Chapter 21 - Veronica Comes Home

Veronica was released from custody after serving her sentence and satisfying conditions for supervised release.
I learned through victim notification.
I did not panic.
That surprised me.
Her no-contact condition remained.
She moved to Santa Barbara near sister.
No boards.
No patron committees.
Her former social network mostly vanished.
She worked remotely for a small design consultancy after completing programs in custody.
I did not need to know more.
Then she asked, through attorney, whether I would permit a restorative justice letter.
Not meeting.
Letter.
I said yes.
The new letter was shorter.
I am out.
I understand that is information you may not want. I will not contact you again after this.
Then:
The worst thing I believed that night was not that you were poor. It was that status decided whose dignity mattered. Prison did not teach me that. The video did. Watching myself after the fact did.
I stopped.
That was enough.
She wrote:
I hope you are well. I will stay away.
I filed letter.
No response.
Forgiveness?
Not necessary.
Fear?
Mostly gone.
Boundary?
Clear.
That was closure.
Adrian remained in federal custody longer.
Colin too.
Nathan never visited Colin.
Never wrote.
He once checked release date.
Then closed browser.
