Chapter 7 - The Bride Removed from the Album

Technicians traced the feed to an old coastal care property owned by a Whitmore charitable trust.
The facility had closed publicly twelve years earlier.
Utility bills continued through a shell company.
A private road connected it to the sea wall north of Whitmore Hall.
Police units left the estate immediately.
Lenora requested an attorney and stopped answering questions.
The board members did not receive the same protection from silence.
Melissa Ward ordered the archive copied under independent supervision.
Charles Denton called an emergency board session inside the conservatory.
Arthur Sloane objected.
“My daughter is being treated like a criminal while the bride weaponizes private footage.”
Melissa looked at Camille.
“Your daughter admitted participating in a plan to institutionalize a shareholder after a forced property transfer.”
“She was manipulated by Graham.”
Camille turned toward her father.
“You knew.”
Arthur’s face hardened.
“I knew Graham intended to separate from Evelyn after the merger.”
“You funded my apartment.”
“To prevent scandal.”
“You told me the child would make everything complicated.”
He said nothing.
Another part of the plan surfaced.
Camille was not only Graham’s mistress.
She was the daughter of the investor who would finance the resort once Mercer restrictions disappeared.
A marriage between Graham and Camille after Evelyn’s removal would combine the Whitmore and Sloane interests.
Evelyn had been the bridge.
The pregnancy had been the lock.
Lenora attempted to create a family structure where every necessary asset remained controlled by people loyal to her.
Rebecca searched the old wedding photographs stored inside the archive.
Lydia appeared in several.
She wore a simple ivory gown and stood beside Lenora’s late brother, Stephen Whitmore.
In one photograph, Lydia held a folder against her stomach.
She had been pregnant.
The next family album contained no image of her, Stephen, or the child.
Public records said Stephen died in a sailing accident shortly after the wedding.
Lydia disappeared before giving birth.
No birth certificate existed under the Whitmore name.
The continuity trust transferred Stephen’s shares to Lenora as family guardian.
If Lydia’s child survived, that transfer may have been unlawful.
Graham’s current voting power could have been built from property belonging to a hidden cousin.
Charles Denton looked at the board records.
“We may not know who legally controls the company.”
Graham stepped forward.
“My father’s side transferred the shares to my mother.”
“Your mother transferred them to you under a guardianship that may have been fraudulent.”
“I built the company.”
“You managed assets whose ownership was never honestly disclosed.”
The same argument Graham used against Evelyn now returned to him.
Work did not erase the source of ownership.
Lenora left the conservatory under police escort.
As she passed Evelyn, she stopped.
“You think Lydia will thank you?”
“I think she should be allowed to speak.”
“She will destroy every person connected to this family.”
“That is not the same as being wrong.”
Lenora lowered her voice.
“She will tell you something about your father that you cannot survive.”
Evelyn held her gaze.
“You already used his death to frighten me.”
“Daniel Mercer did not merely find the archive.”
“What did he do?”
Lenora smiled faintly.
“He helped build the room that kept Lydia alive.”
Police moved her forward before she explained.
Evelyn turned toward the architectural plans.
Daniel Mercer’s seal appeared on renovations completed nine years earlier.
He had designed the fiber route carrying the live feed.
He had created ventilation, emergency power, and concealed access beneath the old care facility.
Perhaps he discovered Lydia and secretly improved the room to protect her.
Perhaps he participated in keeping her confined.
The same evidence supported two very different stories.
Rebecca read the project notes.
One line appeared in Daniel’s handwriting.
Client refuses public relocation. Preserve independent exit route through sea wall.
That sounded like protection.
Another line had been added in another hand.
Exit sealed by family order.
Daniel may have built an escape route that Lenora later closed.
The police search team reached the coastal property.
Body camera footage appeared on Detective Grant’s tablet.
The building stood behind overgrown hedges, its windows covered from inside.
Officers entered.
The room from the monitor was empty.
The chair remained warm.
A medical line hung from the wall.
A plate of fresh food sat beside the bed.
Someone had moved Lydia minutes earlier.
On the far wall, words had been written in charcoal.
THE SECOND BRIDE IS ALREADY INSIDE THE TRUST.
Detective Grant read the message aloud.
Evelyn looked toward the forged guardianship documents.
She was the second bride.
Or someone else had entered the plan before her.
A drawer inside the room contained a current ultrasound image.
The name had been removed.
The date was six months earlier.

The patient was not Evelyn.
Continue to the next part: Lydia’s empty room contains evidence that another pregnant woman had been targeted before Evelyn’s wedding.
