Chapter 18 - Margaret’s Sentence

Margaret’s sentencing happened while Daniel’s jury deliberated.

I almost skipped.

Then went.

She wore beige.

No silk.

No jewelry except wedding band, though Robert and she were separated.

Her attorney described:

Sixty one years old.

No prior record.

Community ties.

Remorse.

Health issues.

The prosecutor described:

Deliberate placement of obstacle.

Knowledge Claire needed to attend a financial meeting.

Failure to seek medical care.

Continued coercive treatment hours later.

Medical documentation.

Camera evidence.

No claim of attempted murder.

Good.

I gave a victim statement.

“I do not know whether Margaret intended me to break a rib. I know she intended to frighten and stop me. I know after I fell, she saw I was hurt and chose the plan over my health. At five in the morning, she still treated my injury as inconvenient.”

Margaret cried.

I continued:

“The worst part was not the box. It was being taught that my pain did not count if it interfered with what the Mercer family wanted.”

I did not ask judge for maximum.

I asked for enforceable no contact and accountability.

Margaret received a custodial sentence under the plea that included several months in jail, with additional suspended time conditioned on probation, no contact, counseling, and compliance.

Not years.

Not nothing.

She was taken into custody after sentencing.

Before leaving, she looked at me.

No apology.

Fine.

Her remorse belonged to court if it existed.

I did not need it.

That afternoon Daniel’s jury returned.

Guilty on the central fraud conspiracy counts.

Guilty on identity/forged authorization related counts proved.

Guilty on attempted fraudulent loan conduct.

On the domestic assault count tied to the morning shove, guilty.

Some lesser overlapping counts were dismissed or merged.

No verdict on crimes prosecutors did not charge.

Daniel closed his eyes.

I felt nothing.

Then something.

Grief.

Not victory.

Mara sat behind prosecutor.

When courtroom emptied, she approached.

“You okay?”

“No.”

“Good answer.”

I laughed.

“When did everyone start saying that?”

“When people started realizing ‘fine’ is useless.”

Daniel’s sentencing scheduled six weeks later.

Robert’s three weeks after.

Restitution determination later because Northline recoveries still being calculated.

The legal process was not done.

But criminal truth had been established.

Daniel had not been a powerless son manipulated by parents.

He chose.

Then a reporter approached outside.

“Mrs. Mercer, do you believe your husband’s family tried to kill you?”

“No.”

She looked disappointed.

“What do you believe?”

“They stole from my company, forged documents, and used intimidation to keep me from stopping them.”

“Do you think Margaret’s box was part of financial conspiracy?”

“Yes, in the sense she was trying to keep me from the bank. There is no evidence she intended my death.”

“Are you trying to destroy the Mercer family?”

I stared.

“No.”

“What do you want?”

“To go to work.”

May you like

That headline did not get much attention.

Good.
