Chapter 5 - Noah Had Been Watching

Noah did not want pancakes.
He sat at the breakfast table the next morning staring at them as if they belonged to someone else.
Emma was still at Greenwich Hospital for observation, with Daniel beside her.
Claire had brought Noah home just after sunrise.
“You need to eat something.”
“I’m not hungry.”
“Three bites.”
“One.”
“Two.”
He sighed.
“Fine.”
He cut a piece.
Claire sat across from him.
For several minutes, they listened to forks against plates.
Then Noah said, “Is Dad divorcing her?”
Claire did not pretend to know.
“I think your dad is trying to understand what happened.”
“She’ll lie.”
“He saw the video.”
“She lies even when people see things.”
Claire watched him carefully.
“That sounds like experience.”
Noah looked down.
“Noah.”
He said nothing.
“You are not responsible for protecting everybody in this house.”
His eyes lifted.
“Somebody had to.”
The answer hurt.
“How long have you been recording Vanessa?”
His fork stopped.
Claire had guessed.
His expression confirmed it.
“Noah?”
“A while.”
“How long?”
“Since Christmas.”
Nine months.
Claire sat back.
“Why?”
“She was different when Dad wasn’t home.”
“In what way?”
“She’d go through his office.”
“Did you tell him?”
“I tried.”
“When?”
“After New Year’s.”
“What happened?”
“She was standing there.”
Claire understood.
“What did she say?”
“That I was upset because Dad remarried. Then she cried.”
“And your father?”
“He said we all had to give the new family a chance.”
Claire closed her eyes for a moment.
Not because Daniel was cruel.
Because he had been manipulated using his own desire to keep the family together.
“What did you record?”
“Mostly nothing.”
“Mostly?”
Noah put his fork down.
“Her talking on the phone.”
“To whom?”
“I don’t know.”
“Do police have those videos?”
“They only copied yesterday.”
“Where are the others?”
“In the cloud.”
Claire stared at him.
“Show your father.”
“What if he gets mad?”
“He might be upset that you were secretly recording.”
Noah’s face fell.
“But that is not the same as being angry that you caught something wrong.”
He nodded.
“What did Vanessa say?”
Noah slid from the chair.
“I’ll show you one.”
Claire almost stopped him.
Then she decided Daniel needed to see it, not her alone.
They waited until Daniel returned from the hospital at eleven.
Emma would be discharged that afternoon.
Daniel looked ten years older than he had the previous morning.
“Evelyn is filing papers so we can access the bank box with police present,” he said. “The bank is cooperating, but Rachel’s instructions were unusually restrictive.”
Noah appeared at the kitchen doorway holding a tablet.
“Dad?”
Daniel’s face softened.
“Hey, buddy.”
“I have something.”
He placed the tablet on the island.
“There are other recordings.”
Daniel looked at Claire.
“She told me this morning,” Claire said.
Noah opened a folder.
There were fourteen clips.
Some only thirty seconds.
Some several minutes.
Dates stretching back months.
Daniel touched the screen.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I did.”
The answer cut through the room.
Daniel looked at his son.
Noah did not sound angry.
That made it worse.
“You told me I had to try harder.”
Daniel shut his eyes.
“I did.”
“So I stopped trying.”
Daniel moved around the island.
“Noah, look at me.”
The boy reluctantly did.
“I failed you when you tried to tell me. I’m not going to make you comfort me about that. I just want you to know I understand.”
Noah’s mouth tightened.
Then he nodded.
They opened the first clip.
Vanessa stood inside Daniel’s home office talking on her phone.
“Yes,” she said. “He signed the vendor approvals. He signs whatever I put in front of him.”
Daniel’s face changed.
The clip ended.
Second recording.
Vanessa again.
“You told me Rachel’s audit was dead.”
A pause.
“No, there can’t be another copy.”
Daniel leaned closer.
Third clip.
Vanessa’s voice was quieter.
“The trust is the problem. The company money is already clean.”
Daniel stopped the video.
“The company money?”
Claire asked, “Do you know what she means?”
“No.”
Noah clicked another clip.
Vanessa stood near the fireplace.
“I’m not waiting until those children turn twenty-five. Once Daniel signs the restructuring, the voting rights move.”
Daniel’s face went white.
“That’s impossible.”
“What?” Claire asked.
“The children’s trust owns thirty-one percent of Mercer Surgical.”
Noah looked confused.
Daniel explained.
“Rachel and I placed shares in trust for you and Emma. They’re yours eventually. Nobody is supposed to touch them.”
Noah stared at the tablet.
“Vanessa wanted them?”
Daniel whispered, “It sounds like she wanted control.”
The final clip had been recorded only six days earlier.
Vanessa was arguing with someone.
“You find that key before one of those kids does.”
A man’s voice answered faintly through the speaker.
“What if Rachel moved the originals?”
Vanessa said, “Then we have a bigger problem.”
Daniel froze the video.
Noah looked at him.
“Dad?”
Daniel’s eyes remained on the screen.
He recognized the man’s voice.
May you like
It belonged to someone who still worked inside his company.
Continue to the next chapter: Daniel identifies the man speaking with Vanessa as Mercer Surgical’s chief financial officer—and realizes the secret inside Box 317 may threaten far more than his marriage.
