Chloe slowly backed away from the podium.
"Dad..."
"Please..."
"You have to believe me."
Richard looked at her with heartbreaking disappointment.
"I believed you."
"For seventeen years."
"I defended you."
"I excused your behavior."
"I thought you were simply immature."
His voice became heavier.
"But today..."
"I learned something."
"I didn't fail because I had a cruel daughter."
"I failed because I raised one."
Tears filled Chloe's eyes.
"I'm your daughter!"
Richard nodded slowly.
"Exactly."
"And because you're my daughter..."
"I should have taught you that power exists to protect people."
"Not destroy them."
Emily quietly lowered her head.
Richard walked toward her.
"I'm sorry."
His voice trembled.
"Not as a sponsor."
"Not as a businessman."
"But as a father whose own child destroyed your life."
Emily looked shocked.
"You..."
"...don't owe me anything."
Richard shook his head.
"No."
"My silence allowed this to continue."
He turned toward the audience.
"If any student here has ever been bullied..."
"And adults failed to listen..."
"I apologize to every one of you."
Many teachers lowered their heads in shame.
Several students quietly began crying.
