Chapter 3 - The Message from Noah’s Father

Rebecca entered the old service corridor beneath the greenhouse.

Evelyn followed before police could stop her.

The tunnel had once allowed servants to move between the mansion, gardens, and carriage house without crossing formal rooms. Most of the passages had been sealed during renovation, but Evelyn knew one still opened near the laundry cellar.

Smoke moved through the ceiling vents.

“Rebecca!”

The nurse did not stop.

Evelyn caught her near a locked iron gate.

“Give me the drive.”

Rebecca turned.

Her face was wet with tears.

“You don’t understand.”

“Then explain.”

“If Charles gets this, Noah dies.”

“Charles just shot Victoria to protect me.”

“That does not make him innocent.”

Rebecca held up the drive.

“Daniel gave this to me three days before the plane crash.”

Evelyn stared at her.

“Noah’s father?”

“He said someone inside the family was planning to remove him from the company. He told me to protect Noah if anything happened.”

“Why hide the drive in Noah’s bedroom?”

“I didn’t. Daniel did.”

“Victoria found it?”

“She learned it existed. She believed it was hidden inside the wall behind Noah’s bed.”

“That is why she set the fire.”

Rebecca nodded.

“Marcus helped her search the room. When they failed, they decided to burn everything and blame an electrical fault.”

“And Noah?”

“Victoria said his death would make the fire appear accidental.”

Evelyn’s anger returned.

“You knew he was in danger.”

“I did not know they planned tonight.”

“You stole the drive instead of helping him.”

“I found it after you carried him out. It had fallen from Victoria’s clutch.”

“Then give it to the police.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because Daniel’s recording names officers, lawyers, and Whitmore executives.”

Evelyn heard footsteps inside the tunnel.

Rebecca lowered her voice.

“Someone has protected Victoria for years.”

A beam of light appeared around the corner.

Rebecca slipped the drive into Evelyn’s hand.

“Hide it.”

Marcus stepped through the smoke.

His hands were no longer restrained.

Blood ran from a cut near his temple.

He held a firefighter’s axe.

“Rebecca,” he said. “Move away from her.”

“How did you escape?”

“The police car was struck by an estate vehicle.”

Evelyn backed toward the iron gate.

Marcus looked at the pocket where she had hidden the drive.

“Victoria should have fired you years ago.”

“Where is Noah?”

“Safe for the moment.”

“For the moment?”

“He is the only person who can legally open Daniel’s encrypted files.”

Rebecca moved between Marcus and Evelyn.

“You will not touch him.”

Marcus swung the axe.

Rebecca raised her arm.

The blade struck the iron gate instead, sending sparks across the tunnel.

Evelyn kicked Marcus’s knee.

He stumbled.

Rebecca grabbed the axe handle.

For several seconds, they fought in the smoke.

Then part of the tunnel ceiling collapsed.

Marcus disappeared beneath falling stone.

Evelyn pulled Rebecca through the gate just before the passage filled with debris.

They escaped through the carriage house.

Police surrounded them immediately.

Rebecca surrendered.

Evelyn handed the drive directly to Detective Laura Bennett, the lead investigator assigned by Greenwich police.

Bennett placed it inside an evidence bag.

“Does anyone else know you recovered it?”

“Marcus.”

“Where is he?”

“Buried in the tunnel.”

Firefighters searched the collapsed passage.

They found blood and the axe.

Marcus was gone.

At the medical staging area, Noah sat inside an ambulance beneath several heated blankets.

Charles stood outside.

He looked suddenly older.

When he saw Rebecca in handcuffs, he became furious.

“She was protecting him,” Evelyn said.

“She stole evidence.”

“Evidence Daniel trusted her to keep away from you.”

Charles stared at her.

“Why would my son distrust me?”

Rebecca answered.

“Because he believed you arranged the plane crash.”

Charles’s face emptied.

Noah looked through the ambulance doors.

“My dad’s plane didn’t crash by accident?”

No one answered.

Detective Bennett took the drive to a mobile command unit.

It required voice recognition and a biometric scan.

The registered user was Noah Whitmore.

Charles objected to involving a child.

Noah insisted.

“My dad left it for me.”

Inside the command vehicle, he placed his thumb against the scanner.

A recorded image of Daniel Whitmore appeared.

Noah stopped breathing for a moment.

His father looked directly into the camera.

“Noah, if you are watching this, I failed to come home.”

Noah began crying silently.

Daniel continued.

“You may have been told the crash was an accident. It was not.”

Charles gripped the edge of the table.

Daniel displayed corporate records proving Whitmore Industries had secretly financed illegal weapons technology through shell companies.

He had discovered the transfers and planned to report them.

Before he could, his aircraft’s maintenance system was sabotaged.

“Victoria knows part of the truth,” Daniel said. “Marcus knows more. But the person who approved my death is someone Noah trusts.”

The recording paused.

A photograph appeared.

Evelyn expected to see Charles.

May you like

Instead, she saw herself.

Continue to the next part: Daniel’s recording accuses Evelyn of meeting the saboteur before the plane crash, and Noah begins questioning the one person who just saved his life.
