminal.”

“Yes.”

“You hated Vivian before returning.”

“No. I barely knew her.”

“You wanted Caroline Trust.”

“I was already beneficiary.”

“You stand to gain millions if original trust restored.”

“Yes.”

No hiding.

Then:

“So you profit if Vivian’s documents fall.”

“I receive whatever my mother’s valid trust provides regardless of whether Vivian likes it.”

Then:

“You coordinated attorneys before seeing father.”

“Yes.”

“Because you intended attack.”

“Because a nurse sent evidence of possible coercion.”

Then recording.

No issue.

Then defense asked:

“Did you shove Marcus?”

“Yes.”

“Twist his wrist?”

“Yes.”

“Threaten to break him?”

I had said? Prompt says "Touch my father again and I will break you!" In our Chapter 1 we didn't include exact line. We can say yes perhaps I said as he grabbed shoulder. We didn't narrate, but can now say after he grabbed? Need consistency. Maybe footage from foyer? There are cameras? Could be. We can acknowledge:

“Yes. After he grabbed my shoulder and moved toward my father.”

“Appropriate for lawyer?”

“No.”

Good.

Then:

“You arrived looking for fight.”

“No.”

“I arrived looking for my father.”

That was truth.

Then full recording played.

Vivian’s voice.

Double his dose.

If he wakes up clear, the whole transfer dies? That line was in Marcus recording, not Marissa. We have both.

Then jury would eventually decide.

But before trial started, Dad asked me the question I had feared.

“If Vivian is convicted, will you come home for good?”

I looked at him.

“Dad, Dallas is not the prize for telling truth.”

He went still.

I was not moving back because he suffered.

I had a life.

Love did not require relocation.

May you like

He nodded.

Another lesson.
