Chapter 10 - The Message Inside Maya’s Backpack

Marcus disappeared before police reached his apartment.
The injuries he suffered after retrieving Amelia’s archive had been real.
So was his betrayal.
Investigators found encrypted Northstar payments hidden beneath his Mercer Aeronautics compensation.
He had provided travel schedules, building access, company credentials, and personal information about Gideon’s children.
For eighteen years, Marcus had stood close enough to observe every weakness.
He knew when Gideon traveled.
He knew when Amelia became suspicious.
He knew Maya trusted him because he brought books instead of toys.
He was Toby’s godfather.
He had offered to care for the children during business trips.
Gideon remembered every moment Marcus encouraged him to leave.
The Frankfurt contract cannot wait.
Maya will understand.
Isla has everything handled.
Your family needs the company to remain strong.
Marcus had not merely exploited Gideon’s absence.
He had helped create it.
Detective Ortiz placed the family under emergency protection again.
Maya returned from school with a folded paper inside her backpack.
It contained a drawing of the Mercer hallway.
Two children sat on the floor.
A man stood at the end holding a briefcase.
Behind him was a dark doorway.
Someone had written:
YOUR FATHER OPENED THE WRONG DOOR.
Maya insisted she had not placed it there.
School cameras showed Marcus entering the building disguised as a maintenance worker.
He walked past Maya’s classroom but never approached her directly.
He wanted Gideon to know he could.
Police traced his vehicle toward the Washington coast.
The abandoned car contained blood, a satellite phone, and a photograph of Daniel Cole.
Daniel’s face had been crossed out.
Marcus was no longer working with him.
He was eliminating him.
A voice message on the satellite phone revealed the truth.
Marcus spoke to an unknown woman.
“Daniel lost control of the network. Amelia exposed the laboratories. Gideon has the archive fragments. We need the children moved before federal teams reach the final site.”
The woman replied:
“Which children?”
“All of them. Especially Maya.”
“Why the girl?”
“Because Amelia gave her more than a silver key.”
Gideon replayed the sentence.
Amelia went pale.
Before the boat explosion, she had hidden a biological storage capsule inside one of Maya’s childhood keepsakes.
The capsule contained a master encryption seed created from Northstar’s earliest medical database.
Amelia believed it was destroyed.
Maya remembered a small glass star her mother gave her.
She kept it inside an old music box.
Police searched the Mercer house.
The music box was gone.
Isla had taken it months earlier but never understood what it contained.
She passed it to Marcus while attempting to secure his help against Daniel.
Marcus now possessed the only key capable of unlocking Northstar’s complete global archive.
That archive could expose every victim.
It could also give him control over every hidden recording, medical profile, political secret, and illegal transport route.
“He needs Maya because she knows the song,” Amelia said.
“What song?”
“The music box played a sequence used as the second encryption key.”
Maya sat at the table.
“I remember it.”
Amelia looked toward her.
“You must not sing it for anyone.”
Maya’s face hardened.
“Everyone keeps telling me what I must do after giving dangerous things to me without explaining.”
Amelia lowered her eyes.
“You are right.”
Gideon asked Maya whether she could write the notes.
She could.
Federal analysts combined the melody with recovered archive fragments.
The code opened one protected directory.
Inside was a live camera feed.
Rows of children sat inside an underground transit station.
Some were infants.
Others were teenagers.
A timestamp showed the video was current.
Marcus appeared before the camera.
He wore a dark coat and held Maya’s glass star.
“Gideon, you spent years believing money could protect your family. Now your money will buy these children’s freedom.”
A number appeared on a sheet of paper he held toward the lens.
Five hundred million dollars.
Nearly the entire liquid value of Mercer Aeronautics.
Marcus continued.
“Transfer control of your company and bring Maya to the location I provide. She plays the melody. The archive opens. The children leave.”
Gideon stared at the screen.
“If I bring her, he will keep her.”
Detective Ortiz nodded.
“If you refuse, he may begin moving the children.”
Maya entered the room before anyone could stop her.
“I heard him.”
Gideon turned off the screen.
“You are not going.”
“He wants the song.”
“We can recreate it.”
“What if we are wrong?”
“We find another way.”
“You always said that before leaving.”
The words no longer held only anger.
They carried a question.
Would he choose the mission again?
Would he sacrifice presence for the promise of a better future?
Gideon knelt.
“I will not use you as bait.”
“What about those children?”
“We will save them without trading you.”
“How?”
“I do not know yet.”
It was an honest answer.
Maya looked toward the frozen image of Marcus.
Then she opened her hand.
The silver music cylinder from the missing box rested in her palm.
Everyone stared.
“I took it out before Isla found the box,” she said.
Amelia exhaled.
“You had it all this time?”
“I hid it because Mom told me not to trust the pretty lady.”
“Where?”
Maya looked toward Toby, who slept nearby with his baby blanket tucked beneath his chin.
“Inside his blanket.”
The same blanket she had wrapped around him on the freezing hallway floor.
The object Isla had searched for had been inches from her every night.
Maya handed the cylinder to Gideon.
Federal analysts extracted the true encryption key.
The global archive opened.
Locations appeared across twelve countries.
Law enforcement operations began immediately.
The underground station from Marcus’s video was identified beneath an abandoned railway terminal outside Tacoma.
Gideon remained at the command center with Maya.
He did not enter the raid.
He did not leave her to prove courage somewhere else.
Tactical teams rescued forty three children.
Daniel Cole was found alive inside a locked maintenance room, injured and abandoned by Marcus.
Marcus escaped before officers reached the command chamber.
The glass star remained on the table.
A final note lay beneath it.
YOU FOUND THE CHILDREN I WANTED YOU TO FIND.
The archive listed forty three rescued victims.
But the global database contained fifty one active profiles.
Eight children were still missing.
One profile had no photograph.
Only a name.
TOBIAS MERCER.
Gideon looked toward the sleeping boy.
Toby was safe beside Maya.
Then the profile updated.
Status changed from active to duplicate.
A second Tobias Mercer existed.
Same birthday.
Same genetic markers.
Same embryo identification number.
Amelia stared at the screen.
“That is impossible.”
Rachel examined the laboratory records.
The clinic had divided the manipulated embryo before implantation.
One child had been carried by the surrogate and raised by Gideon.
The second had been hidden inside Northstar’s medical program.
Toby had an identical twin.
The missing child’s location updated for one second before disappearing.
Seattle, Washington.
Less than two miles from the Mercer home.
Then Gideon’s baby monitor activated by itself.
A small boy’s voice came through the speaker.
“Daddy?”
Toby woke and looked toward the monitor.
The voice continued.
“It’s cold here.”
Maya grabbed Gideon’s hand.
May you like
Behind the child’s breathing, Marcus whispered one final sentence.
“You opened the nursery door, Gideon. Now come open mine.”
