Chap 1

Rain poured relentlessly against the windows of the modern white house on Maple Ridge Drive.

Inside, the kitchen looked nothing like the warm family home it had once been.

Brown, foul-smelling water had been spilled across the white tile floor.

Legal documents lay scattered everywhere, some soaked, others crumpled beneath expensive high heels.

An overturned bucket rested beside the kitchen island.

In the middle of the mess...

Margaret Carter struggled to breathe.

The seventy-two-year-old widow lay on the cold floor, her gray sweater stained with dirt.

A fresh bruise darkened one side of her face.

Her lower lip was split.

One trembling hand pressed against her ribs while the other reached helplessly toward the photographs hanging on the wall.

One picture showed her only son smiling proudly in his Army uniform.

Alexander Carter.

The boy she had raised alone after his father died in service.

The boy who had promised before deploying overseas,

"Mom... when I come home, life is going to get easier for both of us."

She had believed him.

She never imagined what would happen while he was gone.

Standing over her was Olivia Carter.

Perfectly dressed in cream-colored silk trousers and an elegant blouse.

Her makeup was flawless.

Her expression was not.

She looked down at the elderly woman with complete contempt.

"You've always been stubborn."

She kicked one of the legal folders toward Margaret.

"Sign them."

Margaret shook her head weakly.

"I won't."

"My son would never ask me to give away his father's land."

Olivia laughed.

"Your son?"

"He's halfway across the world."

"He'll never know."

She bent down, grabbing a handful of Margaret's gray hair.

The older woman cried out in pain.

"I said..."

"Sign."

Margaret's voice trembled.

"Alexander loves me."

"He would never let this happen."

Olivia's smile widened.

"Oh, really?"

She reached into her handbag and pulled out several official-looking papers.

Across the top, in bold letters, were property transfer agreements.

Olivia threw them onto the floor.

"Read them."

"Your precious son signed everything before he deployed."

Margaret tried to focus on the pages through her tears.

Something wasn't right.

The signature looked similar.

But not identical.

"You forged this..."

She whispered.

Olivia's face hardened.

"I don't need your opinion."

"I need your signature."

She grabbed the bucket from the floor.

The filthy brown water sloshed over the rim.

She shoved it toward Margaret.

"When you're finished signing..."

"You can drink."

Margaret stared at the murky liquid in horror.

"No..."

Olivia crouched until they were face to face.

"Drink it."

"You should be grateful I'm giving you anything at all."

The elderly woman's entire body shook.

She had survived cancer.

She had survived losing her husband.

She had survived years of working double shifts to put Alexander through school.

But she had never experienced humiliation like this.

She quietly closed her eyes.

"Please come home, son..."

"Please..."

At that exact moment...

A loud engine stopped outside the house.

Olivia didn't notice.

Neither did Margaret.

The front gate opened.

Heavy boots stepped onto the porch.

A key turned slowly inside the front door.

The handle moved.

Olivia lifted the bucket again.

"I said..."

"Drink it."

BANG!

The front door slammed against the wall.

A deep voice echoed through the house.

"Mom?"

Silence.

Margaret's eyes flew open.

She knew that voice.

No...

It couldn't be.

Footsteps thundered down the hallway.

Fast.

Heavy.

Military boots striking hardwood floors.

Olivia slowly turned toward the kitchen entrance.

Her confident smile disappeared instantly.

Standing in the doorway...

Still wearing a dusty U.S. Army combat uniform...

A duffel bag hanging from one shoulder...

Was Alexander.

He looked from the bucket...

To the legal documents...

To the blood on his mother's face.

Time seemed to stop.

His jaw tightened.

The veins in his neck became visible.

When he finally spoke...

His voice was terrifyingly calm.

"What..."

He dropped the duffel bag.

"...are you doing..."

May you like

His eyes locked onto Olivia.

"...to my mother?"
