Chapter 4

Hannah read the message from Attorney Williams again.
"The reason Evelyn hated your father was because he knew the truth about her."
For several seconds, she didn't move.
She had expected many things.
A legal battle.
An apology.
Maybe even an attempt from Cole to manipulate her into returning.
But she never expected that her marriage was connected to something that happened decades earlier.
Something involving her own father.
She immediately called him.
"Dad."
Grant answered after the first ring.
"Hannah."
His voice changed when he heard hers.
"What happened?"
She hesitated.
"Attorney Williams said Evelyn has a secret."
Silence.
Not confusion.
Not surprise.
Silence.
The kind that told her he already knew.
"Dad?"
Grant took a slow breath.
"There are things I should have told you."
Hannah closed her eyes.
That sentence had become too familiar.
Everyone had secrets.
Everyone had reasons.
Everyone had explanations.
But she was tired of discovering the truth after being hurt.
"What kind of things?"

Grant's voice became quieter.
"About Evelyn Whitman."
Twenty-five years earlier.
Before Hannah was born.
Before the Whitman family became wealthy.
Before Cole inherited his father's confidence.
Evelyn Whitman had been married to a different man.
A businessman named Thomas Whitman.
Thomas was ambitious.
Powerful.
And obsessed with reputation.
Grant had worked with him.
At the time, Grant was just beginning to build Mercer Global Holdings.
He was young.
Focused.
And he trusted people too easily.
Thomas introduced him to Evelyn during a business event.
She was charming.
Intelligent.
Beautiful.
But Grant noticed something.
She always knew how to manipulate a room.
She knew exactly what people wanted to hear.
Years later, Grant discovered that Thomas's company was involved in financial fraud.
Millions of dollars had disappeared.
Investors were losing everything.
When Grant discovered the truth...
He reported it.
Thomas went to prison.
The company collapsed.
And Evelyn never forgave him.
Because in her mind...
Grant had destroyed her perfect life.
"But what does that have to do with Hannah?"
Grant was quiet.
"Thomas had a son."
Hannah felt a chill.
"Cole."
"Yes."
The room suddenly felt smaller.
Grant continued.
"Cole grew up believing his father was betrayed."
"By you?"
"Yes."
Hannah sat down.
"So Evelyn raised him to hate you."
Grant didn't answer.
But he didn't need to.
She understood.
All those years.
All those comments.
All those subtle insults about her family.
They weren't random.
They were intentional.
That evening, Hannah met with Grant and Attorney Williams.
The documents were spread across the table.
Old financial records.
Court documents.
Letters.
Evidence.
Everything connecting Evelyn to the past.
Williams pointed to a file.
"This is the important part."
Hannah looked closer.
"What is it?"
"A letter."
"From who?"
"Thomas Whitman."
She opened it carefully.
The letter was old.
The handwriting was faded.
But the words were clear.
Thomas admitted he had committed the fraud alone.
He admitted Grant had no involvement.
He admitted Evelyn knew nothing.
At first.
But later...
She helped hide information.
Hannah looked up.
"She knew?"
Williams nodded.
"Yes."
Grant looked disappointed.
Not angry.
Disappointed.
"She blamed me for exposing the truth."
A pause.
"But she spent years protecting the person responsible."
Hannah looked at the documents.
And suddenly everything made sense.
Evelyn had built her entire life around one belief.
That she was the victim.
And anyone who challenged that belief became the enemy.
Meanwhile, Cole discovered the truth too.
Evelyn had hidden the letter from him his entire life.
When he confronted her, she immediately became defensive.
"You don't understand."
Cole stared at her.
"No."
His voice was broken.
"I don't."
She walked toward him.
"I protected you."
"No."
He shook his head.
"You protected yourself."
The words shocked her.
Because they sounded exactly like something Hannah would say.
Cole continued.
"You made me believe Hannah's family destroyed ours."
Evelyn looked away.
"They did."
"No."
He looked at her.
"They didn't."
Silence.
"You did."
For the first time, Evelyn looked afraid.
Because her son was finally seeing her clearly.
The following week, the legal hearing began.
The room was filled with tension.
Cole sat beside his attorney.
Evelyn sat behind him.
Hannah sat across from them.
Calm.
Focused.
Different.
The woman who entered the Whitman house weeks ago had been exhausted and afraid.
This woman was someone else.
Someone who had survived.
The judge reviewed the evidence.
Medical records.
Financial documents.
Security footage.
Messages.
Everything.
Then the final evidence was presented.
The recording from the kitchen.
Cole's voice.
Evelyn's voice.
Hannah asking for help.
And Cole throwing her phone.
The room became silent.
Cole lowered his head.
Because there was no explanation left.
No excuse.
No way to pretend.
After the hearing, Cole approached Hannah.
Security watched carefully.
But Hannah didn't move.
"I want to say something."
She looked at him.
"Okay."
His voice shook.
"I was wrong."
A pause.
"I don't know if that matters anymore."
Hannah remained silent.
Cole looked at her.
"I thought I was protecting my family."
She shook her head.
"No."
A pause.
"You were protecting your pride."
He looked down.
Because he knew.
"I loved you."
Hannah nodded slowly.
"I believe you did."
Cole looked surprised.
"But love isn't enough."
Her voice softened.
"Not when someone has to be afraid."
Those words stayed with him.
Because they were the truth.
Months passed.
Hannah's divorce was finalized.
Her pregnancy continued safely.
She moved into a quiet home near her father's property.
A place where she could finally breathe.
She returned to the hospital.
But this time...
She wasn't the exhausted woman hiding pain behind a smile.
She was someone who understood her own worth.
Her coworkers noticed.
"You seem different."
Hannah smiled.
"I am."
One evening, Grant visited.
He brought a small box.
"What is it?"
He handed it to her.
Inside was an old photo.
Hannah as a child.
Sitting on his shoulders.
She smiled.
"I remember this."
Grant nodded.
"You were always stubborn."
She laughed softly.
"Like you?"
He smiled.
"Exactly like me."
A quiet moment passed.
Then Grant said:
"I'm proud of you."
Hannah looked at him.
"Even though I stayed too long?"
His expression became serious.
"Especially because you found your way out."
Just when Hannah believed everything was finally over...
Attorney Williams called.
His voice sounded concerned.
"Hannah."
She immediately knew something was wrong.
"What happened?"
"We found another account."
"What account?"
A pause.
"An offshore account."
Her heart sank.
"Whose?"
The attorney hesitated.
Then answered:
"Cole's."
Hannah frowned.
"How much?"
The answer made her go silent.
"Millions."
She stood frozen.
Because the money wasn't just from the company.
It wasn't just from hidden transfers.
It was connected to something much bigger.
Something that could change everything they knew.
And the name attached to the account...
May you like
Was not Cole Whitman.
It was Hannah's.
