Chapter 4 - THE WOMAN WHO BOARDED ALONE
Diana landed in Miami shortly before seven that evening.
She walked quickly through the terminal without calling the children.
Her first call went to Eric Mercer.
“Did he wake up?”
“No.”
“Where is the jacket?”
“I don’t know.”
“The girl had it.”
“Then why did you leave her?”
Diana stopped near a luggage carousel.
“She was becoming a problem.”
“She is eight.”
“She heard too much.”
Eric became silent.
Diana lowered her voice.
“She doesn’t understand any of it.”
“She understands you left her at an airport.”
“You said the Miami account was ready.”
“It was.”
“What does that mean?”
“The bank froze it.”
Diana’s breathing changed.
“Why?”
“Someone sent the files.”
“Thomas is unconscious.”
“Then somebody found the card.”
Diana looked around the terminal as though the danger had become visible among the strangers.
She purchased a prepaid phone and attempted to reserve a hotel under another name.
The transaction failed.
Her primary accounts were restricted under an emergency fraud order.
Airport police located her before she left the terminal.
She was detained on allegations related to child abandonment and questioned about Thomas’s case.
Diana immediately blamed Eric.
“He injured Thomas.”
“Did you know he planned to confront him?” Detective Rosa Martinez asked.
“I knew they were meeting.”
“Why did you tell Eric to make sure Thomas could not reveal where the card was?”
“I meant frighten him.”
“Why search the house afterward?”
“To find company records he had stolen.”
“Why leave two children at O’Hare?”
“I panicked.”
“Why purchase only one ticket?”
“I planned to send them to family.”
“Which family?”
Diana could not name anyone expecting them.
“Why tell Maddie to wait beside a departed gate?”
“I thought airport staff would help.”
“You did not tell staff they were there.”
“I knew someone would notice.”
The detective placed a photograph of Maddie holding Leo on the interview table.
Travelers had passed them for twenty seven minutes before Grant stopped.
Diana looked away.
“I was afraid.”
“So was Maddie.”
Diana requested an attorney.
Eric Mercer attempted to protect himself by providing messages showing Diana knew about the false safety invoices.
Diana responded with records showing Eric arranged payments to inspectors and ordered workers to remove barriers before client visits.
Their cooperation did not erase either role.
Investigators examined the warehouse.
The upper railing had been partially cut with a powered tool.
Metal filings remained beneath nearby equipment.
Eric’s gloves contained matching residue.
A security camera had been redirected seven minutes before Thomas arrived.
Eric claimed he cut the railing because it was damaged and intended to replace it.
No replacement material was present.
A witness heard him tell Thomas:
“You should have stopped asking questions.”
The evidence supported a deliberate confrontation and dangerous sabotage.
Whether Eric intended Thomas’s death required a jury to evaluate the full record.
Grant did not speak to reporters.
He arranged legal support for Thomas and independent care for the children, but every payment went through approved channels.
He did not want wealth to become another person controlling Maddie’s life.
At the foster home, Maddie slept in a chair beside Leo’s crib.
The foster mother, Mrs. Alvarez, placed a blanket around her.
“You may sleep in the bed.”
“What if he wakes up?”
“I will hear him.”
“What if you don’t?”
“Then you wake me.”
“Diana says babies cry because older children make them nervous.”
Mrs. Alvarez sat beside her.
“Leo cries because he is a baby.”
“Is it my job to stop him?”
“No.”
“Then whose job is it?”
“The adults caring for both of you.”
Maddie looked toward the door.
“Adults leave.”
“Some do.”
Mrs. Alvarez did not promise that nobody would ever fail her again.
She said something more honest.
“I will tell you before I leave this room.”
