Chapter 1

The first thing Thomas Bennett did wasn't hug his daughter.

He reached into his jacket, pulled out a pair of latex gloves, and quietly said,

"Nobody touches the dress."

The bridal suite fell completely silent.

Mara Bennett stood motionless in the center of the room, still wearing the ivory wedding gown she had dreamed about since she was a little girl.

Or what remained of it.

A thick brown liquid had been poured down the front of the gown, soaking the lace bodice before dripping all the way to the train. The odor filled the room with something so foul that the bridesmaids instinctively stepped backward.

Pinned to the ruined fabric with an antique silver brooch was a folded handwritten note.

Mara had already read it once.

She didn't need to read it again.

The words were burned into her memory.

Know your place.

Her maid of honor, Lena, covered her mouth.

"Oh my God..."

"Who would do something like this?"

No one answered.

Thomas carefully photographed the gown from every angle with his phone before removing a small evidence envelope from his leather briefcase.

He had retired from the Chicago Police Department three years earlier after spending nearly four decades investigating homicides.

Old habits never disappeared.

Neither did good instincts.

Using gloved hands, he removed the brooch without smearing the stain.

Then he slipped both the brooch and the handwritten note into separate evidence bags.

Only then did he look at his daughter.

"Mara."

She met his eyes.

"Do you know who did it?"

She answered immediately.

"Yes."

Thomas wasn't surprised.

"Celeste."

Mara nodded once.

Celeste Vale.

Her future mother-in-law.

For nearly two years, Celeste had made it painfully clear that Mara would never be good enough for her son.

The comments always sounded polite in public.

"You have such... simple taste."

"Adrian has always dated women from more established families."

"You'll learn how things are done."

Every insult came wrapped in a smile.

Every humiliation was subtle enough that Adrian always dismissed it.

"That's just how Mom talks."

"She doesn't mean anything by it."

Mara wanted to believe him.

So she stayed quiet.

When Celeste criticized the engagement ring because it wasn't expensive enough.

Mara stayed quiet.

When Celeste replaced the florist Mara had chosen without asking.

She stayed quiet.

When Celeste removed Mara's late mother's favorite song from the ceremony because it was "too depressing."

She stayed quiet.

She told herself peace was worth compromise.

Until today.

Thomas sealed the final evidence bag.

"Did anyone else enter this room?"

Lena nodded.

"The hotel manager."

"The makeup artist."

"Two bridesmaids."

"They all saw the dress before we called you."

Thomas smiled faintly.

"Good."

"What?"

"We have witnesses."

Lena stared at him.

"You think this could become a police case?"

Thomas looked at the stained gown.

"I don't know yet."

"But I know one thing."

He zipped the evidence bag into his briefcase.

"Someone spent a great deal of effort making sure this happened."

Mara walked to the full-length mirror.

The gown was ruined.

Completely ruined.

She could change into the backup dress.

Every bride kept one for emergencies.

Lena stepped closer.

"I'll get the other dress."

"No."

Lena frowned.

"What?"

"I'm wearing this one."

Silence.

"Mara..."

"No."

She turned calmly toward her father.

"I'm done hiding other people's cruelty."

Thomas watched his daughter carefully.

Her eyes were dry.

No screaming.

No panic.

No tears.

Only absolute calm.

He recognized that expression.

He had seen it on witnesses moments before they finally decided to tell the truth.

"Are you sure?"

She nodded.

"If Celeste wanted everyone to see what she did..."

"Then everyone will."

Meanwhile, downstairs in the Grand Imperial Hotel ballroom, guests admired enormous crystal chandeliers hanging above hundreds of white roses.

Soft piano music filled the room.

Adrian Vale adjusted his tuxedo in front of a mirror.

His best man laughed.

"Nervous?"

Adrian smiled.

"A little."

His phone buzzed.

A message from his mother.

Everything is under control.

He smiled without thinking.

Typical Mom.

Always making sure every detail was perfect.

He slipped the phone back into his pocket.

Across the ballroom, Celeste welcomed guests with effortless elegance.

Designer gown.

Diamond earrings.

Perfect hair.

Perfect smile.

She accepted compliments as though she personally deserved credit for the wedding.

One guest leaned toward another.

"She looks happier than the bride."

Celeste heard the comment.

She smiled even wider.

Exactly then...

The ballroom doors opened.

Every conversation stopped.

Two hundred guests turned toward the entrance.

Thomas Bennett stepped inside first.

His posture was straight.

His expression unreadable.

Then Mara appeared on his arm.

A collective gasp echoed through the ballroom.

The beautiful ivory wedding gown...

Was covered in dark brown stains from neckline to hem.

Guests froze in disbelief.

Several people instinctively stood.

Phones slowly rose into the air.

No one could understand why a bride would walk down the aisle dressed like that.

At the altar, Adrian's smile vanished.

His eyes widened in horror.

"What..."

"...what happened?"

Behind him, Celeste's lips curled into the faintest smile.

For just one second...

She believed her plan had worked.

Mara continued walking toward the altar without lowering her head once.

She never looked at the ruined dress.

She never acknowledged the whispers surrounding her.

Only when she reached Adrian did she finally stop.

He leaned toward her, forcing a smile for the guests.

Then whispered through clenched teeth,

"You're humiliating this family."

Mara slowly turned her head.

Her expression never changed.

She smiled almost imperceptibly.

Then whispered back,

"Your mother forgot one thing."

May you like

A pause.

"I know everything."
