Leonard Price was the easiest defendant to hate abstractly.
A hospital administrator.
Paid.
Changed records.
No family love excuse.
Then his statement complicated.
He had been drowning in gambling debt fifteen years earlier.
Richard offered $25,000.
Price told himself the newborn swap was temporary.
He changed wristbands and electronic identifiers.
When Grace died, her chart needed closure.
He reclassified death under Baby Vale temporary record.
He expected Richard’s attorney to “fix legal adoption” later.
It never happened.
Then he realized police were searching for Olivia.
He panicked.
Richard paid additional money.
Price deleted internal alert.
Closed Clara Benson’s complaint.
Then years later Rebecca’s request.
She had submitted formal records inquiry when June was three.
Price intercepted.
He mailed incomplete packet.
That meant Rebecca did suspect.
She simply never received truth.
I wanted him prosecuted forever.
Statutes limited some acts.
He pleaded guilty to felony medical record falsification, obstruction tied to continuing missing-child investigation, and conspiracy.
Sentence:
Four years incarceration, two suspended, probation, fines/restitution.
Effective two.
Some thought too low.
He was seventy-four and cooperated.
No violent role.
I hated.
Then Mercy Ridge civil liability.
The health system had inherited hospital operations.
Their lawyers initially argued Price acted outside scope.
Mara countered institutional failures:
Access controls.
Complaint closure.
Identity mismatches.
Failure to notify parents.
Negotiations.
June was primary victim of identity concealment.
Grace’s estate too.
Rebecca’s estate.
Me.
Anna/Megan estate potentially.
Complex.
We eventually created mediated settlement rather than decade trial.
No enormous number.
After fees, the settlement established:
A protected trust for June’s counseling, education, future healthcare.
Compensation to me for emotional and economic harms.
Separate settlement with Megan’s estate through Anna.
Funding for neonatal identity-safety reforms.
The hospital issued written acknowledgment.
No admission every employee knew.
Clara received apology too.
Then June said:
“Do I get rich?”
“Not rich.”
“How much?”
I gave age appropriate number eventually. Enough for college and support.
“Can I buy Jeep?”
“No.”
“It’s my money.”
“Trust rules.”
She glared.
Normal.
Then Rebecca’s estate.
I reopened? Not legally necessary. Settlement share passed to me/June per estate. I used portion to establish memorial fund for oncology art program in Rebecca’s name.
Not because she was victim only.
She had loved drawing.

Then Grace.
We sought amended vital records.
This was complicated because her death had been registered under Baby Vale.
Court order established identity based on hospital records and DNA/parentage.
A delayed/corrected birth and death record was created:
Grace Rebecca Carter.
Born same date as June believed? Actually June is six days old already, so their birthdays differ! Wait huge issue: Megan’s baby Olivia was 6 days old when hit-and-run, while Ethan/Rebecca baby born that night. If June was swapped, June's official birthday has been false by six days. Critical. Megan gave birth six days before Carter delivery. Thus Olivia's true birth certificate perhaps exists? Was it filed? She delivered at birthing center and recorded as Olivia Mae Vale, father blank. The birth record existed, but child marked missing later. When family/hospital swap, June got new Carter birth certificate. So dual record. We should integrate now.
Court corrected:
Olivia Mae Vale birth record remains as original; child legally identified as June Olivia Carter after adoption/legal parentage process later.
Fake June birth record invalidated/annotated, but not simply delete.
Grace Rebecca Carter delayed birth/death certificate created from actual Carter delivery.
June learned her birthday was six days earlier.
She said:
“I get two?”
I laughed.
“You have one actual birthday.”
“I have celebrated wrong one fifteen years.”
“So?”
“Two.”
We compromised on “birthday week.”
Then Grace’s death certificate.
Cause natural neonatal complications.
A grave?
Her remains had been cremated under Baby Vale municipal/private process. Were ashes available? Likely not after 15 yrs. Records showed communal cremation? We can say hospital contracted crematory, ashes scattered in memorial garden per unclaimed infant policy because identity falsified. No recoverable individual remains.
I visited memorial garden.
June came.
She placed small paper castle.
“Why castle?”
“Mom would like.”
Maybe.
Then she said:
“I’m sorry they used me.”
I turned.
“For Grace?”
“Yes.”
“No.”
“Dad.”
“You were six days old.”
“I know.”
“You did nothing.”
She nodded.
Then:
“I still feel.”
Feelings aren't guilt.
We let it be.
Then legal identity.
Because June was biologically Blake’s and Megan’s, but raised by me under false birth certificate, family court needed establish parentage/guardianship.
Megan deceased.
Blake indicted.
I had acted as father in every way, but fraudulent certificate complicated.
Mara filed for adoption/confirmation.
Blake initially objected through lawyer.
That made me furious.
“You have never parented her.”
His attorney said biological rights.
But paternity had not been legally established before; now DNA.
Court considered best interests and his criminal conduct.
June, sixteen, had voice.
She said:
“I want Ethan Carter as my father.”
The judge looked at Blake’s empty counsel table? He attends by video.
“Do you want contact with Blake?”
“No.”
Blake withdrew objection after one hearing.
Maybe strategy.
Maybe shame.
Then I legally adopted June.
At sixteen.
After raising her since six days old.
The judge said:
“This document does not create your relationship.”
Exactly.
“It recognizes it.”
June cried.
I did too.
Her legal name:
June Olivia Carter.
Father:
Ethan Carter by adoption.
Biological father information retained in sealed/appropriate records.
Megan recognized as biological mother.
Rebecca?
Not legal mother after correction, though she raised June and intended parent. Could posthumous adoption impossible. But June considered Rebecca mother. Records cannot fully hold life.
That hurt.
June said:
“Paper can be wrong in both directions.”
