Chapter 11 - Margaret’s Invoices

Margaret did not know Northline was paying her.

That was what she claimed.

At first I did not believe her.

Then bank records complicated it.

The account named Mercer Family Services had been opened by Robert.

Margaret was listed as sole owner.

Her signature appeared.

She admitted signing bank opening papers.

“What did Robert tell you?”

“That it was for household reimbursements.”

“From whom?”

“Daniel.”

“Did you know Northline was source?”

“No.”

“Did you ask?”

“No.”

Her negligence was enormous.

Her direct fraud knowledge less certain.

Robert transferred money into account and used debit card for:

Margaret’s clothing.

Groceries.

Spa appointments.

Their old apartment debt.

Some household items purchased for my house.

Margaret treated it as money Daniel provided.

Given Daniel was my husband, she may have assumed family money.

That did not make her financial conduct innocent morally.

Legally, prosecutors needed knowledge.

They did not charge her in corporate fraud without stronger evidence.

I hated that for about a day.

Then accepted.

Not every awful person is guilty of every offense around them.

Robert had used Margaret too.

That did not erase what she did to me.

It showed family system more accurately.

Robert kept everyone dependent through money they did not fully understand.

Daniel thought Robert could rescue company.

Margaret thought Daniel funded lifestyle.

Robert thought Northline belonged to the family because I married his son.

And I had spent years paying legitimate bills, making their assumptions easier.

Nora asked:

“Do you regret helping?”

“Yes.”

“Would you have refused every request if you knew future?”

“Yes.”

“Do you regret being generous or failing boundaries?”

I thought.

“Failing boundaries.”

Good.

After protective hearing, Daniel was ordered out of the house for the duration of temporary order.

He moved into a furnished rental.

Margaret stayed with a cousin.

Robert rented an extended stay hotel.

None became homeless.

None had a legal right to remain in my residence after court orders resolved possession.

The house felt enormous.

I slept downstairs because stairs terrified me.

Emily said that was normal.

“Your rib also benefits.”

I started therapy with Dr. Naomi Reed.

First session:

“What do you want?”

“To stop feeling stupid.”

“Why stupid?”

“I let them live with me.”

“You thought family needed help.”

“I paid Daniel’s debts.”

“You believed spouse.”

“I didn’t see fraud.”

“You aren’t forensic accountant?”

“I own company.”

She smiled.

“Owners are allowed to trust systems.”

“Our systems failed.”

“Then fix systems. Don’t turn operational failure into self hatred.”

I did not like her.

I returned next week.

At Northline, we hired independent forensic consultants.

New controls.

No vendor additions based solely on executive family statements.

Dual approval above lower threshold.

Direct callback on changes.

Immediate deactivation of legacy access templates.

Olivia remained controller.

I did not fire her.

She cried when I told her.

“I almost let them destroy you.”

“No.”

“We both missed things.”

“Why are you protecting me?”

“I’m not. You’re on corrective plan.”

She laughed through tears.

Accountability without destruction.

Maybe I was learning.

Then investigators recovered Robert’s laptop from the storage unit.

One spreadsheet had columns:

DANIEL.

MARGARET.

ROBERT.

CLAIRE.

Under each, amounts.

Daniel: 247,600.

Margaret: 54,300.

Robert: 161,900.

Claire: 0.

At bottom:

TOTAL FAMILY BENEFIT.

He had not categorized the money as theft.

May you like

He had categorized me as the only family member who had not received a share.

That was how completely Robert believed Northline had become communal property.
