Chapter 3 - THE SECRET SEWN INTO THE REFLECTIVE PATCH
Thomas remained unconscious when Grant arrived at the hospital.
Maddie and Leo were placed temporarily with a licensed foster family experienced in keeping siblings together. Grant was approved to visit under supervision because Thomas’s business card and rescue history established a meaningful connection.
He did not try to purchase custody.
He sat beside Maddie while she held Leo and waited for news.
Thomas had suffered a fractured skull, broken ribs, and a crushed leg after falling from an elevated platform.
His employer, Mercer Industrial Redevelopment, claimed he ignored safety barriers.
Thomas had worked in industrial construction for seventeen years.
His record contained no serious safety violation.
Grant remembered the man who entered a collapsing structure because he understood exactly what the steel could bear.
He did not believe Thomas simply walked through an unsecured barrier.
The jacket was examined by Detective Sloan and a digital evidence specialist.
Inside the reflective shoulder patch, they found a sealed micro storage card.
It contained photographs, voice recordings, payroll files, and video copied from Thomas’s work phone.
The files documented missing safety equipment at several Mercer sites.
Workers complained about damaged cables and weakened railings.
Management altered inspection records.
Thomas had discovered that expensive safety materials were being billed to clients but never installed.
The missing funds moved through a subcontractor called Harlo Compliance Solutions.
The company belonged to Diana.
Grant stared at the corporate record.
“She was taking money from his job sites.”
Detective Sloan corrected him.
“The evidence suggests she received payments. We still have to determine why.”
The answer appeared in an audio recording.
Thomas confronted Diana inside their kitchen two nights before his fall.
“I know where the money went,” he said.
Diana answered:
“You do not understand what you found.”
“I understand six workers were injured while your company invoiced equipment that never arrived.”
“You will destroy us.”
“I’m taking this to the state.”
“What happens to me?”
“That depends on what you did.”
Diana’s voice became colder.
“What happens to Maddie and Leo if you go to war with people who own half the city?”
Thomas replied:
“They grow up knowing their father did not stay silent.”
The next file was recorded at the warehouse on the morning of the fall.
Thomas spoke with site supervisor Eric Mercer.
“The upper railing has been cut.”
“You’re imagining things.”
“I photographed it yesterday.”
“You should have stayed home.”
A metallic impact followed.
Thomas shouted.
The recording ended.
Investigators could not see who caused the fall.
The altered railing, prior threats, financial evidence, and supervisor’s words made the accident report unreliable.
Then they found Diana’s messages.
ERIC: HE COPIED EVERYTHING.
DIANA: GET THE PHONE.
ERIC: HE HID THE CARD.
DIANA: THEN MAKE SURE HE CANNOT TELL THEM WHERE.
Diana’s attorney would later argue that “make sure” referred to persuading Thomas to remain silent, not killing him.
Investigators did not assume intent beyond what evidence could establish.
But Diana clearly knew Thomas was in danger before his fall.
After the ambulance left, she searched the house.
Maddie had seen her cutting open jacket pockets.
Thomas had already given Maddie the real jacket and told her never to let Diana take it.
When Diana failed to find the card, she brought the children to O’Hare.
She planned to fly to Miami, access an offshore account, and disappear before Thomas regained consciousness.
Why bring the children at all?
Airport footage supplied the answer.
Diana initially intended to leave them at a supervised family desk with a false note claiming their father had died and a relative would collect them.
When she saw police near the desk, she changed the plan.
She placed them at Gate B17, told Maddie to wait, and boarded alone.
She believed airport employees would eventually find them.
She also believed their presence would delay investigators while she escaped.
Grant sat beside Thomas’s bed after Maddie left with the foster family.
“You saved me when nobody else came back,” he said.
Thomas did not move.
“I turned your promise into an annual donation and convinced myself that was gratitude.”
The monitor continued its steady rhythm.
“I should have checked on you.”
Grant lowered his head.
