Chapter 4 - The Warning from His Dead Wife

Amelia Mercer had never trusted smart home technology.
She covered laptop cameras with tape and refused to install voice assistants near the children.
Gideon had teased her about it.
He called her overly cautious.
Now investigators found a hidden compartment behind a framed photograph in Amelia’s old studio.
Inside was a notebook.
The first page contained one sentence.
If anything happens to me, Daniel Cole is responsible.
Gideon sat on the studio floor while Detective Ortiz photographed every page.
Amelia had discovered that Northstar systems were collecting private data without consent. Her nonprofit worked with domestic abuse survivors, several of whom reported that violent partners seemed to know what they told lawyers and therapists.
The homes had one connection.
Northstar security equipment.
Amelia hired a cybersecurity specialist and began documenting unauthorized transmissions.
She traced the data to Daniel.
Then a woman approached her at a charity fundraiser.
Isla Bennett.
Amelia described her as charming, observant, and dangerously interested in Gideon’s travel schedule.
Amelia believed Isla was gathering information about the Mercer family.
Three weeks later, Amelia’s boat exploded on Lake Washington.
The investigation blamed a fuel leak.
Her notebook suggested otherwise.
She wrote that Daniel had learned she copied Northstar’s client archive.
The archive identified every compromised home and recorded crime.
Bribery.
Affairs.
Violence.
Corporate theft.
Political corruption.
Amelia hid the archive somewhere accessible only with a silver key.
Before her final trip, she gave the key to Maya.
She warned her daughter not to trust a beautiful blonde woman who might come looking for it.
At six years old, Maya did not understand.
Months later, Gideon introduced Isla.
Maya recognized her from Amelia’s description.
She tried to tell him.
He thought she was grieving.
Isla convinced him Maya resented anyone replacing her mother.
Gideon closed the notebook.
“I failed her.”
Detective Ortiz remained beside him.
“You were manipulated.”
“I chose not to listen.”
“Both can be true.”
The distinction offered no comfort.
Downstairs, investigators questioned Isla about Amelia’s death.
She denied involvement.
Then police showed her the notebook.
For the first time, genuine fear crossed her face.
“Daniel killed her,” Isla said.
“Were you involved?”
“No.”
“You approached Amelia before the explosion.”
“Daniel told me to learn what she knew.”
“Why did you marry Gideon?”
“I needed access to the house.”
“And his company.”
“Yes.”
“Why imprison Emma?”
“Daniel brought her here.”
“Why punish Maya and Toby?”
Isla looked toward the camera.
“I needed the key.”
“You left a toddler in a freezing hallway.”
“Maya responds to pressure.”
Detective Ortiz leaned closer.
“She protected her brother while you tortured her.”
Isla’s lips tightened.
“I did not torture anyone.”
The recorded monitor voice played.
You stay in the hall until you learn.
Isla looked away.
Gideon watched from behind the glass.
He had once admired her composure.
Now he recognized it as practiced emptiness.
Detective Ortiz asked where the silver key was.
“Maya gave it to me two weeks ago.”
“What did you do with it?”
“I gave it to Daniel.”
Daniel denied receiving it.
Police searched his home, office, and vehicles.
No key.
Emma said her father carried a silver key on a chain beneath his shirt after visiting Isla.
The night Emma escaped from the nursery briefly, she heard Daniel arguing through the baby monitor.
He told Isla the key opened something at Amelia’s lake house.
The lake house had been abandoned since the explosion.
Police obtained a warrant.
Inside the boathouse, investigators found scratches around one floorboard.
The silver key opened a metal box beneath it.
The box was empty.
Someone had reached it first.
A camera across the marina captured a vehicle leaving the property six hours earlier.
The car belonged to Gideon’s chief financial officer, Marcus Vale.
Marcus had worked beside Gideon for eighteen years.
He was Toby’s godfather.
He had attended Amelia’s funeral.
When police approached his Seattle apartment, they found the front door open.
Marcus lay unconscious on the kitchen floor.
The silver key rested beside his hand.
The metal archive drive was missing.
On the wall above him, someone had written in black marker:
