Chapter 9 - THE HOUSE THAT BELIEVED THE WRONG MAN

The man in Carmine’s study looked almost perfect.

Same black hair.

Same beard.

Same dark shirt.

Same tattoos rising above the collar.

Then he smiled.

Carmine never smiled when he was angry.

The difference was enough for me.

“Adrian Bell,” Lucia whispered.

The impersonator raised Carmine’s whiskey decanter toward the camera.

“Ivy Hale now controls Bellgrave Community Holdings,” he said in Carmine’s voice. “That was always the point.”

Carmine moved closer to the monitor.

“You poisoned the glass.”

“I prepared the evidence.”

“Where is Nicholas?”

Adrian tilted his head.

“Closer than family usually looks.”

The sentence made Lucia uneasy.

She had supported Nicholas’s claim, but she did not understand everything Adrian had built.

Adrian revealed that Helen Hale trained him.

My mother worked for years as a costume technician and voice coach before marrying Thomas. After the warehouse fire, she helped create the witness protection system around the restitution trust.

She taught staff how disguises, copied voices, and staged records could defeat powerful testimony.

The techniques were designed to protect witnesses from the DeLucas.

Someone later reversed them.

“Where is my mother?” I asked.

Adrian’s expression changed.

“She was alive when she entered Bellgrave.”

“That is not an answer.”

“It is the only one I was given.”

He held up Helen’s notebook.

My mother had documented every disguise, safe address, and emergency identity connected to the trust.

Adrian claimed she contacted him after discovering Nicholas existed.

She believed Carmine would never release control voluntarily and that Lucia would never accept accountability.

Helen designed a test.

Place Ivy inside the estate.

Allow the old conspirators to reveal themselves.

Activate the witness clause.

Transfer Bellgrave’s lawful systems beyond DeLuca control.

The attack was not part of Helen’s plan.

Marco’s violence transformed an investigation into abuse.

Vincent’s poison transformed pressure into attempted destruction.

Lucia’s succession plan transformed secrecy into betrayal.

Yet Helen had placed me near all of it without warning.

I looked at Carmine.

“You were not the only person who used me as bait.”

“No.”

“Did you know she was involved?”

“No.”

Adrian opened the study safe.

Inside were sealed trust records, copied biometric devices, and a current passport under Helen Hale’s name.

The photograph showed my mother with silver hair cut short.

The issue date was six months earlier.

“She is alive,” I whispered.

“Perhaps.”

“What does that mean?”

Adrian placed the passport inside his jacket.

“The woman using her name may not be Helen.”

Every identity inside Bellgrave had become uncertain.

Carmine’s face.

My mother’s passport.

Marco’s signatures.

Vincent’s keys.

Lucia’s ring.

The only truth I trusted completely was the pain in my own body.

Ada touched my shoulder only after asking.

“You decide what happens next.”

The sentence frightened me.

The trust gave me authority to preserve records and suspend systems. It did not make me a judge.

I ordered all employees paid, all doors opened for anyone wishing to leave, and every guard disarmed through independent security.

Nobody would be trapped inside the estate because of a family fight.

I authorized emergency medical access.

I preserved the whiskey, recorder, ledger, cuff button, and surveillance equipment.

Then I released the first restitution files to Evelyn Shaw, the outside attorney named in the trust.

Carmine did not stop me.

Lucia called it betrayal.

Vincent called it theft.

Marco called it overdue.

The staff began giving statements.

A housekeeper described Lucia ordering cameras disabled during private meetings.

The chef described Vincent replacing Carmine’s whiskey bottle.

A guard admitted Marco told him never to investigate injuries involving senior men.

Another maid said she had left Bellgrave two years earlier after being threatened by Adrian while he wore Carmine’s face.

Carmine heard that statement twice.

“I never knew,” he said.

The maid answered through the recording.

“That was the protection they depended on.”

At dawn, outside investigators entered under the authority of the trust and estate counsel.

No police sirens filled the driveway.

No one was dragged through the halls.

The evidence began moving into sealed containers.

Vincent attempted to leave with the leather folder.

Gabriel stopped him at the gate and requested that he surrender estate property.

Vincent refused.

The folder opened during the argument.

Inside were photographs of Thomas Hale taken during the previous year.

My father stood beside a lighthouse in Nova Scotia.

In one photograph, Carmine’s hidden brother Nicholas stood beside him.

They were not enemies.

They appeared to be working together.

The most recent image showed Thomas entering Bellgrave through the north service gate three nights earlier.

My father may have been inside the estate when Marco attacked me.

Continue to the next part: Ivy searches Bellgrave for the father who allowed her to believe he was dead, while Carmine learns Thomas and Nicholas created a fourth signet ring.
