Chapter 12 - Aurelia After Julian

Companies do not heal like people.

They fix controls.

Replace executives.

Lose customers.

Win others.

Aurelia’s first year under Sophie Grant was difficult.

One client canceled because scandal.

Two senior managers left.

The board spent heavily on compliance and audit.

Employee morale dropped.

Northstar had not bought a fairy tale.

We bought a good company with weak governance and heavy debt.

Sophie cut executive perks.

Sold private aviation membership.

Renegotiated office lease.

Closed underperforming London sales branch.

No companywide layoffs.

Some jobs lost through closures.

Northstar injected second tranche of capital after milestones.

Then product.

Aurelia’s core secure infrastructure platform released version seven.

Strong sales.

Cash flow improved.

Debt reduced.

Employees received profit sharing restored after two years.

Northstar did well.

The investment became financially successful.

That mattered because if Aurelia failed, story would become Audrey burned money for revenge.

I did not.

Then board asked me to join.

Two years after divorce.

Special investigation complete.

Criminal case resolved.

Conflict reduced.

I accepted one seat.

Not chair.

Mara Chen remained Northstar director.

Independent chair Helen Castillo led.

At first board meeting, my nameplate:

AUDREY VANCE

Director.

No “majority owner.”

No founder.

Then Sophie presented marketing budget.

A new vendor.

I asked:

“Related party checks?”

Everyone laughed nervously.

I did not.

Then smiled.

“Sorry.”

Controls mattered.

Then company created vendor disclosure portal.

Two signature approvals.

Rotation.

Whistleblower protection.

Olivia Grant, former finance manager, was offered return.

She declined.

Good.

Aurelia paid settlement for retaliation and apologized.

She had new life.

We did not need her return to symbolize repair.

Then Camilla after release.

She worked freelance? Could be difficult. She moved to Atlanta and joined small nonprofit communications after disclosing conviction. She repaid over years. No contact.

Then earrings.

I finally wore them again.

Northstar annual dinner.

I stood before mirror.

My mother’s diamonds.

For a moment Camilla’s gold gown flashed in memory.

I almost removed.

Then stopped.

She wore them once.

Charlotte wore them for decades.

Ownership of memory should follow longer history.

I kept.

Mara saw.

“Those?”

“Yes.”

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

Then she smiled.

“Charlotte would have hated the whole thing.”

“She would have billed everyone for her time.”

We laughed.

Then my personal life.

I did not date for two years.

Not because traumatized permanently.

Because tired.

Then someone? Could add later but not necessary. User story can focus.

I bought a condo in Boston and kept apartment Dallas due Aurelia.

Northstar continued deals.

I was not full time Aurelia operator.

Then an interviewer at private markets conference asked:

“Was Aurelia acquisition personal?”

I answered publicly for first time.

“No.”

Then:

“The investment process began before internal review. Northstar’s investment committee approved transaction based on company fundamentals.”

“What about your former husband?”

“His conduct was handled through independent company governance.”

No more.

Then:

“Did you know affair?”

“Personal.”

Good.

I refused content bait.

Then Julian completed custody after about eighteen months with credits? He got 22 months and served maybe 17. Fine.

He did not return to Aurelia.

Employment agreement barred? No need. Conviction and settlement included non disparagement and no solicitation perhaps.

He moved to Denver.

Started looking work.

The industry knew.

Hard.

He wrote me once:

I got rejected because of conviction.

I did not answer.

Not my role.

Then another months later:

I finally found something.

I still did not answer.

He had not asked question.

Then one year later, Claire received request:

Julian wants permission to write directly.

No restraining order after diversion and divorce, but we had asked no contact voluntarily.

I said no need.

Not cruel.

Closed.

Then company annual anniversary returned.

Three years after gala.

Halcyon Hotel again.

Malcolm invited as retired chair.

Camilla not.

Julian not.

I wore silver? No, maybe navy.

The champagne table was in same corner.

I looked.

No physical reaction.

Then Malcolm approached.

“Want announcement?”

I laughed.

“Absolutely not.”

Sophie gave.

Employees cheered because annual bonus restored.

That was better announcement.

Then Malcolm said:

“You know, he truly thought I was making him president.”

“I know.”

“I should have corrected harder.”

“Yes.”

He smiled.

“You never let me off.”

“No.”

Then:

“Good.”

Then an employee asked for photo with majority owner.

I said:

“Take with Sophie.”

May you like

The company did not need another personality cult.

Not even mine.
