Chapter 2

The doctor’s words remained hanging in the room.

"There’s something you need to know about this baby."

Nobody moved.

Chloe’s smile slowly disappeared.

Adrian looked at the doctor, confused.

"What does that mean?"

The doctor glanced down at the medical file.

His expression was professional, but serious.

"I need everyone to remain calm."

That sentence made the room even more uncomfortable.

Because everyone knew.

Doctors didn't say that when everything was normal.

Margaret immediately leaned forward.

"What is wrong?"

The doctor looked at Chloe.

"Ms. Bennett, the results from the prenatal screening show something unexpected."

Chloe's hand tightened around Adrian's.

"Unexpected?"

The doctor nodded.

"There is a genetic inconsistency that requires further testing."

Adrian frowned.

"What kind of inconsistency?"

The doctor hesitated.

"The possibility of a biological mismatch."

Silence.

Nobody understood at first.

Then Adrian slowly looked at Chloe.

"What does that mean?"

Chloe's face became pale.

"It means..."

She swallowed.

"It means they need more tests."

But her voice lacked confidence.

And Adrian noticed.

For years, Adrian believed he was the smartest person in every room.

He believed he could predict people's actions.

Control situations.

Avoid consequences.

But now...

Sitting in that clinic...

He felt something he hadn't felt in a long time.

Fear.

Not because of the baby.

Because of the uncertainty.

Because suddenly he realized there were things happening around him that he didn't understand.

Meanwhile, inside the SUV, Elena continued reading the documents.

The more pages she turned...

The clearer the picture became.

Adrian hadn't simply betrayed her.

He had planned his exit.

The apartment lease.

The hidden accounts.

The private property.

Everything.

He wasn't leaving.

He was replacing her.

The hardest part wasn't the affair.

It was realizing that while she was trying to save their marriage...

He was already building a life without her.

Ten years.

That was how long Elena had been married to Adrian.

Ten years of believing they were partners.

When Adrian started his company, she was there.

When he failed, she supported him.

When he worked late nights, she handled the children.

When his business finally succeeded...

Everyone praised him.

Nobody mentioned her.

She never complained.

Because she believed marriage meant standing beside someone.

But she never realized she was standing beside someone who was slowly walking away.

The SUV stopped outside Elena's temporary apartment.

She helped Noah and Lily inside.

The children looked tired.

Noah looked up.

"Mom?"

Elena turned.

"Yes, sweetheart?"

"Are we not going home?"

The question hurt more than anything Adrian had done.

Because children didn't understand betrayal.

They only understood losing something familiar.

Elena knelt down.

"We are home."

Noah looked around the small apartment.

"But Dad isn't here."

Elena forced herself to smile.

"I know."

"When will he come back?"

She paused.

Because she didn't want to poison their hearts.

She didn't want them to hate their father.

Even if he deserved it.

"He loves you."

It was the hardest sentence she had ever spoken.

Because she wasn't sure it was true.

That night, after the children fell asleep, Elena called Attorney Dawson.

"I need answers."

The attorney was silent.

"I expected you would."

"How long?"

"What?"

"How long was Adrian planning this?"

A pause.

"Almost a year."

Elena closed her eyes.

Almost a year.

While she was cooking dinners.

Planning birthdays.

Helping with homework.

He was planning how to erase her.

"Dawson."

"Yes?"

"Why didn't you tell me earlier?"

The attorney sighed.

"Because I was legally representing Adrian during parts of the business transactions."

Elena froze.

"You knew?"

"I knew documents existed."

A pause.

"But I did not know the full extent."

Elena looked at the evidence envelope.

"And now?"

"Now I know."

His voice became serious.

"He wasn't just hiding assets."

"He was transferring them."

"To protect them from the divorce."

Elena stared at the documents.

"What does that mean?"

"It means Adrian wasn't preparing to leave."

A pause.

"He was preparing to make sure you left with nothing."

The next morning, Adrian arrived at Elena's apartment.

He looked exhausted.

Not angry anymore.

Desperate.

She opened the door but didn't invite him in.

"Where are the children?"

"At school."

He nodded.

Good.

At least they weren't there.

"Elena..."

She waited.

"I think we need to talk."

She almost laughed.

Talk.

A word Adrian loved using when he needed something.

"What about?"

He looked away.

"About everything."

She crossed her arms.

"Funny."

"What?"

"You had months to talk."

Silence.

"You chose silence."

Adrian looked at her.

"I made mistakes."

Elena's expression didn't change.

"Mistakes?"

A pause.

"You bought another home."

He looked down.

"You hid money."

Silence.

"You lied to me."

Another pause.

"You introduced another woman into our children's lives before we even finished the divorce."

His face tightened.

"I know."

"No."

Her voice remained calm.

"You don't."

For the first time, Adrian saw something terrifying.

Elena didn't hate him.

Hate would have meant she still cared.

She was simply finished.

And that was worse.

"I want shared custody."

Elena looked at him.

Of course.

That was why he came.

Not because he regretted hurting her.

Because he feared losing control.

"You want to be their father now?"

His face changed.

"That's not fair."

"Fair?"

She stared.

"You missed school events because work was more important."

A pause.

"You forgot birthdays."

Another pause.

"But now you want custody because you realize you can't control me anymore."

Adrian became quiet.

Because every word was true.

That afternoon, Chloe called Adrian.

Her voice was shaking.

"Adrian, we need to talk."

He immediately knew something was wrong.

"What happened?"

"The doctor called."

He stood.

"What did he say?"

Silence.

Then Chloe whispered:

"The additional tests came back."

Adrian's heart started racing.

"And?"

Her voice broke.

"They need you to come in."

"Why?"

A long pause.

"Because..."

She struggled to say it.

"Because the baby isn't genetically related to you."

Adrian froze.

The entire world seemed to stop.

"What?"

"Adrian..."

"No."

His voice became harder.

"That's impossible."

But Chloe started crying.

"I didn't know."

He closed his eyes.

Because suddenly...

Everything connected.

The lies.

The secrets.

The hidden apartment.

The betrayal.

He wasn't just the person who betrayed someone.

He had become the person who was betrayed.

That evening, Margaret came to Adrian's office.

Her face was pale.

"We need to handle this carefully."

Adrian looked at her.

"Handle what?"

She avoided his eyes.

"The situation with Chloe."

He stared.

"Mom."

Silence.

"What aren't you telling me?"

Margaret sat down.

For the first time in years...

She looked afraid.

"There are things about Chloe you don't know."

Adrian felt cold.

"What things?"

Margaret looked away.

And then she said the sentence that changed everything.

"Your father and I warned you not to rush into this relationship."

Adrian frowned.

"My father?"

A pause.

"He knew something."

The room went silent.

"What did he know?"

Margaret looked at him.

"He knew Chloe wasn't the person she pretended to be."

At that moment, Adrian realized something.

The woman he left Elena for...

Might have been the biggest mistake of his life.

And somewhere across the city...

Elena was receiving a message from Attorney Dawson.

A message containing one final piece of evidence.

May you like

A document that would reveal why Adrian abandoned his marriage...

And why Chloe entered his life in the first place.
