Chapter 7 - The Child in the Second Walker
The child on the screen appeared four or five years old.
Her dark hair had been cut unevenly. A medical identification band circled one wrist, but the camera resolution made the name impossible to read.
She used the same blue walker designed for Sofia.
The serial number was visible beneath the frame.
The walker belonged to the Moretti Children’s Mobility Center.
According to clinic records, it had been destroyed after a safety recall.
Emma looked toward the child whenever Mallory moved closer.
She was trying to protect her.
Elena recognized the wallpaper behind them.
“It is the original therapy house.”
The Moretti foundation once owned a residential facility near Lake George. It closed after Isabella’s death because Victoria claimed maintenance costs were too high.
The property was never sold.
It was transferred into a subsidiary controlled by Helix Adaptive Systems.
Federal agents prepared a search warrant.
Victoria sent another message before they could move.
If police enter, the patients disappear.
She knew investigators were watching.
Someone inside law enforcement or the family company was warning her.
I limited the property location to six people.
Grace.
The federal lead investigator.
My security chief.
Elena.
Dr. Carter.
And myself.
Within eight minutes, Mallory began preparing Emma for transport.
The leak came from someone already inside our circle.
My security chief, Thomas Vale, had served my family for fifteen years. He controlled every guard and vehicle at the mansion.
His access record showed he entered the medical tunnel three times during the previous month.
Thomas claimed he was investigating strange alarms.
He had filed no reports.
I ordered him detained.
He reached for his weapon.
Two federal agents restrained him.
His phone contained messages from Victoria.
Keep Adrian focused on the maid.
If necessary, allow the nursery footage to be found without the face.
The necklace accusation had two purposes.
Remove Elena before she could help Sofia further.
And distract me from the hidden clinic during the merger preparations.
Thomas had deleted part of the camera recording, but Lily’s statement prevented the frame from succeeding completely.
The recovered message history also revealed Victoria’s next plan.
If the court removed her trust authority, she intended to declare Sofia’s progress fraudulent and accuse Elena of physically forcing the child to walk for money.
A medical expert had already prepared the report.
The expert was Dr. Amelia Carter.
I looked toward the independent physician standing beside Sofia.
She did not deny knowing Victoria.
“Explain.”
Carter had worked at the foundation eight years earlier. She questioned Mallory’s trial and resigned after patient records disappeared.
Victoria contacted her two weeks before my return and asked her to conduct an independent examination.
“She offered me a place on the merger board if I confirmed permanent disability.”
“Why did you accept the examination?”
“To see Sofia myself.”
“Why did you not tell me?”
“Because I did not know whether you would remove me before I collected evidence.”
Everyone claimed secrecy was necessary.
Every secret placed my daughters in more danger.
“Did you write the report accusing Elena?”
“No.”
Carter showed us a draft carrying her forged signature.
Thomas had created it using old foundation records.
Victoria planned to destroy both women at once.
Elena by accusing her of abuse.
Carter by attaching her name to false conclusions.
I forced myself to ask the question that mattered.
“Can we trust you now?”
“No,” Carter said. “You should verify everything I provide.”
It was the correct answer.
Federal agents approached the Lake George property through an underground utility corridor to avoid the main security cameras.
I remained at the command site with the twins.
Elena insisted on joining the identification team because Emma might respond only to her voice.
The agents entered the therapy house shortly after sunset.
The live camera feed went dark.
For six minutes, no one spoke.
Then Elena’s voice came through the radio.
“Emma is alive.”
I closed my eyes.
The restrained child was also alive.
Her name was Ava Benson. Official clinic records declared that she died from complications three years earlier.
Her parents had received an urn and a settlement.
The body was never independently identified.
The facility contained seven patient rooms.
Six were empty.
Recent bedding and medical supplies showed other children had been moved hours earlier.
Victoria and Mallory had escaped through a lake tunnel.
Emma was weak but conscious.
Before paramedics transported her, she gave Elena a data card hidden beneath the lining of Ava’s walker.
The card contained the original patient trial list.
Sofia’s name was absent.
Lily’s name was present.
The experimental procedure had been approved for Lily, not Sofia.
