Chapter 6 - The Medicine with Lily’s Name

Lily said Victoria gave her the pink medicine before important family events.
“She said it stopped bad dreams.”
“How often?” I asked.
“When Grandma says I talk too much.”
The answer made Elena turn away.
My mother had been sedating both girls.
Sofia received the drug before medical evaluations to suppress movement.
Lily received it before meetings, interviews, and visits from attorneys.
The child who noticed everything had been chemically quieted whenever she might speak.
Dr. Carter examined Lily immediately.
Her physical health appeared stable, but blood tests showed repeated exposure to sedatives over several months.
The dosage was small.
It was still medically unnecessary.
Victoria’s attorney advised her not to answer questions.
I revoked every power she held over the twins’ medical care.
Grace filed an emergency court petition suspending her trust authority.
The hearing was scheduled for the following morning.
If the court removed her, Victoria would lose voting control before the Moretti merger.
That made the next twelve hours dangerous.
I moved both girls into a secure wing of the mansion with independent nurses.
Elena remained nearby under supervision.
I had not forgotten that she entered under a false name and altered medication.
I also had not forgotten that she was the only adult who treated Sofia as capable.
Trust would need evidence, not gratitude.
The nursery footage was copied to several secure locations.
Grace contacted federal medical investigators.
Dr. Mallory’s disappearance became part of a potential child endangerment and research fraud case.
At midnight, the mansion lost power.
Backup generators should have activated immediately.
They did not.
Security reported a manual shutdown from the lower control room.
The nursery doors locked automatically.
Sofia and Lily were inside with Elena.
I reached the corridor as emergency lights turned red.
The electronic lock rejected my fingerprint.
Someone had replaced the administrator permissions.
Victoria’s voice came through the hallway speaker.
“Adrian, you are frightening the children.”
“Open the door.”
“They need rest.”
“You drugged them.”
“I protected them from a dangerous employee and an unstable mother.”
“Isabella was not unstable.”
“She was going to destroy everything your grandfather built.”
“The company is not worth my daughters.”
“You say that because you never had to build it.”
I struck the control panel hard enough to crack the cover.
The door remained locked.
Inside, Elena moved both girls into the bathroom, which had a manual ventilation window.
She wrapped Sofia in a blanket and instructed Lily to remain low.
A sweet chemical odor entered through the nursery vents.
Elena recognized it from the clinic.
Aerosolized sedative.
Victoria intended to make the girls unconscious before someone entered.
Elena used wet towels to block the vent.
Sofia began coughing.
Lily activated the small emergency alarm inside her stuffed rabbit.
Isabella had installed it without telling Victoria.
The alarm transmitted directly to Grace and the federal investigators.
Security officers forced open the nursery door with a hydraulic tool.
I carried Sofia into fresh air while a nurse lifted Lily.
Elena stumbled behind them, dizzy from the gas.
Victoria was not in her bedroom.
The lower control room stood open.
A service vehicle had left through the rear gate during the blackout.
Security footage showed Victoria seated inside.
Dr. Mallory was driving.
They had entered the mansion together through an old medical access tunnel beneath the clinic wing.
The tunnel predated my ownership.
Isabella’s original plans marked it as sealed.
Victoria had kept it active.
The court suspended her trust authority before dawn.
The merger vote was postponed.
Federal agents searched the tunnel.
They found storage cabinets containing medication, research files, and children’s clothing labeled with patient numbers.
One yellow dress matched Sofia’s size.
Several others belonged to children no one in the household recognized.
Elena found a small silver bracelet inside a drawer.
It carried Emma Reed’s name.
Her sister had been inside the tunnel.
A video terminal remained active.
The screen showed a live camera feed from an unknown clinical room.
Emma sat restrained beside Dr. Mallory.
Victoria stood behind her.
My mother looked directly into the camera.
“Return the nursery archive and restore my shares.”
Emma lifted her head.
“Do not give her anything.”
Mallory tightened a strap around her wrist.
Victoria smiled.
“You have until the merger meeting.”
Then the camera moved.

A small child sat in the corner using a walker identical to Sofia’s.
Continue to the next part: Elena sees a missing patient alive beside Emma and realizes the secret clinic continued operating beneath another Moretti property.
