Chap 2

For several seconds...

No one moved.

The silence inside the kitchen felt heavier than the sound of gunfire Alexander had endured overseas.

His eyes remained fixed on his mother.

Margaret lay curled on the cold tile floor, her face swollen with bruises.

Blood trickled from the corner of her mouth.

One frail hand still trembled beside the overturned bucket.

Alexander had seen wounded soldiers on battlefields.

He had carried injured friends through explosions.

But nothing prepared him for seeing his own mother lying helpless in his home.

His home.

The house he had spent years paying for with deployment bonuses and military savings.

The house he had bought so his mother would never struggle again.

His breathing became slower.

Dangerously slow.

"Mom..."

His voice cracked.

Margaret looked up.

The moment she saw her son standing in uniform, tears streamed down her face.

"Alexander..."

"I knew..."

"I knew you'd come home."

She tried to smile.

Instead she cried.

Alexander rushed across the kitchen, dropping to his knees beside her.

He carefully lifted her into his arms.

The moment his fingers touched her shoulder, she winced in pain.

His heart stopped.

"Did she do this to you?"

Margaret hesitated.

She didn't want to destroy her son's marriage.

Even now...

She wanted to protect him.

"It doesn't matter..."

She whispered.

"You're home."

Alexander gently brushed the gray hair away from her face.

His hands began shaking.

Not from fear.

From rage.

He noticed the bruises around her wrists.

The cuts on her hands.

The dried blood on her sweater.

Then he saw the legal documents scattered across the floor.

One page caught his attention.

PROPERTY TRANSFER AGREEMENT

His signature appeared at the bottom.

Alexander picked it up.

His expression darkened instantly.

"This..."

He stared at Olivia.

"...isn't my signature."

Olivia finally found her voice.

"Alexander..."

"I can explain."

He slowly stood.

Still holding the forged document.

"You'd better."

She forced a nervous laugh.

"Your mother slipped."

"She fell."

"I was helping her clean."

Alexander looked down at the filthy brown water covering the floor.

Then at the bucket.

"Helping?"

He pointed toward it.

"By making her drink that?"

Olivia swallowed hard.

"No..."

"You misunderstood."

Before she could continue...

Margaret quietly spoke.

"Don't lie anymore."

The room fell silent.

Margaret wiped tears from her face.

"She said you gave her permission."

"She said you signed everything over before you left."

Alexander looked back at Olivia.

"I never signed anything."

Margaret continued.

"She hit me because I refused."

Alexander slowly unfolded every document lying on the floor.

One after another.

Every signature was fake.

Every page transferred another piece of property.

His mother's home.

His father's farmland.

His military insurance.

Even his retirement savings.

All forged.

Alexander closed his eyes for one long second.

When he opened them again...

The kindness Olivia had once known was gone.

Years of military discipline kept him from exploding.

But only barely.

"You forged federal documents."

"You assaulted my elderly mother."

"You committed fraud while I was deployed."

Olivia backed away.

"Alexander..."

"I was desperate."

"We needed money."

He took one slow step toward her.

"We?"

"You bought designer handbags."

"Luxury vacations."

"A new sports car."

"My mother was eating canned soup while you spent my deployment pay."

Olivia's lips trembled.

"I love you."

Alexander stared at her in disbelief.

"No."

"You loved what I could give you."

At that moment...

His phone vibrated.

He answered immediately.

"Captain Carter?"

"Yes, sir."

"This is Military Legal Affairs."

"We've completed the audit you requested before your flight."

Alexander remained silent.

The officer continued.

"We discovered multiple unauthorized transactions involving your deployment accounts."

"There appears to be identity fraud."

"We've already contacted federal investigators."

Olivia's face instantly lost all color.

Alexander looked directly into her eyes.

"They already know."

She whispered,

"No..."

He ended the call.

Then calmly picked up his own phone once more.

This time...

He dialed 911.

Olivia suddenly rushed forward.

"No!"

"Alexander, please!"

"I'll fix everything!"

"I'll give it all back!"

Alexander never lowered the phone.

His voice was cold.

"My mother begged you for mercy."

"You gave her a bucket of dirty water."

"You don't get to beg me for mercy now."

As the dispatcher answered...

The distant sound of police sirens began echoing somewhere outside.

Olivia realized, for the first time...

May you like

This wasn't a family argument anymore.

It was the beginning of the end.
