Chapter 1

The sound of the plate hitting the kitchen floor was the moment Hannah Mercer stopped recognizing the man she married.
The expensive porcelain shattered across the marble tiles.
The dinner she had spent two hours preparing scattered everywhere.
And for a few seconds...
Nobody moved.
Not Cole.
Not Evelyn.
Not even Hannah.
She remained on the floor, one hand pressed against her stomach, the other shaking beside the broken pieces of the plate.
Ten weeks pregnant.
Exhausted after a twelve-hour hospital shift.
And still somehow...
She was the person everyone expected to serve.
Cole Whitman stood above her.
His face showed no concern.
No fear.
No regret.
Only irritation.
"Look what you did."
Hannah looked up at him.
The words almost didn't make sense.
Her body was trembling.
Not from the fall.
From realizing that the man standing in front of her was not worried about whether she was hurt.
He was worried about the broken plate.
"Cole..."
Her voice cracked.
"I'm bleeding."
For the first time, his expression changed slightly.
But not with fear.
With annoyance.
"You're always dramatic."

The sentence hurt more than the fall.
Because she had heard versions of it before.
When she was tired.
When she was sick.
When she needed help.
Every time, Cole found a way to make her feel like needing anything was a burden.
From the hallway, Evelyn watched.
The woman who had spent years criticizing Hannah's cooking, clothing, career, and personality.
She simply adjusted her pearl earrings.
"Honestly, Hannah."
Her voice was cold.
"Everything becomes a crisis with you."
Hannah stared at her.
The woman who was supposed to be family.
The woman who had smiled at their wedding.
The woman who once held her hand and said she was happy her son found such a kind wife.
That woman was gone.
Or maybe...
She had never existed.
Three hours earlier, Hannah had been standing in a hospital emergency room.
A newborn baby was crying.
A young mother was crying harder.
And Hannah was holding both of their hands.
"You did great."
She whispered.
The mother smiled through tears.
"Thank you."
That was why Hannah became a nurse.
Because she believed people deserved kindness when they were scared.
Especially during their most vulnerable moments.
She never imagined she would need that same kindness from the person waiting at home.
But when her shift ended, she received seven missed calls from Cole.
No messages.
Just calls.
She knew what that meant.
He was angry.
Again.
She drove home through heavy rain.
Her back hurt.
Her feet were swollen.
She placed one hand over her stomach the entire drive.
Thinking about the future.
The baby.
The family they were supposed to become.
She walked through the front door expecting an argument.
She never expected what happened next.
After the fall, Hannah slowly tried to stand.
Cole watched.
"You ruined dinner."
She looked at him.
Slowly.
Carefully.
"That's what you're worried about?"
He didn't answer.
Because the answer was obvious.
Evelyn walked toward the kitchen counter.
"Your son has been waiting all night."
Hannah stared.
"My son?"
Evelyn smiled slightly.
"Don't twist my words."
That was what Evelyn always did.
She said something cruel.
Then acted offended when someone noticed.
Hannah grabbed the edge of the counter and pushed herself up.
Her legs were shaking.
"I need a doctor."
Cole rolled his eyes.
"You work in a hospital."
"So you know what this means."
She looked at him.
"Call 911."
A moment passed.
The room became silent.
Cole looked at Evelyn.
Then back at Hannah.
And something inside Hannah broke.
Because she saw it.
The decision.
They were not confused.
They were not scared.
They were choosing.
Cole sighed.
"You are seriously doing this now?"
Hannah's eyes widened.
"Doing what?"
"Trying to make me look bad."
The words were unbelievable.
"I'm pregnant."
"And I'm tired of your excuses."
Her phone was on the floor near her purse.
Hannah reached toward it.
Her fingers barely touched the edge.
Then Cole moved.
Fast.
He picked it up.
For one second, she thought he was going to help.
Then he threw it.
The phone hit the cabinet.
Slid across the floor.
And disappeared under the kitchen table.
The sound was small.
But the meaning was enormous.
Hannah looked at him.
Really looked at him.
And something changed.
The fear disappeared.
Not because she wasn't afraid.
Because she finally understood.
This wasn't a bad night.
This wasn't an argument.
This was who he was.
And she had spent years making excuses for him.
Her voice became quiet.
Almost calm.
"Call my father."
Cole laughed.
Actually laughed.
"Your father?"
He shook his head.
"Hannah, you really think your father is going to come save you?"
Evelyn smiled.
"Your little family connections don't matter here."
Hannah looked at both of them.
They had no idea.
That was the part that almost made her sad.
They had no idea who they had just challenged.
Grant Mercer was not a man people ignored.
He was the founder of Mercer Global Holdings.
A businessman whose name appeared on buildings, financial reports, and international contracts.
But to Hannah...
He was just Dad.
The man who taught her how to stand up for herself.
The man who told her:
"Never stay somewhere that makes you afraid to speak."
She hadn't listened.
Not until tonight.
Cole walked toward the living room.
"She's probably going to call and create a scene."
Evelyn poured herself a glass of wine.
"Let her."
They were calm.
Too calm.
They believed they had complete control.
They believed Hannah was isolated.
They believed she was too tired, too emotional, too afraid to fight back.
Then Cole's phone rang.
The sound cut through the house.
He looked at the screen.
At first, he smiled.
Because he expected another complaint.
Another argument.
Another person he could dismiss.
Then he saw the name.
Grant Mercer.
His smile disappeared.
Evelyn noticed.
"What?"
Cole didn't answer.
She walked closer.
Then she saw it.
The name.
The one that changed everything.
Her face lost all color.
"No."
Cole looked at her.
"What?"
Her voice dropped to a whisper.
"Don't answer that."
For the first time that night...
Cole looked uncertain.
"Why?"
Evelyn stared at the phone.
Because she knew exactly who Grant Mercer was.
And she knew something Cole didn't.
Hannah Mercer wasn't a powerless woman begging for help.
She was the daughter of the man who could destroy their entire world.
The phone continued ringing.
Hannah sat silently on the kitchen floor.
Watching.
Waiting.
May you like
And for the first time...
Cole and Evelyn were the ones who looked afraid.
