Chapter 22 - The Aurelia VII Leaves

The Aurelia VII was sold to a European charter company.

Before handover, family office invited us for final walkthrough because personal property and evidence archives needed removal.

I almost declined.

Then said yes.

Nathan came.

Miles too, now with new employer but invited.

Captain Monroe returned as guest.

The yacht looked exactly as it had that night.

That was strange.

Teak does not remember.

Railings do not feel guilt.

The deck had been polished.

No mark where Veronica stood.

I walked to upper railing.

Nathan stayed several feet away.

“Okay?”

“Yes.”

Ocean calm.

Daylight.

No party.

No red dress.

No spotlight.

I put hand on metal.

Cold.

Then looked down.

“Far.”

“Yes.”

“How did I survive?”

“Jack.”

“And dress didn’t kill me.”

“And you surfaced quickly.”

“Luck.”

“Yes.”

That word.

Not destiny.

Not cosmic justice.

Luck.

I could have died.

Nothing about later convictions would change that.

I stayed five minutes.

Then walked away.

Before leaving, Miles handed me small envelope.

“What?”

“From Captain.”

Inside was copy of incident log.

Not secret.

Official.

Time 9:12 p.m.:

PERSON OVERBOARD — ELENA CARTER.

Time 9:13:

RESCUE DEPLOYED.

Time 9:17:

SUBJECT RECOVERED CONSCIOUS.

Simple.

I cried.

Not because dramatic.

Because bureaucratic language can make survival real.

The yacht left California two weeks later.

I watched no departure video.

No need.
