Chapter 2 - The Silver Key

Daniel replayed the final five seconds.

Once.

Twice.

Then a third time.

“You should’ve never opened that drawer.”

Vanessa’s recorded voice sounded even colder the third time.

Daniel lowered Noah’s phone.

“What drawer?”

Vanessa folded her arms.

“This is ridiculous.”

“No,” Daniel said. “It stopped being ridiculous when I watched you force my daughter into a refrigerator.”

“I was trying to scare her.”

Claire stared at her.

“You could have killed her.”

Vanessa’s eyes snapped toward Claire.

“Stay out of this.”

Claire tightened her arms around Emma.

“I’m calling 911.”

Daniel nodded immediately.

Vanessa spun toward him.

“You cannot be serious.”

“My daughter is barely able to stand.”

“She was inside for a minute.”

Noah spoke quietly.

“It was longer.”

Everyone looked at him.

He swallowed.

“I started recording after Vanessa brought Emma downstairs.”

“How much longer?” Daniel asked.

“I don’t know. Maybe seven minutes. Maybe eight.”

Vanessa’s jaw clenched.

“You don’t know because you were spying.”

Noah stared at her.

“You were hurting her.”

Claire already had her phone in her hand.

She gave the dispatcher the address and described Emma’s condition.

As she spoke, Daniel crouched in front of his daughter.

“Emma.”

Emma refused to look at him.

His voice softened.

“Sweetheart, I need you to tell me what happened.”

Claire felt the child stiffen.

“You’re not in trouble,” Daniel said.

Emma whispered, “She said I was.”

“For what?”

The little girl glanced at Vanessa.

Vanessa immediately said, “Daniel, you should not interrogate a traumatized six-year-old.”

Claire’s gaze hardened.

“He asked his daughter a question.”

Daniel did not look away from Emma.

“What did you find?”

Emma’s fingers tightened in Claire’s cardigan.

“I wanted Mommy’s blue pencil.”

Daniel’s face changed.

Rachel Mercer had been dead for nearly three years, but the children still called certain things Mommy’s things.

Her piano.

Her Christmas box.

Her garden.

Her pencils.

“What blue pencil?” Daniel asked.

“The one with the stars.”

“I remember,” Noah said.

Emma nodded.

“It used to be in Mommy’s desk.”

Vanessa interrupted.

“That desk is mine now.”

Daniel slowly stood.

“Where is it?”

Vanessa said nothing.

“Where is the desk?”

“My study.”

Daniel looked toward the east hallway.

Claire could almost see the pieces moving inside his mind.

Rachel’s old study.

Vanessa had claimed it after marrying Daniel.

“What was in the drawer?” he asked Emma.

The girl’s voice dropped.

“A picture.”

“What picture?”

“Mommy.”

Daniel swallowed.

Emma continued.

“And a key.”

Vanessa stepped forward.

“That’s enough.”

Daniel turned so quickly she stopped.

“Do not tell my daughter when she has said enough.”

For the first time, Vanessa looked uncertain.

Daniel faced Emma again.

“What kind of key?”

“A silver one.”

“Anything else?”

Emma hesitated.

“There was a yellow tag.”

Noah asked, “What did it say?”

Emma squeezed her eyes shut.

Claire stroked her hair.

“It’s okay.”

“Three-one-seven.”

Daniel went still.

Vanessa’s lips parted.

Claire noticed.

So did Noah.

Emma whispered, “And there was an envelope with Mommy’s name.”

Daniel stared at his wife.

“You had an envelope belonging to Rachel?”

Vanessa recovered quickly.

“I kept dozens of Rachel’s things after you refused to sort that room.”

“In a locked drawer?”

“It was private.”

“Why?”

“Because I live here.”

Sirens sounded faintly outside.

Vanessa glanced toward the windows.

Daniel noticed.

“What was in the envelope?”

“I don’t remember.”

“You just locked my daughter in a refrigerator because she opened that drawer.”

“I panicked.”

“You panicked?”

“Yes.”

Daniel laughed, but there was no humor in it.

“You almost froze a six-year-old because she found an old envelope, and your explanation is that you panicked?”

Vanessa’s eyes filled with sudden tears.

The transformation was startling.

“Daniel, listen to me. You came home in the middle of chaos. Claire hates me. Noah has hated me since our wedding. Emma repeats whatever they tell her. You are letting them turn one stupid mistake into something monstrous.”

Claire felt Noah’s anger from across the room.

Daniel looked at the phone again.

The video did not show a stupid mistake.

It showed intention.

The doorbell rang.

A second later the housekeeper admitted paramedics and two Greenwich police officers.

The kitchen changed instantly.

Questions.

Medical bags.

A thermal blanket around Emma.

A pulse oximeter clipped to her finger.

One paramedic looked at Claire.

“How long was she exposed?”

“Possibly eight minutes.”

“In a refrigerator?”

“Yes.”

He glanced toward the open appliance, then at Emma.

“We’re taking her in.”

Daniel stood.

“I’m coming.”

Vanessa moved toward him.

“I’ll come with you.”

“No.”

The single word stopped her.

One of the officers approached Daniel.

“Mr. Mercer, we need to preserve that phone.”

Noah immediately looked alarmed.

“It’s mine.”

“You’ll get it back. We need the original video.”

Daniel handed it to the officer.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

“You’re staying here.”

“With police?”

“Yes.”

Her voice dropped.

“You’re choosing them over your wife.”

Daniel looked at Emma being lifted onto the stretcher.

“No.”

He turned back.

“I’m choosing the child you put in a refrigerator.”

As the paramedics rolled Emma toward the front door, Vanessa called after him.

“Daniel.”

He stopped.

For one moment, Claire thought Vanessa would apologize.

Instead she said, “Do not open that drawer without me.”

Daniel slowly looked over his shoulder.

And Claire knew at once that Vanessa had just made the worst mistake she could have made.
