Chapter 22 - The Last Board Packet

Aurelia sent me a board packet by mistake five years after I left.

Old distribution list.

I opened first page before realizing.

Quarterly results.

I smiled.

Then called secretary.

“I shouldn’t have this.”

Panic.

“We’re sorry.”

“Delete access, document.”

They did.

Old Audrey would have kept reading out of curiosity.

No.

Confidential information not mine.

That tiny decision felt like final exam.

Then company’s independent board asked if I would serve on anniversary advisory committee.

“No.”

Why?

No need.

Then they asked for oral history interview.

I agreed.

Archivist.

Not marketing.

Questions.

“What did it feel like when Malcolm announced you?”

“Awkward.”

She laughed.

“Triumphant?”

“Briefly.”

Then:

“What did you know at that moment?”

“Northstar had closed. Payments under investigation. Julian had affair. Earrings likely mine.”

“What didn’t?”

“Full vendor scheme. Kickbacks. Camilla’s profit agreement. Julian’s pass through.”

Then:

“So famous line, ‘we will review unauthorized payments,’ was not accusation of theft?”

“Correct.”

Important.

Then:

“Did you plan line?”

“No.”

“Did you plan to humiliate husband?”

“No.”

“Why stay?”

“Because I was there for transaction announcement.”

Then:

“Did you know he’d tell you leave?”

“No.”

The archivist paused.

“People tell story like trap.”

“I know.”

“It wasn’t.”

“No.”

Then:

“What did you think when he shoved you?”

“That everyone saw.”

Then:

“What hurt most?”

I took long.

“The room pretending not to.”

Yes.

Then she asked:

“Why?”

“Power.”

Then:

“Did ownership fix?”

“No.”

“It changed who people thought could punish them.”

That is not same as respect.

Then:

“Would you want video archived?”

“No public.”

Aurelia had hotel footage in legal archive retention then later destroyed per policy after cases. Good.

No spectacle.

Then she asked about earrings.

“Off record.”

Fine.

Then oral history stored restricted? Some public summary.

No revenge legend.

Then Aurelia board secretary corrected distribution process. Good.

Then Northstar had its own data incident? No.

No need.

Then at seventy? Could time jump. Audrey early 30s at start; 30+ years later around late 60s. Fine.

At sixty eight, I reduced travel.

Kept voting in Northstar as shareholder? not control.

Priya retired, new CEO.

Company survived two transitions.

Good.

Then Charlotte Mercer Foundation had scholarship recipient named Camilla? Irony. No.

Then I met a young woman whose husband called her “decorative.”

She asked me for advice.

I said:

“Do not buy his employer.”

She laughed.

Then:

“Seriously?”

“Find out whether contempt is pattern, and make safety/financial plan.”

No revenge.

Then one of Aurelia’s original employees, Daniel Torres, died. His family sent note thanking retirement plan. Not needed.

Then Sophie passed? no.

Then Malcolm gone.

Time.

Then I opened my estate plan.

I had decided earrings auction after death.

Crystal flute to Aurelia archive? Maybe.

Black folder gone.

Silver gown donated.

No relics.

My Northstar equity to foundation and partners according buy sell.

No dynasty.

Then I added one line in personal letter:

If you inherit anything from me, remember possession is not proof of deserving.

Maybe.

Then I signed with independent witnesses.

No drama.

Then attorney asked:

“Any former spouse provision?”

“No. Divorce final decades.”

Julian no claim.

Then:

“Any reason for special litigation clause?”

“No.”

Good.

No final secret.

Then a year later, I received obituary alert.

Camilla Price, age? Maybe early 70s? Perhaps too soon. Not necessary. Let people live.

Final closure doesn't need death.

Then Halcyon Hotel announced ballroom renovation and reopening.

Aurelia booked fortieth anniversary.

They invited me.

This would be last return.

I decided yes.

May you like

Not because unresolved.

Because I liked champagne.
