Chapter 11 - BEFORE THE FIRST PUNCH

Lily remembered after nearly an hour.
Trauma does not replay like video.
Fragments come when they come.
She wrote:
YOUR DAD LEFT US ONCE.
I stared.
Ethan had said that?
She nodded.
Then:
HE’LL COME BACK FOR YOU.
“What did you think it meant?”
NOTHING.
“Did Ethan say who us was?”
She shook her head.
Then another fragment:
COLE MEN DON’T FORGET.
Warren Cole.
Ethan’s father.
Was Warren connected to old Lantern?
Yes.
Cole Systems predecessor had government contracts.
But nineteen years ago Warren was only thirty, working under his father, Arthur Cole.
Arthur sat on Aster Civic Foundation board.
Dead now.
Maybe Ethan inherited family stories.
Rebecca interviewed Ethan with attorney.
He initially denied.
Then federal evidence made denial harder.
He admitted his father told him Daniel Walker “destroyed families.”
Why?
Old Lantern investigation damaged Cole Systems contract.
No criminal conviction.
Government suspended one division.
Arthur Cole lost hundreds of millions.
Warren blamed Gray.
Ethan grew up hearing:
Ghost came after us.
So when Meridian told Ethan Lily was Daniel’s daughter, resentment became personal.
Pike exploited it.
Ethan thought this was revenge plus retrieval.
Not broader Ghost activation?
He knew enough.
Pike said:
“Push her until Walker wakes up.”
Ethan liked the idea.
Brandon knew less.
Tyler knew card.
The assault was not accidental.
Ethan chose violence beyond plan.
He wanted to punish me through Lily.
I had never met him.
That was how inherited grievance works.
He hated a story about me.
Then Ethan said something unexpected.
“My dad told me not to touch her.”
Warren Cole had warned him?
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Day before party.”
“Why?”
“He said whatever Meridian was doing had gotten out of control.”
That suggested Warren knew some operation.
His attorneys arranged interview.
Warren Cole entered like someone accustomed to buying time.
He did not deny Aster history.
His father helped fund continuity program.
Warren called it:
“Relationship preservation.”
Of course.
He said after Gray investigations, major philanthropic families feared future regulators would treat them as permanent enemies.
So they funded scholarships and institutions connected to officials’ families to rebuild relationships.
That sounds unethical.
Sometimes perhaps legal.
But tracking children secretly crossed lines.
Warren claimed he stopped supporting program ten years ago.
Financial records?
His company still hosted server unknowingly after merger.
Possible.
Then why tell Ethan Daniel destroyed families?
“Because I was angry.”
“Why warn him away from Lily?”
“Because Voss contacted me.”
Voss?
Three days before attack, Malcolm Voss called Warren.
Said Meridian students were being manipulated by Aaron Pike.
Warren warned Ethan.
Ethan ignored.
That made Voss look more like ally.
Why not alert me?
“He didn’t know how.”
Weak.
Why not law enforcement?
“He said Pike had federal contacts.”
Then Warren said:
“Pike told me Daniel Walker was the reason Anna died.”
My heart stopped.
“What?”
“Years ago.”
“Explain.”
Pike claimed I refused to close Lantern when threats emerged.
Anna became collateral.
Not that I caused crash directly.
But my decision exposed her.
That was close enough to guilt I already carried.
Pike weaponized it.
Why?
To keep old families angry at Ghost.
Then Warren admitted another fact.
Nolan Price and Aaron Pike ran a private security company after Gray dissolved.
Name:
Meridian Continuity Services.
Seed funding:
Aster.
They sold risk intelligence to wealthy families.
Using knowledge from Gray.
Government methods privatized.
That was the true continuation.
Not merely bribery.
An intelligence network built from stolen investigative infrastructure.
Hawthorne became headquarters because donor families funded it.
Malcolm Voss joined university partly to monitor them.
He may have been trapped inside.
Then Rebecca found company records.
Meridian Continuity had one silent partner:
Anna Walker Trust.
My throat closed.
Again my wife’s name.
Not her actual trust?
Maybe created after death.
Share:
Ten percent.
Dividends paid for nineteen years.
Where did money go?
Lily’s scholarship trust.
Somebody put Anna’s name into the company that exploited her death.
Why?
Maybe compensation.
Maybe guilt.
Maybe laundering.
Then Pike’s email included an attachment.
Old partnership agreement.
Meridian Continuity Services.
Founders:
Nolan Price.
Aaron Pike.
Malcolm Voss.
And one fourth founder.
Signature hidden under redaction.
Rebecca removed digital layer.
Name:
Anna Walker.
May you like
My wife had signed.
Continue to the next part: A recovered partnership agreement appears to show Anna helped create Meridian Continuity before her death.
