Chapter 6 - THE SECOND ATTEMPT TO SILENCE DR. BELL
Detective Brooks called Dr. Bell’s hospital unit before the video ended.
No one answered.
Security reached his room in less than ninety seconds.
The masked person had vanished through a service corridor.
Dr. Bell remained alive.
A needle mark appeared near his intravenous line, but the attacker had not delivered the full dose.
The syringe recovered beneath the bed contained concentrated potassium.
Enough could have stopped his heart within minutes.
The hospital transferred Bell to another facility under an alias known only to a federal magistrate and three investigators.
No digital medical order identified his location.
Graham’s reach depended on systems.
For the first time, investigators removed the systems he understood.
The sealed tablet used to contact Lily came from Vale Children’s Recovery Institute.
Its network logs revealed a hidden communication server.
Detective Brooks obtained a federal warrant.
Technicians recovered video conferences between Graham, Dr. Shaw, Judge Mercer, Diane Mercer, and several Vale Meridian executives.
The recordings showed how the abuse case had been built.
Diane created false child protection reports.
Judge Mercer issued emergency orders.
Shaw prescribed medication and psychiatric labels.
Graham controlled insurance records.
Karen Holt staged the bedrail fracture.
The purpose was not only to take Lily.
It was to complete the Glasswing sale.
A pharmaceutical corporation called Novaxis had agreed to purchase the treatment patent for six hundred million dollars.
The sale required proof that the original child data remained valid.
Lily was the final identifiable patient connected to the earliest trial.
If Graham gained custody, he could place her inside Vale Institute, administer a new treatment, and claim her present fractures resulted from my neglect rather than falsified research.
Novaxis would receive a clean file.
Graham would receive enough money to cover his debts and escape earlier fraud investigations.
Daniel’s archive destroyed that possibility.
Unless Graham could discredit me, Lily, and Dr. Bell.
Sandra reviewed every child protection file connected to Vale Institute.
Twelve children had been removed from parents after unexplained fractures.
Eight carried diagnoses that later disappeared from accessible medical records.
Five were placed inside Vale residential programs.
Two had died from treatment complications described as natural progression of disease.
The youngest was six.
“What happened to the surviving children?” I asked.
“Three remain at Vale Institute.”
“Can you remove them?”
“We need medical cause and court authority.”
“You have evidence.”
“Judge Mercer still controls the regional placement orders.”
Detective Brooks contacted the state attorney general.
Before a replacement judge could act, Vale Institute reported an emergency evacuation.
A supposed electrical fire required immediate transport of every patient.
Security cameras showed buses leaving the property before fire crews arrived.
No smoke appeared anywhere.
Graham was moving the children.
Lily’s name appeared on one transport manifest despite being inside our hospital.
The false entry would allow Graham to claim she had already been transferred lawfully.
Another team could then remove her using matching paperwork.
Dr. Reid placed Lily’s floor under lockdown.
Every staff badge was verified manually.
Sandra stood beside the door.
“I helped carry reports that put children in those buses.”
“You did not know,” I said.
“I chose not to know enough.”
She did not ask me to comfort her.
Instead, she called every family affected by the false records and told them the investigation had changed.
Several parents began driving toward the hospital.
One mother, Angela Morris, carried copies of her son’s diagnosis that Graham failed to erase.
She had kept the documents inside a kitchen recipe book.
Her eleven year old son, Caleb, had been removed after a fracture during physical therapy.
Vale Institute told the court she caused it.
Caleb appeared on the evacuation bus manifest.
The buses vanished from highway cameras near an abandoned industrial research campus owned by Novaxis.
The sale had not been completed, yet the company already controlled a facility prepared to receive the children.
Federal agents surrounded the campus.
Graham contacted Detective Brooks.
“Stop the entry.”
“Release the children.”
“They are receiving medical care.”
“You moved them under false names.”
“Because their parents are dangerous.”
“You erased their diagnoses.”
“To protect confidential research.”
Brooks looked toward me.
“Where is Caleb Morris?”
Graham remained silent.
A child’s voice sounded faintly behind him.
“Mom?”
Angela heard it through the speaker.
She began crying.
Graham continued.
“You are allowing frightened parents to interfere with medicine they cannot understand.”
Dr. Reid moved toward the phone.
“Open the patient records.”
“You are not qualified to review Glasswing.”
“I am qualified to recognize children being used as evidence.”
The call ended.
Federal agents breached the campus.
They found the buses empty.
Inside the central laboratory, medical beds had been prepared for nine children.
One camera remained active.
The live feed showed Graham entering another building with Caleb and two other patients.
Lily looked at the screen.
“That is Meadowbrook.”
The pediatric therapy center where her original diagnosis had been made.
