Chapter 3

The message from Attorney Dawson arrived at 6:42 in the morning.
Elena had barely slept.
The night before, she sat beside Noah and Lily's beds, watching them breathe peacefully.
She had spent hours wondering how she could explain everything to them one day.
How could she tell her children that their father chose another woman?
How could she explain that the family they trusted was changing?
She didn't want them to carry the pain of adults.
So she carried it herself.
Like she always had.
Then her phone vibrated.
One sentence appeared.
"Elena, you need to come to my office immediately. I found the original agreement."
Her heart sank.
Not because she was afraid.
Because she knew.
Every time someone said "original agreement" in Adrian's world...
It meant someone had been hiding the truth.
At Dawson & Partners, Elena walked into the conference room.
Attorney Dawson was already waiting.
He looked different.
More serious.
More concerned.
He placed a large folder on the table.
"I reviewed everything again."
Elena sat down.
"What did you find?"
Dawson opened the folder.
"Adrian didn't simply move assets before the divorce."
He pulled out several documents.
"He created a legal structure designed to protect those assets from you."
Elena stared.
"So he planned to leave me with nothing."
Dawson nodded.
"Yes."
A pause.
"But that's not the worst part."
Elena looked up.
"What is?"
He placed another document in front of her.
"This."
The paper was old.
The ink slightly faded.
But the signature at the bottom was clear.
Adrian Castillo.
Elena read the first few lines.
Then stopped.
Her face changed.
"What is this?"
Dawson answered quietly.
"A marriage protection agreement."
She frowned.
"We never signed this."
"No."

A pause.
"Because you didn't know it existed."
The document explained everything.
Years earlier, when Adrian's company was struggling, he created a private agreement.
An agreement stating that if the company succeeded, certain assets would remain protected.
But there was something hidden inside.
A condition.
A condition that made Elena the legal beneficiary of those assets.
Not Adrian.
Not his family.
Elena.
She looked confused.
"Why would he do that?"
Dawson leaned back.
"Because before Adrian became successful..."
"He loved you."
The words felt strange.
Almost painful.
Because Elena remembered that man.
The man who stayed awake with her during difficult nights.
The man who promised they would build a life together.
The man who disappeared slowly over the years.
"He changed the agreement later."
Dawson continued.
"He tried to remove your rights."
Elena looked at him.
"But?"
"But he failed."
"Why?"
"Because the original agreement required both signatures."
A pause.
"Yours and his."
Elena shook her head.
"I never signed anything."
Dawson nodded.
"Exactly."
The realization hit her.
Adrian didn't just betray her.
He trapped himself.
Everything he tried to hide...
Every move he made...
Every asset he tried to protect...
Was connected to the woman he thought he could discard.
Meanwhile, Adrian sat alone in his office.
The walls that once represented success now felt empty.
His phone showed dozens of missed calls.
From lawyers.
From business partners.
From Chloe.
He ignored them all.
He couldn't stop thinking about Elena.
Not the angry Elena.
Not the woman who confronted him.
The old Elena.
The woman who stood beside him when nobody believed in him.
The woman who believed in him before he became wealthy.
And he finally understood something painful.
He didn't lose her when he left.
He lost her years before.
Every time he ignored her.
Every time he chose work.
Every time he allowed his family to disrespect her.
The door opened.
Margaret entered.
"We need to discuss Chloe."
Adrian didn't look up.
"Why?"
"Because this situation needs to disappear."
He slowly turned.
"What did you say?"
Margaret hesitated.
"You need to think about your reputation."
Adrian stared.
"My reputation?"
A bitter laugh escaped him.
"Is that all anyone cares about?"
Margaret looked offended.
"Don't be dramatic."
That word.
Dramatic.
The same word they used whenever Elena expressed pain.
And suddenly Adrian realized.
He had become exactly like them.
"Mom."
His voice became colder.
"What did you know about Chloe?"
Margaret looked away.
"Nothing important."
"Don't lie to me."
Silence.
Then she sighed.
"Chloe was not who you thought."
Adrian waited.
"She approached this family intentionally."
His face tightened.
"What?"
Margaret continued.
"She knew your financial situation."
"She knew about the company."
"She knew about Elena."
The room became silent.
Adrian stood.
"No."
Margaret looked at him.
"Yes."
"Why?"
A pause.
"Because she believed you were going to become very wealthy."
Adrian felt sick.
"So she used me?"
Margaret didn't answer.
And that answer was enough.
At the same time, Elena sat with Dawson reviewing evidence.
Then another file appeared.
A medical report.
She looked confused.
"What is this?"
Dawson hesitated.
"Something connected to Chloe."
Elena opened it.
Inside were records from the prenatal clinic.
And another name.
Not Adrian.
Someone else.
Elena read the information carefully.
Then looked up.
"Who is this?"
Dawson's expression became serious.
"That's the person Chloe was with before Adrian."
Elena stared.
"Before?"
Dawson nodded.
"And according to these records..."
A pause.
"The timeline doesn't match."
Elena understood.
The pregnancy.
The affair.
The new family.
Everything.
There was a possibility that Adrian had destroyed his marriage...
For a child that was never his.
But Dawson wasn't finished.
"There is more."
He opened another document.
"Chloe didn't just hide the truth from Adrian."
"What else?"
"She contacted someone before she met him."
Elena frowned.
"Who?"
Dawson looked at her.
"Your husband."
Silence.
Elena's expression changed.
"Adrian?"
"No."
A pause.
"Someone else."
He pushed the document forward.
Elena looked at the name.
And froze.
Because the person who had been helping Chloe...
Was someone Adrian trusted completely.
That evening, Adrian finally received the call he had been avoiding.
It was his attorney.
"Mr. Castillo, we need to talk."
Adrian rubbed his face.
"About what?"
A pause.
"Your divorce agreement."
His stomach tightened.
"What about it?"
The attorney's voice became serious.
"Your wife has discovered the original documents."
Adrian went silent.
"Which means?"
"Which means you may have lost control of the assets you were trying to protect."
Adrian closed his eyes.
"How much?"
The attorney hesitated.
"Almost everything."
For the first time in his life...
Adrian felt what Elena felt.
Powerlessness.
Fear.
Loss.
But unlike Elena...
He had no one to blame.
Because he created this.
The next morning, Elena arrived at the courthouse.
Noah held her hand.
Lily carried her coloring book.
She looked at them.
Then looked forward.
She wasn't walking there for revenge.
She wasn't there to destroy Adrian.
She was there because she finally understood something.
A family isn't built by money.
A marriage isn't protected by signatures.
And love isn't proven by promises.
It's proven by choices.
And Adrian had made his choice.
Now...
He had to live with it.
Inside the courtroom, Adrian waited.
When Elena entered...
He looked at her differently.
Not as his wife.
Not as someone he could control.
But as someone he had underestimated.
The judge prepared the documents.
The attorneys took their positions.
Then Adrian's lawyer stood.
"Your Honor, before we begin..."
He looked uncomfortable.
"There is new evidence regarding Mr. Castillo's assets."
The courtroom became silent.
Elena looked at Dawson.
Dawson already knew.
Something bigger was coming.
The lawyer continued:
"The evidence suggests Mr. Castillo transferred ownership of several properties..."
A pause.
"...to a person who was never supposed to have legal access."
Everyone looked confused.
Adrian frowned.
"Who?"
The lawyer slowly turned.
And said the name.
The courtroom froze.
May you like
Because the person who received the hidden assets...
Was the last person Adrian expected.
