Chapter 15 - Helen’s Version

Helen served just over five years before supervised release.

She was seventy-three.

Unlike Richard, she wrote frequently.

I returned letters.

Then she stopped.

Good.

After release, she requested no contact with June directly.

Surprising.

Her attorney said:

“Mrs. Carter understands June has not requested.”

Behavior.

Then one letter to me after five years.

I read.

Ethan,

I told myself the baby swap was mercy.

She described night.

Grace died.

June/Olivia alive.

Rebecca sedated.

Me shattered outside NICU without knowing Grace already gone.

Helen saw me through window.

She wrote:

“You were crying before anyone told you why. I decided I could prevent the rest.”

That sounded like love.

Then:

“I had no right.”

Good.

She admitted:

“I thought because Olivia’s mother was dead and Blake was her father, she belonged to our family anyway.”

But Megan’s family existed.

And Blake had no established custody.

Then:

“I thought Rebecca would love any baby she believed was hers.”

She did.

That did not justify.

Then:

“I thought you would never know difference.”

There.

Consent erased by predicted happiness.

Then birthday.

“I should have protected June from Blake.”

Why didn't?

“Because every time Blake hurt someone, I saw the frightened child he used to be and not adult he had become.”

Then:

“I stopped seeing children he frightened.”

That was insightful.

Then:

“I do not ask forgiveness.”

I replied months later:

I received your letter.

That was all.

Then June at twenty-two asked to meet Helen.

I was surprised.

“Why?”

“She named me June?”

I paused.

Yes.

After swap, Rebecca and I had chosen name? Actually we likely had already planned baby name June? Wait Grace was biological baby perhaps Rebecca/Ethan intended name June? We introduced Grace later, but initially official child June. Did they plan name June before? Could say Rebecca and Ethan had planned Grace? But they called swapped baby June. Need consistency. In ch7 we named biological daughter Grace after discovery, implying original newborn perhaps unnamed. Rebecca/Ethan named living baby June after stabilizing. Helen did not name. So answer no.

June said:

“Then why meet?”

“Exactly.”

She laughed.

“Because I want to see if she still thinks she saved me.”

Good.

Mediated.

Helen said:

“Hello, June.”

“Hello.”

Then June:

“Do you think you saved me?”

Helen cried immediately.

“No.”

“Did you love me?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know Blake hated looking at me?”

“I knew he struggled.”

“That’s a nice word.”

“Yes.”

“Why keep bringing him around?”

“Because he was my son.”

“I was your granddaughter.”

“Yes.”

Silence.

Then:

“Do you think DNA makes him my father?”

Helen:

“Biologically.”

“Not what I asked.”

“No.”

Good.

Then:

“Is Ethan my father?”

“Yes.”

No hesitation.

Then June:

“Do you want me to forgive?”

“Yes.”

Then Helen corrected:

“But wanting doesn't give me right.”

She had learned.

June nodded.

“I forgive some.”

No hug.

No future promise.

That was all.

Later Helen sent one birthday card per year after June permitted.

On true birthday, not false.

She learned date.

No gifts over $25 because June said.

Helen complied.

Then Helen died at seventy-nine from heart failure.

June attended funeral.

I did too, for June.

Richard sat front.

Blake still incarcerated, allowed no attendance? Could be funeral furlough unlikely. He sent letter.

At funeral, pastor said Helen loved family fiercely.

I almost flinched.

June whispered:

“Too fiercely.”

I smiled.

Then estate.

Helen’s remaining assets included 12% Carter Mechanical shares and personal investments.

Her will sold shares back/company/employee trust at fair value and divided net equally among Ethan and Blake? Again no favoritism. But perhaps she leaves part to June. Could feel like buy. She writes:

40% Ethan, 40% Blake, 20% June? Hmm.

To avoid inheritance as moral resolution, she directed 12% shares sold to employee ownership trust. Personal estate divided equally between sons. June gets family jewelry if she wants. She declines most.

I received money around $480k after taxes? Maybe significant. I considered disclaiming.

Mara said:

“Property is property.”

I accepted and put most into diversified investments/charity? No need.

Inheritance did not restore family.

Richard once threatened I would lose everything.

Years later I inherited because Helen chose different.

It did not feel like victory.

Just accounting.

Then June received Helen’s signet? That's Richard’s. A pearl brooch maybe. She kept nothing except recipe card? Maybe cake recipe. Fine.

Then Richard, widower, requested another meeting.

I said yes eventually.

Not because money.

May you like

Because he was old.

The final years would force us to decide whether consequence and distance had done enough—without pretending they erased Grace, Megan, Rebecca, or June’s stolen first six days.
