Chapter 11 - The Recording Camilla Kept

Camilla had recorded one conversation with Julian.
One.
She said she made it because she feared he would deny the Meridian arrangement if discovered.
It happened in his office eight months before gala.
Texas is one party consent? Texas is one party. She was participant.
Audio:
Camilla:
Olivia is asking for beneficial ownership.
Julian:
Then give her Adrian.
Camilla:
She asked if I get money.
Julian:
Do not put that in writing.
Camilla:
It is already in my agreement.
Julian:
Your agreement is with Adrian, not Aurelia.
Camilla:
That doesn’t make it okay.
Then Julian laughed.
“If I’m president in six months, nobody will care who made a hundred grand off PR.”
Camilla:
And if you aren’t?
Julian:
I will be.
Then:
“Meridian keeps us both happy. That is the point.”
Camilla:
What about Ashwell?
Julian:
Patrick sends my cut.
Direct.
Then:
Camilla:
You’re calling it loan repayment.
Julian:
Because that’s cleaner.
Silence.
Camilla:
There was no loan.
Julian:
There was once.
Camilla:
Ten grand.
Julian:
Details.
That recording broke core defense.
He knew.
He called pass through his cut.
Then Camilla:
“Why are you doing this? You make more than enough.”
Julian answered:
“Because I’m tired of Audrey having money I can’t touch.”
My stomach turned.
Camilla:
What does she have to do with Meridian?
Julian:
Nothing.
Then:
“It’s just nice having something that’s mine.”
There.
Not need.
Resentment.
Then Camilla said:
“You have salary.”
Julian:
“That feels like work.”
He wanted hidden money because mine existed beyond him.
The recording did not make Audrey responsible.
But revealed psychology.
Then criminal plea negotiation.
Julian’s attorney requested meeting.
Prosecutors offered plea to reduced felony count involving scheme and business record falsification, restitution, no mandatory maximum. Sentencing could include custodial term.
He refused initially.
Then Patrick’s testimony.
Then Adrian’s.
Then Camilla.
Evidence.
Finally his lawyer pushed.
Trial exposure higher.
Julian accepted.
He pleaded guilty to conspiracy to defraud company and one falsification count, with commercial bribery count dismissed under agreement but conduct considered in sentencing.
He admitted receiving $85,000 routed through Ashwell and undisclosed travel/watch benefits.
He admitted knowing Camilla’s Meridian profit arrangement.
He admitted false no conflict certification.
No claim every vendor dollar stolen.
Then judge asked:
“Why?”
Julian looked down.
“I thought I was going to run company.”
That sentence.
Then:
“And?”
“I thought the rules would not matter once I did.”
There.
Everything.
He received twenty two months custody, followed by supervision, restitution, and financial compliance conditions.
Not decade.
No prior record.
Documentary nonviolent financial offense.
He also settled civil case:
Repay $85,000 kickback.
Value of certain benefits.
$410,000 clawback.
Additional contribution toward investigation costs.
Some insurance/indemnity disputes resolved.
His vested Aurelia shares could be sold back at fair market value under agreement, with proceeds applied partly to obligations.
Not confiscated.
Then Camilla.
She pleaded to lesser conspiracy and falsification due early cooperation.
Received six months home confinement or custody? Let's say eight months custody plus supervision, restitution $186k and other benefits. Adrian got similar maybe twelve months. Patrick probation/home confinement. Keep minimal.
Then Julian called me before surrender through attorneys requesting one meeting.
Claire asked:
“Do you want?”
I thought.
“Yes.”
Public law office.
No romance.
He looked older.
“Audrey.”
“Julian.”
Then:
“Did you listen to recording?”
“I received summary.”
He looked ashamed.
“I said terrible things.”
“Yes.”
Then:
“I did love you.”
I believed.
“That was never only question.”
He nodded.
Then:
“Why didn’t you tell me about Northstar?”
I almost laughed.
Still.
“I did.”
“No.”
He shook.
“I mean really tell me.”
I looked at him.
“I wanted you to be interested in me without needing a capitalization table.”
He closed eyes.
Then:
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
He took breath.
“For making you smaller in my head so I could feel bigger.”
That was first apology that reached truth.
Then:
“For Camilla.”
“For earrings.”
“For shove.”
“For money.”
Then:
“I’m not asking forgiveness.”
Good.
I answered:
“I forgive some things.”
His eyes opened.
“Not all?”
“I don’t know.”
Fair.
Then he asked:
“Do you hate me?”
“No.”
That surprised him.
Then:
“Do you still love me?”
I looked.
“No.”
It hurt.
But true.
He nodded.
May you like
Then went to serve sentence.
And Aurelia finally entered first full year where Julian Vance was no longer part of any company decision.
