Chapter 2

For the first time that afternoon, Adrian forgot to smile.

His face remained frozen as the officiant welcomed everyone to the ceremony.

The guests heard beautiful words about love.

Adrian heard only one sentence repeating inside his head.

"I know everything."

He looked into Mara's eyes.

There was no anger.

No tears.

Only absolute certainty.

"What are you talking about?" he whispered.

Mara didn't answer.

Instead, she turned back toward the officiant as though nothing had happened.

From the front row, Celeste watched carefully.

Something was wrong.

She had expected humiliation.

She had expected Mara to cry.

Maybe even run from the ballroom.

Instead, the young woman stood perfectly still, her stained gown illuminated beneath the crystal chandeliers like evidence displayed in a courtroom.

Celeste felt the first flicker of unease.

The officiant smiled warmly.

"We are gathered here today..."

The words faded into the background.

Thomas Bennett remained seated in the front row, his hands resting calmly on his cane.

To everyone else, he looked like a proud father.

Only Mara knew what sat beneath his chair.

His leather briefcase.

Inside were sealed evidence bags.

Photographs.

Time stamps.

The hotel hallway security footage the manager had quietly copied while guests were taking their seats.

Thomas had spent forty years learning one simple lesson.

People who believed they were untouchable almost always made mistakes.

Celeste had made several.

She entered the bridal suite alone.

She left six minutes later.

She carried nothing in.

She carried nothing out.

But the hallway camera captured every second.

Lena quietly slipped into the empty chair beside Thomas.

"The hotel manager emailed everything."

Thomas nodded.

"Good."

"The security system backed it up automatically."

"Even better."

Lena hesitated.

"Shouldn't we stop the ceremony?"

Thomas looked toward his daughter.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because the person responsible still thinks she's winning."

At the altar, Adrian reached for Mara's hand.

She allowed it.

Her fingers were cold.

"Mara."

"Please."

"If this is about my mother..."

She looked at him.

"You still think this is only about your mother."

Adrian frowned.

"What else could it be?"

She said nothing.

That frightened him even more.

The officiant continued speaking.

"Marriage is built on honesty..."

Mara almost smiled.

Honesty.

The irony was almost unbearable.

Three weeks earlier, while finalizing seating arrangements, she had accidentally discovered an invoice emailed to Adrian.

A payment.

Forty-eight thousand dollars.

Made to a private investigator.

At first she assumed it had something to do with business.

Then curiosity made her ask a simple question.

Why would her fiancé hire someone days before their wedding?

She never confronted him.

Instead...

She quietly hired her own investigator.

What she received three days later changed everything.

The investigator hadn't just uncovered financial records.

He uncovered years of secrets.

Offshore accounts.

Hidden property.

Confidential settlements.

And one name that appeared over and over again.

Celeste Vale.

Every questionable transfer eventually led back to Adrian's mother.

But there was something else.

Something even Adrian didn't know.

Thomas had read the report twice before closing the folder.

Then he simply said,

"We're not dealing with a controlling mother."

"We're dealing with someone who's been committing crimes for years."

Mara had barely slept since.

She could have canceled the wedding immediately.

Walked away.

Never looked back.

Instead...

She made one phone call.

To the wedding venue.

"Please don't change anything."

"The ceremony will happen exactly as planned."

Back in the ballroom, the officiant smiled.

"It is now time for the vows."

Adrian finally relaxed a little.

Maybe...

Maybe she had only been trying to frighten him.

Maybe she didn't actually know anything.

He took a steadying breath.

Then reached into his jacket pocket for the folded vows he had written.

As he unfolded the paper...

A small white envelope slipped onto the floor.

He frowned.

He didn't recognize it.

Mara did.

She had placed it there herself before the ceremony.

Adrian picked it up.

No name.

No writing.

Only a sealed envelope.

He looked at Mara.

"What is this?"

She answered softly.

"My wedding gift."

Confused, Adrian opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

His expression changed instantly.

The color drained from his face.

It showed Adrian standing beside a storage unit late at night.

Across from him...

A man carrying a cardboard archive box.

On the side of the box was the logo of the Vale Family Foundation.

Inside that same archive box, according to the investigator's report...

...had been financial records that disappeared forever.

Adrian's hands began shaking.

He looked at Mara.

"Where did you get this?"

She smiled calmly.

"I told you."

"I know everything."

From the front row, Celeste saw Adrian's reaction.

Panic surged through her.

She stood halfway from her chair.

"What is it?"

Adrian couldn't answer.

Because on the back of the photograph...

May you like

Someone had written four simple words.

This is only page one.
