Chapter 9 - The Father Behind the Glass
Emma stood frozen beneath Daniel’s arm.
Her eyes found Rachel.
“Mom?”
Rachel made a sound that seemed pulled from years of grief.
Daniel tightened his grip.
“Do not move.”
Lily held Toby against her chest.
The vapor continued pouring into the chamber.
Gideon wrapped his jacket around Toby’s face and searched the walls for ventilation controls.
Amelia used the archive drive to access the central system.
A warning appeared.
STRUCTURAL PURGE ACTIVE.
Daniel had placed explosives throughout the underground facility.
If triggered, the collapsing hillside would bury every laboratory, file, and witness beneath thousands of tons of earth.
“He plans to erase everything,” Amelia said.
Daniel watched through the glass.
“I offered all of you a place inside something larger than yourselves.”
Rachel stared at him.
“You imprisoned children.”
“I preserved rare biology.”
“They are people.”
“They became valuable because I gave them purpose.”
Emma looked at her father.
“You told me Mom left.”
“She did.”
Rachel moved closer to the glass.
“I escaped because he used me for procedures.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“She was unstable.”
Lily whispered, “That’s what you said about me.”
He looked toward her.
“You are confused.”
“No.”
“You need treatment.”
“No.”
The word became stronger.
Daniel pointed the gun toward Emma’s head.
“Lily, lock the enclosure.”
Lily looked down at Toby.
His small hand gripped her uniform.
She carried him to Gideon instead.
Daniel’s expression became empty.
“You are no longer useful.”
Lily flinched as though struck.
Rachel placed one hand against the glass.
“You are useful because you are alive.”
Emma began crying.
“Mom, I’m sorry.”
“You did nothing wrong.”
“I believed him.”
“You were a child.”
Daniel moved toward an exit door with Emma.
Detective Ortiz’s team reached the upper corridor, but security barriers blocked access.
Amelia found a manual override inside the archive.
It required two biometric keys.
One belonged to Daniel.
The other belonged to Gideon.
“Why me?”
“Northstar used your company’s defense security architecture,” Amelia said. “They embedded your authorization as a backup.”
Gideon pressed his hand to the scanner.
Daniel’s half remained locked.
Rachel knew another way.
The system had been built using her genetic profile as the medical administrator identity.
She pressed her palm to the second scanner.
The barriers opened.
Federal agents flooded the corridor.
Daniel fired.
The bullet struck the glass beside Rachel.
Emma dropped to the floor.
Lily screamed.
Gideon covered Toby while Ortiz returned fire.
Daniel fled through the lower service tunnel.
The countdown continued.
Four minutes.
Agents evacuated the children and recovered as many servers as possible.
Amelia refused to leave.
“The archive still contains live locations.”
“We have the drive,” Gideon said.
“Only part of it. The server holds the names of every child currently being transported.”
“You will die if you stay.”
“So will they if I leave.”
Gideon understood the impulse.
He also saw Maya’s face when Amelia disappeared again.
“Download what you can. Then leave.”
“I need more time.”
“You do not have it.”
For once, he did not abandon his children for work, evidence, or the promise of fixing everything later.
He lifted Toby and led Emma and Lily toward the exit.
Rachel followed.
Amelia remained at the terminal.
Ethan ran back for her.
The countdown reached ninety seconds.
Outside, Maya waited inside an armored medical vehicle.
When she saw Toby, she pushed through the agents and wrapped both arms around him.
“You came back.”
Gideon knelt beside her.
“Yes.”
She looked behind him.
“Mom?”
He turned toward the facility.
Ethan emerged supporting Amelia.
The ground shook.
The entrance collapsed behind them.
A cloud of earth and concrete rolled across the clearing.
Amelia reached the vehicle seconds before the hillside fell.
Maya stared at her.
This time Amelia did not explain.
She simply said, “I almost left you again.”
“Yes,” Maya answered.
“I’m sorry.”
Maya did not forgive her.
But she allowed Amelia to sit nearby.
Daniel escaped through the tunnel before the collapse.
The archive download revealed active Northstar locations across the United States and Canada.
Federal teams rescued seventeen children and four adults.
Dozens more remained missing.
Isla agreed to testify against Daniel in exchange for reduced charges, though she still faced prosecution for kidnapping, abuse, surveillance, and conspiracy.
Gideon resigned temporarily from Mercer Aeronautics.
He began attending therapy with Maya and Toby.
He stopped calling expensive gifts love.
He learned breakfast routines, bedtime songs, and the difference between being in the house and being emotionally present.
Three months later, Rachel and her daughters moved into protected housing.
Emma and Lily began learning how to become sisters.
Amelia lived separately while rebuilding trust with Maya.
No quick reunion repaired the years of absence.
Then Gideon received an anonymous package at his new apartment.
Inside was the baby monitor from the hallway.
Police had taken it as evidence months earlier.
A new recording had been added.
Daniel’s voice spoke first.
“Isla failed.”
Then another man answered.
A voice Gideon recognized immediately.
