Chapter 13 - ANNA WAS NOT THE TARGET

Pike’s proffer began with one correction.
“I did not sabotage the truck.”
Did he sign maintenance release?
“Yes.”
Why?
Sentinel required security manager approval for vehicle assigned to sensitive route.
What route?
The truck was supposed to transport sealed Gray evidence the next morning.
Not ordinary freight.
Vehicle had been reserved for a transfer from Gray headquarters to a federal archive.
Cargo:
Mirror server hardware.
My old case.
Why then was it on public road that night?
Driver Michael Dean was repositioning truck after maintenance.
Steering failed.
It crossed into Anna.
Pike claimed sabotage targeted the truck before it carried Mirror.
Anna happened to be oncoming vehicle.
If true, Anna was collateral.
Not intended target.
Who sabotaged?
Pike blamed Nolan Price.
Evidence?
Nolan ordered maintenance exception.
Pike approved truck without physical inspection.
That made Pike culpable for negligence.
Maybe worse.
But no proof he knew sabotage.
Why did Aster pay Pike after?
To keep quiet about evidence transfer plan.
He accepted.
Seventy five thousand.
That made him compromised.
Then he joined Nolan’s private company.
He said guilt trapped him.
Convenient.
Maybe partly true.
What was target?
Mirror.
Someone wanted destroy or intercept hardware before archive transfer.
Why?
It contained beneficiary ledger and illegal outside payment records.
Anna had copied index.
But the full Mirror would expose everyone.
Then why did truck not carry Mirror yet?
Saboteur may have expected it did.
Schedule changed at last minute.
Who changed?
Rebecca.
Her name on order.
She moved transfer to next day due security issue.
She may have saved Mirror accidentally.
And caused truck to travel empty at night.
No one could know Anna would be there unless tracking her.
So crash likely not targeted at her.
That relieved nothing.
But truth changed.
I had spent nineteen years imagining my work killed Anna.
My work may have created conditions around the truck.
But she was not deliberately hunted.
At least current evidence.
Then Pike explained Phase Two.
After Nolan died, Pike inherited root key.
He discovered Mirror still existed in distributed fragments.
He wanted recover it before Voss or federal authorities.
Why wait?
Needed Node 7.
Me.
He knew Lily’s hidden trust and Hawthorne scholarship could bring her into reach.
Did he create scholarship?
“No.”
“Nolan did.”
“Why Anna’s name?”
“Guilt.”
Nolan used Anna’s stake distributions to fund Lily.
He called it taking care of Ghost’s daughter.
Without telling Ghost.
Perversely sentimental.
Then why assault Lily?
Pike needed activation.
He could not simply ask me.
I would refuse and alert authorities.
He used Meridian students.
He claimed:
“No permanent injury.”
I wanted to cross room.
Rebecca saw.
I remained seated.
“You put my daughter in a room with Ethan Cole.”
Pike looked down.
“I underestimated him.”
That sentence almost broke restraint.
Underestimated.
As if Lily’s shattered jaw were a modeling error.
He continued.
Tyler was cooperative contact.
Brandon muscle.
Ethan emotional trigger.
Pike expected intimidation.
Ethan punched.
Then lost control.
Pike arrived and stopped worst of it.
Lily’s injuries already severe.
He moved footage to preserve leverage and protect operation.
He said families later pressured witnesses independently.
So cover up had multiple actors.
Pike manipulated event.
Ethan committed violence.
Families used influence afterward.
No single button.
Then:
“What did you expect me to do after activation?”
“Call Rebecca.”
“Why?”
“Because Node 7 routing would expose whether her recovery certificate still worked.”
“So Rebecca was test too.”
“Yes.”
“Did it?”
“Yes.”
Pike used her old cloned certificate to route ping.
His goal:
Combine Nolan root key.
Voss oversight escrow.
Rebecca recovery handshake.
My Node 7.
Four fragments.
He needed Voss too.
Why was Voss at hospital?
Pike lured him with message saying Lily possessed Anna files.
Voss came.
His office then free for Pike.
Everything engineered.
Pike reconstructed Mirror partially before arrest.
Where is it?
He smiled.
Not full.
He had copied one section to unknown location.
“What section?”
“Payment ledger.”
“Why?”
“Insurance.”
“For what?”
“Because people on that ledger still run things.”
Names?
Pike refused without deal.
Federal prosecutors would negotiate.
Not my choice.
Then Rebecca received Mirror fragment from recovered hardware.
One page.
Payments.
Aster to Nolan.
Aster to Pike.
Foundations.
Politicians.
Contractors.
Then one line:
GHOST RETIREMENT CONTINGENCY.
Recipient:
Daniel Walker Security LLC.
My company.
Amount:
$250,000.
Date:
Nineteen years ago.
I stared.
My small business startup loan.
I thought it came from a veteran enterprise fund.
Apparently money originated from Aster.
May you like
They had financed my normal life too.
Continue to the next part: Daniel discovers the business he built after leaving Gray may have been secretly funded by the same network he thought he escaped.
